My son was backing my 2008 tundra up to have me put the boat on The trailor and he was in 4high. When the boat was on he then decided to put it in 4low and pull it out. He then at that point had no transmission control. it would not go in any gear. We had to get pulled out. and then when i got on a flat surface i was able to get it in gear and had no Problems. any suggestions on our mistake or comments on what we might have done wrong? I have tuff skin let it rip. Thank you

Did he have it in neutral or park when he put it in four Low? I still don't know why you would have no transmission control. Check the fluid level in your transfer case and maybe in front diff.

yes, don't try switching the transfer case at a critical moment :)

its odd though.. the transfer case should have still been engaged in 4hi even if it wouldn't go into 4lo.

EDIT: ohh... also, if there is load on the driveline, i don't think it will go into 4lo.

if you were in park, there was probably load on the drive line. switching from 4hi to 4lo, you should be in neutral.

in any case, next time, stay in gear when on the ramp :)

no thoughts really other than what @Netmonkey already said. 4HI should be sufficient at the boat ramp, but whatever you choose to go with, I'd do it before backing down the ramp.

Were either the 4HI or 4LO lights flashing on the dash?

Mine won't allow me to shift into 4L while in Park...only Neutral. Could you do that in Park with a 2nd gen?

because you were in park which can put load on the drive line especially sitting on a boat ramp. if he put in park and took his foot off the brake, the truck would roll back against the transmission. you need to be in neutral to engage 4lo.

so, being at an angle, in park, and trying to switch the transfer case put the truck in a bad state. once you were off the boat ramp, everything returned to normal.

If you try to shift it into 4L it takes a second to get there. I think with 4H and going back to 2WD, the rolling a few feet or letting off the throttle does the trick to switch it, but 4L is a different beast altogether. It may do a limbo thing...I'm sure someone on here will know.

I don't have an answer as to why it happened, but i have never had to put my vehicle in 4 wheel drive while pulling my boats out of the water. If you have it in 2 wheel drive or 4 hi, just leave it.

Must be quite a ramp and quite a boat! Pulled a 23' cc for many years and never once had to put the truck in 4wd.

    This reminds me...

I'll have to do some research (again), but as I recall in my Gen 1, the 4WD "on the fly" was possible because the front drive shaft was ALWAYS spinning and engaged, even in 2WD. It was a electro/mechanical coupling in the front drive axle (passenger side) that actually gave you 4WD.

Discovered this after the front dif spider gears were stripped clean, significantly reducing driveline resistance and greatly increasing mpg Hmmmmm

Looks like I have something to do today
