Hi all, I recently bought a 2016 Tundra 4x4 in Super White (040) and it appears that the previous owner removed the 4x4 emblem on the tailgate and then scuffed the paint trying to get the adhesive off. The adhesive is gone, but that area is really hazy now. I don't think the clear coat has been compromised, but not sure how to shine it up so that it's not noticeably different from the polished paint around it.

I've just never had to do that to a car before. Any advice would be appreciated.

If the clear coat is compromised, then I'd say there is nothing you can do, other than to have it repainted. A less expensive option may be a decal of some sort, or put new badges on. If it shows up well on a pic, please post one

Start with a glaze/swirl remover. That will be the most gentle polish. You may have to work your way up from there to a polishing compound. I've been surprised before by what looked pretty bad turning to looking pretty good. Even if clear coat is hurt, bringing the shine up can make it better match the surrounding finish. Good luck!

Thanks all, I'll try to post a pic shortly. I don't think the clear is compromised but just significantly scuffed.

After color sanding, automotive paint is completely flat matte before polishing. Fixing that hazy spot should take about five minutes using a Porter Cable 7424 RO polisher, Lake Country CCS orange foam pad, and 3M 05973 rubbing compound.

You may find you have some clearly deeper tool mark scuffs after a first easy pass. Those will be the last to polish out if you try to polish them out with compound. You will have to decide if they are deep enough that you need to carefully level the tool marks with 2000 grit paper before proceeding with polishing. Stop polishing when it's as shiny as the rest. Hopefully, you will have enough clear coat to not wear through.

Great advice! Thanks so much! I'm gonna give it a try. I don't have a RO polisher, but I think my buddy does!

If that's the case, then there may be hope. I'm hesitant to give you any advice without seeing it, or at least a pic

You can see the hazy area just above the dealer emblem. It’s really hard to get a very good shot.

Looks as though it can be saved. Always go least aggressive first, so a polish may end up being all you need. That's where I would start, and go to a compound if it does not give you the results you're looking for.

If you have never used a buffing pad/wheel before, make sure you understand how to operate it. I am sure there is a YouTube video showing you how it is done. You need to make sure the rotation is away from the hard edge of the tailgate and not into the edge. Secondly, let the wheel do the work... a light pressure is all that is needed. You may want to take it to a shop and have them buff it out if you are hesitant.

Better to use a random orbital polisher that does not require that kind of caution. Rotary polishers are much faster, but should be left to the pros imo.

Well, I went yesterday to get a small dent removed by a great PDR guy and after he did the dent repair, I asked him to look at the scuff and he said...no problem. He pulled out some 3000 grit sandpaper and then hit it with some polish on a RO polisher and it looks brand new. Thanks for all the insight thought...I'll keep it in my back pocket for the next time!

Next time try fishing line or nylon string to remove emblems...I'll get the exact product name. Buddy did some the other day at his sign/vinyl shop.

Thanks. I'm familiar with how to remove them. This removal and damage was done by the previous owner, not me.
