    Hello everyone,

I recently bought my 02 Tundra. It just had a new frame put on last month. What is everyone using to prevent rust? Good ole northeast PA isn't very kind. I've heard fluid film 2x a year is good. But, won't it just wash off?

Rub Auto Grease (preferably Moly EP from autozoned) and squirt it with Oil (I used 5w-30 found on the side of road). Check out how sexy those Welds look glistening in their soaked reflectivity.

I would look into a rust-proofing / undercoating shop near you and get some quotes.
It is a messy job and requires some investment in tools if you want to DIY right.
My recommendation is a wax/oil based coating.

My 2012 Tacoma was professionally sprayed before 1st winter and it has held up well. I moved, so i never had the yearly touch-up sprays offer by the original shop.
I have used fluid film in the heavily exposed areas. but it does needs a yearly application.
The Tacoma is due for a professional touch-up spray but I haven't had time to fully prep and clean it. (7 years )
The only thing worse than not getting a rustproofing is sealing moisture in frame underneath coating.
Stay away from rubber encapsulation sprays. Many people have linex'd their entire frame, only to find out it rusts from the inside due to moisture trapped inside.

I did not get this to happen, I just bought it this month. But, it was done at a Toyota dealership about 2 hours away from me last month.

There is a shop near me that does undercoating for $400-$500 but I'm not sure what they use. I'll have to look into that and fluid film areas like you were talking about. I know about rubberized undercoating and it's harm though. I will never use that, as you said.

I would think you want to season it, like a cast iron skillet. I think that's why the grease rubs work so good. The pores of the metal are filled with the water repelling petroleum product. The rubber coatings just cover the metal, but moisture still finds its way in. Cheap way to do it at home is PHM's method. Wire wheel or scuff what visible rust you have, then hose 'er down with PB blaster. Excellent penetrative oil. Step two would be some grease rub with a sponge for a good coating. Now the metal is treated to be protected, not covered in something that will fail.

I guess my question is how did you get Toyota to do this work for you.

Did you have to pay? Did they warranty it on a 19 year old truck?

Asking because I have an '07 Tundra...

    Tools needed for post #2.

Sponge, tub of grease, half quart of oil/squirt bottle, flexible push rod, old paint brush, and about two half days work laying on the driveway. Total cost under $20 and lasts forever.

Skip the oil squirts and save $5.

You can see in that pic #2 above how the oil is crawling out of the hole. Thats a typical action from Synthetic Oil. Just imagine the folds and overlaps inside the frame where this crawling action is happening. The surface pores are filling as well.

I did not do any wire brushing. Everything was applied straight to frame without power washing or prep.
Surfaces had slight surface rust before Greasing 2 years ago which turned Doughy Matte Black finish in pic. Oiling a few weeks ago reactivated Grease and turned things slick.

They did this work before I purchased it. This was at Bennett Toyota in Allentown, PA. They put it through an auction this month and a family friend who owns a dealership bought it. I bought it from him after seeing it on his lot (because Holy crap, a new frame and in great condition overall). They did all of the service work last month. It shows as "Warranty Pay" on the Toyota Owner site (that's why it shows all work in my name, even though I didn't own it at the time). It had the rear crossmember replaced in 2011 under warranty too. Here are some screenshots. Wish I knew more about the situation to tell you.

I think he's saying he bought the truck two months after some toyota dealership put the new frame in. So he had nothing to do with the frame replacement.
