I’m looking at getting a bike to trails with my son and don’t want to spend more than a 1k.

Anyone know of a decent brand? Anyone have a polygon or a fezzari bike?

Prob best off looking at Trek, Giant, or Specialized, but I know stock is pretty limited.

I would avoid anything from Walmart type places.

    100% agree with @slowpokepete

What type of trails are you riding? Are you needing mountain bike or just something for dirt trails?

I’ve had good success with Bikes Direct. Lesser known brands, but bike store quality bikes for lower price.

I got out of mtb a while back but recently started looking at them again.

In that price range, I'd be looking at CUBE hardtail. I prefer hard tail for weight and it's not needed unless you are downhilling.

As a few other have said, if you are serious about it, hit up a local shop. Buy from the guys who ride them, not 16y old Johnny at Kmart making minimum wage and putting your bike brakes together.

Used is also a good option. Covid makes supply and demand not buyer friendly right now though $$$.

Yea I’m in west Texas so we don’t have great trails except for the bike park that is mostly trails and a few decent hills.

Bike shops around here are pricey and haven’t had decent stock of any sub 1k bikes. Polygon is an international bike dealer out of Indonesia with great reviews and fezzarri Is a direct to consumer seller but units have a 44 week lead time.

I’ll look into CUBE, Thanks for the reference guys.

A little above your price range at $1300, but look at the Trek Roscoe 6. Solid quality and components for the price.

Regardless, if you find something jump on it. Bikes are rolling off the shelves.

At that price point, I would really try to find a good used hardtail locally. Someone my have a $3k bike they don't use or a family member had and are looking to get rid of it. Just be sure to have it checked out.

    Don't dismiss GT...

Even though they are sold at big box sports stores (at least in Canada), they come spec'd nicely and are probably the best bang for the buck up here. Then bring it to a shop to have it tuned up properly for $50.

The GT Avalanche Comp, will be hard to beat spec wise for $1000

    That's the one.

When I was a kid, all they made was higher end BMX (I was into freestyle). They have been around a long time and seem to have gotten pushed into chain stores to survive.

I can relate. The triple triangle design on the GT was considered progressive in the late 1990's!

A hard tail is also gonna give you the best level of quality for the money.

Check out Pinkbike and maybe even MTBR if you are looking at used bikes.

This can be a little tricky, though, as you will likely be buying without seeing the bike and kind of need to know what you are looking at / for.

So I was thinking of starting a mountain bike thread, but looking through 10 pages in, I found this thread, so I'm reviving it, some of you you that I have a partial ACL tear and meniscus damage, but I've been going to the gym doing either the elliptical machine or stationary bike or stair machine or treadmill very lightly no more than 15-20 min each machine going light, but I'm thinking of a mountain bike, nothing too serious like jumps or anything like that, just light trails or off the side of highways or roads, not looking to break the bank either when it comes to looking for a bike, wanting to keep the budget under $400???? or $300, just recently I was strolling the aisles at Walmart and saw they sell Mongoose and Schwinn, saw two different Schwinn models, AL Comp and Axum both at my budget, but then doing some research on the net, some guys did upgrades, which made the bikes even a lot like the high end bikes, BUT the Axum is 29" and the AL Comp is 27.5 , they don't give the frame size info, and I couldn't try to sit in both cause the bikes were chained up, so the net says a 29" could be too tall, and I'm 5'11" , so the 27.5 would be a better choice, like to get some info from the bike riders on here

You have a Sun and Ski store out there? Not for my MTB, but when I was looking for a road bike to ride the MS150, I found a last year model carbon frame bike in clearance 50% off ($999 vs $1999). They have some decent mid-grade stuff that's better than Academy/Wal Mart, but not as expensive as a specialty bike shop.

I have a specialized crave comp 29er it was around 1600 new when I got it it's a hard tail if I had to do it again I would look for full suspension and I would try to find one used honestly even one that some one may have done some upgrades to you can usually find a good deal on them if you look around you never know if someone is ready to unload there's

On the Axum, I assume you should easily be able to get comfortable on it. I have a full sus 29" MTB (Diamondback) that has a "medium" frame size. I'm 5'5" and would fit a small frame size better, but the med. is fine. At 5'11" even if the Axum is a large frame you should be comfortable once you get it set up.
