@Ckatz53 Yeah the wire it too tight to splice from just the handle side. I just completed so I have a couple of tips I did just let the door hang from the lead anchors just one lest step of removing and reattaching. I did razor off the silicone from the plastic and pealed down from the top exposing a small area to get my hand in. When done I just molded back the silicone to the plastic liner. Since I was inside the door panel I decided to add some hushmat as well. Thanks, Ckatz53 for all the pics and instructions it did make it easier to follow.

Nice job man. Yeah I really wish I had thrown some sound deadening material in there while I had it apart. I'll be back in there soon to do it hah.

Does anyone know if you can just take the limited handle apart so I can just paint the chrome part?

I was wanting to do the same. I took a handle off and started prying the chrome piece real quick and it seems to be just held into there with some 3m tape. Didn't go "all the way" as I only had a few minutes but I'll rip it off soon

Great write up by the way

Can you confirm it’s just 3m tape holding it on there?

Just went out and peeled it off. Those 2 little tabs arent connected to anything; I think more or less are guides. You just need to be careful as the chrome piece can lose it's shape if you bend it too much

Correction, that tab on the top does look snapped off, but its so small i don't see it doing much. The little tab in between those 2 posts was not connected to the handle even though it looks snapped off - probably from mass production or something..

    Thanks for this thread!

I will add that I did not disconnect the tweeters because I couldn’t figure out how to remove the harness plug. Wasn’t a problem.

Also, I did not cut the plastic liner but instead just peeled it back and then reattached it. The black silicone sealer is super sticky and goes right back like it was.

Did you place the hushmat between the plastic interior door panel and the thin plastic liner?

I just did this mod and referred to this DIY for guidance... super helpful and I was able to get all four done in about an hour start to finish.
Once thing I'll add is pay attention to the little white push clips that hold the door panel to the door.
When I pulled the panel a few of them stayed in the door. I had to pop them out with a small flathead and put them back into the panel before reinstalling. I didn't notice until trying to put the first panel back on and it just didn't feel right or line up perfectly. Turned out the push clips were not allowing it to pop back in correctly. Otherwise, pretty simple job since our trucks come apart and go back together like legos for the most part.

This was an amazing write up! I just did this, didn’t break a single plastic tab, and completed the install in about an hour. Thank you sooo much for taking the time to do this!

    Just getting started...
Is is possible to pull the chrome trim off for paint without removing the door handle from the truck?

Im still confused if I was to do the handle upgrade on my 17 platinum how would it detect my key fob and unlock the doors just at the touch of the handle? Isnt there something else needing to be added that would trigger the door to unlock.

If you don’t already have smart lock you would need more than just the handles. I’m not sure what, but I know more than just the handles.

Hey sorry. You could yeah, it isn't connected to anything other than the handle, but that tape is super strong. I got a crinkle in the one chrome piece i took off, just ended up 3m taping it back on for now...

Anyone tried to pull the inside sensor out of smart handle and put in a non smart handle? Was looking at dechroming limited handles and replacing with textured black.

This write up inspired me months ago, and I finally got around to it this weekend. Took about 2 hours total, as I added some Kilmat to the doors while I had the door panels off. A couple of things for others thinking about doing this:
    1) Getting the wire off the anchor - This stumped me for a while as I really didn't want to apply much force and its awkward to pull the wire harness out of the anchor. What worked for me was to grab a set of channellocks to pull the wire harness. One good pull in it slid right off.
    2) The kilmat (or whatever sound deadening mat you choose) might be the best part of this update. It's not dramatically quieter, but the stereo sounds so much better. I have the JBL system, and previously I would ride around with the volume at ~30. On my test ride, I turned the volume down to 20, and the sound was clear with good bass.

One of my favorite mods so far. Thanks @Ckatz53
