Cool thread. I run Linux now, but when I ran winblows I liked to use an older version of Inventer. Can t remember what version it was, but it came with Fusion before it became Fusion 360, and was just a free addon. Fusion was quite a revelation, and it didn t take autodesk long to figure that out, change the name, and start charging for it. What I liked about inventor was I could make my solid in Inventor, and import ipt file directly into mastercam. I used an old dos based mastercam, v9, with only surfaces, so Inventor made it a whole lot easier, Before I got Inventor I was making surfaces in mastercam, and was pretty daunting. Patching them together, and subsequently creating toolpaths off of them was so time intensive, (especially when the program crashed, which it did occasionally, and I d have to start all over), but I learned a lot. A few years ago I was planning on buying a Tormach PCNC 440 mill, but my situation turned shyty, and I ended up moving to a second floor apt, so a mill is out of the question. I m still hoping though...

I ran an old emco 3 axis desktop mill when I worked in a cabinet shop. I was machining wood making small stuff for the shop, and a few craft items. I ended up turning out some nice projects.

I was going to go back to making this kind of stuff when I got my own mill, but that s not happened yet.

That was satisfying to watch. Which machine do you have. I started looking into CNC but I don't want anything too big. Just something to DIY stuff on and possibly make a little bit of money on the side to help pay for the machine.

This is the machine I was going for. It s not a big footprint, but the build quality is good, has a 10,000 rpm spindle, and the premium package includes an auto tool changer.

Dang, ATC Tool setter AND probe? That's not a bad price if the size is right. What's the work envelope?

My only concern would be rigidity, it looks a little thin between the table and cabinet.

If you click the picture it will take you to their website. I think it s like 12"x10' or something like that.

I went with a OneFinity Woodworker. It takes up a 48" X 48" worktop not including space for the controller and drawers for all of the things associated like Bits, wrenches, measuring equipment, clamps. It is a great tool that was very easy to assemble. Nice thing is it is easy to disassemble and take someplace else, set it up and be up and running within an hour or so.

Boy this is bringing back memories. I was a machinist for 30 years and ran both Mazak CNC mills and lathes. Lost my job when the economy went south in 2008. The thing I miss the most was making anything that I needed at the time.

Just some fooling around I was doing, things to keep me on track when my brain don't work. This was on a piece of MDF with a few coats of Pecan Poly Stain. Still trying to learn optimal feeds and speeds....

Anyone know how to project an array, (drawing), onto a curved surface in inventor? I m trying to extrude-cut the array so that it s normal to the entire surface.

I don't use inventor, but is there an option in the project menu to project to surface/plane?

I found this on the Google web:

"On the ribbon, click 3D Model tab Sketch panel Create 3D Sketch . On the ribbon, click 3D Sketch tab Draw panel Project to Surface ."

    Edit:
Would it be easier to extrude THROUGH the surface then do a surface cut?

What I m trying to model is a sub woofer grill. It s basically an array of 6 sided polygons. I can make the part, and I can make the array, but it s behond me how to put the two together, and make it come out right. Here is a pic.

I would make the part and use the sketch to do a cut thru-all.

A retirement gift for a friend. It was a combination of disciplines, woodworking, CNC, and mechanical. Took way more time than I anticipated as the weather would not cooperate with me putting on a finish. Finally gave up and put some Odies Oil on the wood.IMG_5799.jpg

When I was in grad school I became obsessed with the idea of building a cnc plasma table. Shortly after graduating I made one.The wife was not super thrilled at me building this in our one bedroom apartment. It’s funny how the tables have turned though.
