Hey guys I have a 2006 tundra V8 double cab SR5. I want to change my differential fluid. I need to know if I have a limited slip differential. How would I find this out for my make and model? Also my manual calls for 90 weight rear differential fluid which I cannot find. Does anyone have a Brandon wait they suggest?

Maybe a local dealership can confirm based on VIN. I used to have a 2006 SR5 double cab V8 as well and it had a limited slip.

Put your VIN into this link:
    https://www.toyota.com/owners/vehicle-specification

and it will tell you if you have a limited slip. Other than that, the easiest way is to check the pumpkin for this sticker:

Make sure you use the lsd additive.

Yeah absolutely any specific brand of LSD Additive? I know Toyota does not make one that's what the dealership told me.

I prefer Mobil 1 LS 75w-90, has a friction modifier included.

I just got a 2006 tundra, also a V8 double cab SR5. I did use the VIN checked on that link. But it is says nothing about the differential, is that means I have a standard type differential?

On most vehicles that have a traditional mechanical limited slip you can tell by:

Jacking the rear of the vehicle so both rear tires are off the ground.

    Put vehicle in neutral.

Rotate one of the rear tires by hand.

If the opposite rear tire rotates in the same direction, you have a limited slip.

If the opposite rear tire rotates in the opposite direction, you have an open rear end.

I used this stuff without issue. If the unit keeps chattering as you turn corners then just add more friction modifier until the chattering stops.

Current trucks have an anti-spin rear end and use the ABS braking system to apply the brakes to the tire that is spinning faster. They do not have a LSD with a clutch and no option for getting one with Toyota pickups.

How much K&W friction modifier do I need to add to my 80w-90 gear oil (3.5qt??) = 4oz for friction modifier?

Also is there any other modifier that would work? for Ford kinds?

Hey guys so I am doing my Rear LSD differential change. on my new to me 322k miles 2006 2wd Tundra double cab. I am going to use Walmart's 80w-90 gear oil (1 gallon) which is not synthetic. But I need to add friction modifiers for it. How much do I need to add? for my truck it says I will need to add 3.5 qt. I am thinking of adding the K&W friction modifier - This one exactly
    K & W Chemical Trans-X® Posi Trac® Limited Slip Gear Oil Additive -- Part # 402508

    Thanks.

So.... This is fairly straight up. If your differential has EB197366-1FDF-4537-A69E-F4A811F57DCA.jpg an LSD sticker on the back, use a GL-5 rated oil

the lucas HD dino gear oil is the ONLY gear oil i've had that has not had chatter with my LSD. even with friction modifier with other gear oils. these diffs HATE the synthetic fluids.

Thanks! Great information. I’m due a change, I’ll pick up Lucas HD this week for my next change

Update: I swung by Auto Zone and picked up 4 jugs, only $7.99 each. Glad I decided to change it. Who ever had changed it last time didn’t quite top it off. Only 2 1/2 quarts ran out. On refilling I put in almost 4.

Yeah. What everyone else says above. The Dino Lucas 80w-90 is great for the Rear Diff.

The Transfer Case and Front Diff are 75w-90 and Synthetic works well on those. Might want to do those at the same time you are egg stinking the place up. Diff fluid is stanky.

I always used Valvoline 75w-90 and the whole bottle of the TransX LSD additive. Both from Autozone. No turning chatter with that combination for 245,000 miles, changing every 30,000 miles or so. When I only used half the bottle of additive, I had chatter on slow turns.
