I'm wanting to debadge my truck and repaint the badges black, its a 2012 so I'm sure there will be a difference in the finish that's under the badges which is a driving force behind wanting to put them back on, I did a test run on my grill logo after I removed the factory chrome insert today and I'm happy with the results after a bit of sanding, two coats flat black, and two coats clear coat, how do I go about getting the badges back on? I'm assuming the factory adhesive will be no good so what are my adhesive options?

My 13 didn't have a difference in finish when I took them off......you might be okay. If you just want to black them out, leave them on the truck and spray them with plasti dip. If you are determined to r & r, then some good 3m double side tape is your friend. Mark where they belong really well before you remove them, you don't want to put them back in the wrong spot.:)

Go to the auto part store and get 3M double sided tape. Clean the back of the emblem and the area it mount to very well so it had a good sticking surface. They have different widths so find a width that matches. I would also make a mental note of where the factor tape was and try to mimic it simply bc they put it there so might as well to try to make sure you get the same quality connection.

I didn't consider leaving them on and using plasti dip, thanks man

I took off all badges but my Texas edition stars by my rear doors. I then taped around then with newspaper very well. I then sprayed them with plasti dip and put a few coats and then the clear. Let it sit then used a toothpick to pull (easy) looks great and has held up for 3 years.

So are you guys spraying the badges right on the vehicle, just masking the crap around it. I've looked at covers but they are not cheap. I've looked at new emblems, but they are even more expensive. One of the kids likes dark emblems, so we may be going that route.

How are you covering the painted portions in between the letters? Or do you paint on those portions and then pic it with the kabob?

Now just have to tell my wife I'm actually on a Tundra forum and looking at moding our brand new truck. :facepalm:Personally, I would prefer to de-badge it, but not sure how well that would go over with her either.

Go for the debadge.........it looks clean.
If she wont go for it, then yes, leave them on the truck. tape off around them , and apply several coats of PD. Then go back and pick out the spots you don't want dipped like ARamirez said in post #9.

Some people like the clean look, some people like the blacked out look, it's your truck it's up to you, either way it looks good

Agreed. So here's the scoop, our youngest 12 is a Forza racing game and car guy. This is something I never thought I'd be interested in, but the truck has changed that. My wife thinks I'm crazy with looking at upgraded and mods but it allows me and the little guy to bond and talk about stuff, look stuff up and make decisions on truck things....he loves the truck

I'm a simple guy, so this is more my style than all chromed and I'm too cheap to color match everything.

Can't argue with the clean look and I'm comfortable and confident doing that, than plastidip the logos and scrap off extra or removing them and realigning them to the same factory spots. Plus this gives us some ammo to present to her with regards to missing out truck with 700km on it

Plasti dip is the easier route, but 3M is the way to go if you’re pulling them off. Your truck- do what makes YOU happy, not the masses. ;)

Oh I know, just looking for thoughts and suggestions. And to be honest, debadging and plastidip weren't even in my vocabulary a week ago. See what you guys have done to me!

As far my de-badging mission goes, I got the go ahead to start with the SR5 badges..

We watched a couple videos, I showed her some pics and I think I'm winning her over.

Personally, I like the blacked out look, but I also debadged the Toyota and dealer badges from the back. I took fishing line on a hot Florida summer day and peeled them off. Then used WD-40 to remove adhesive and clay bar to remove the ghosting from the letters. Can't tell that there were badges there at all.
