I just received this spin-on oil filter adapter from Baxter Performance (baxterperformanceusa.com) for my wife's '17 Highlander. If I like it enough, I'll be buying one for my Tundra before I mess with the cartridge filter again. Her Highlander is the "test mule", don't tell her I said so :). This thing appears to be very well built and is a solid piece; it must weigh close to 5lbs. Baxter Performance's Kevin Baxter said I should pair it with a WIX 51335 or Napa Gold 1335 filter (both manufactured by WIX from what I can tell). She's due for an oil change so it'll be installed in the next couple weeks. IMG_0047.jpg

I don't think they make one for our v8 engines.

Part number: TS-301-BK works with the Tundra's 5.7L V8. Kevin Baxter recommended one of the following two filters should I go with the Tundra adapter: Mobil 1 M1-209A or WIX 5156XP.

Installed the Baxter Adapter on my wife's Highlander this past weekend. Followed Baxter's instructions and torqued the adapter to 40lb/ft and then spun the Wix filter on. She has driven it for a couple days and hasn't had any issues. The Wix 51335 is a shorter filter than most other spin-on's I've used in the past, but Kevin Baxter said it still has more filter media than the stock Toyota filter has.

    May I ask why?
The cartridge filter change is super easy and oil does not go everywhere?

Good question. Unfortunately, I’ve cracked my wife’s filter housing on her Highlander and I’ve also cracked my Camry’s housing. Both were on so tight from the dealer that I got them to cover the replacements. I know I can buy an aluminum OEM housing but I wanted to try a different route. I had to use a 3ft breaker bar to free up the housing this past weekend and I was the last to install the housing at 10lb-ft. This leads me to believe they may tighten up or seize a bit over time but I’m not sure. So far I’m happy with my alternate route, but it wasn’t cheap. If I encounter any problems I’ll let everyone know.

I was just looking at a remote filter kit for Tundras.
Adapter goes onto original filter location with a couple of oil lines.
Mount the remote adapter inside the engine compartment or frame.
You can get a single filter or a double filter adapter.
Around $70.00 for the single and $110.00 for the double.

So does anyone have experience with these on a Tundra? When you remove the filter for the next oil change will the whole unit come loose if the filter is on tight?

I know most of us here are used to the simple twist off filter with our other vehicles, but with a few simple tools and the switch to the aluminum case (if you want), its not difficult at all. Never in a million years would I pay $200.00+ for changing over to the old style for a problem that doesn't exist other than to take a few more minutes for something as important as changing your oil correctly.

I don't like the idea of crawling under the truck to change filters anymore (being 68 does that to you).
Spin on filters are simpler to deal with thus, the most common type used on engines.
If heavy work is the norm for your Tundra and engine life is always front row, twin filters adds capacity and cleaning to that motor.
Both two important things in engine life.

You got that right. Not in a million years. Too many additional opportunities for vulnerability, leakage, and failure.

But, the aftermarket has something for everyone...I wonder if they considered these in TRD logo? :D:

I have had mine for about 2.5 years now. I have not had any problems with the whole assembly coming loose.

I actually had less problems with this setup than the stock setup. I never had a problem with the stock setup until I believe I got a bad o-ring in my NAPA Gold oil filter kit. I should have taken pictures but upon investigating the oil on my garage floor - the O-ring was no longer an “O” but rather smashed flat.

It could of been operator error but I doubt it.

The Baxter system let's you use premium filters of your choice. The factory sets do not have anti drain back valves.
Update: The TRD PRO Oil filters have the anti drain back valve. This is what I run. On second thought, I will replace the plastic cap an get an aluminum cap. < $30.
    Filters are around $14.

Would this fit with a skid plate?

Depends which skid plate I’m sure. But I can confirm it works with both the stock TRD Off Road skid plate and the aftermarket RCI skid plate WITH a slight modification.

Not all RCI’s require a modification. My friend Quaid (not on forum) has a 2011 with an RCI skid plate and has no issues with clearance and such.

I on the other hand with my skid plate had to modify the hex bolt for the little oil filter access door. Their bolt was a little long and came close to the oil filter.

All I had to do was swap the bolt out for a shorter one.

I also went with a shorter filter. Just to give myself that much MORE clearance. The filter cross reference I’ll have to get back to you on. If I remember correctly it’s the same filter used on the 4.7 Toyota engines.

Please ignore the oil mess on the skidplate. Different angle of the filter housing but the Toyota filter is a bit shorter.

Just had oil and filter changed and wondering if you have to drain the system to install the Baxter spin on filter adapter assembly?

I'm sure it does as it requires removing the stock filter housing and filter.
