I just bought a new ‘21 truck and wonder what’s the best way to protect the new paint? Should I pay for detailed ceramics coat on truck? Or is this a DIY job?

Congratulations on your new Tundra. Unfortunately, there is no best way, as that is subject to interpretation. Ceramics and/or graphene coatings are the longest lasting forms of paint protection out there. Is is something you can do yourself?...absolutely. Like most jobs, prep is the key, and to properly prep, you'll need to invest in some products and tools to get it done right. There's a thread in this forum that outlines the steps to properly detail a vehicle, and even though I don't necessarily agree with all of it, it will give you some insight into the process. Here's a link:

I realize you are talking about the whole truck, but check out paint protection film from (clear bra) SunTek which can be purchased at lamin-x.com

I installed a bunch myself to protect the front end from rock chips, etc. So glad I did!

Depends on what you are looking for. There are two main types of protection: Paint Protection Film and Ceramic/Graphene coatings. Both can be DIY but if you haven't done either before there can be a steep learning curve and a lot of room for errors. Unless it is a passion project I would pay someone to do it; depends on how much your time is worth.

How long do the acrylics last? I was considering using one on my next project.

Ceramic coating is amazing stuff. I spent about 1200 to get the entire truck coated (rims/windows) along with getting my lights covered with PPF. I would do it again in a heartbeat. It doesn’t protect against chips but everything wipes off with minimal effort. Bird poop, salt, road grime, etc etc. There are some faint scratches but unfortunately I have to go through automated car washes in the winter to get the salt off. It looks incredibly good...I swear by the stuff, it’s not some hack science like I initially thought.

I've seen some acrylic based polish glazes used (Xtreme solutuons lvr 403) as the base prep for a ceramic coating. Looked great, high gloss. If the acrylic base lasts 3+ years, this may be a go to approach for me.

Apex Detail had a review of XS LVR 403

    Haha! Thanks Youtube algo!

I was impressed by his results too. Worst case scenario its a one year coating, the results were worth it.

Brian is so talented, he could probably use a stick of butter to buff paint damage out an make it look good.

Have you looked into PPF at all yet? I'm seriously considering Xpel PPF when I pick up my new Tundra.

I have the Xpel PPF on my head lights...it’s pretty stout. It’s done a good job keeping the nicks off the actual headlight. There are some nicks in the PPF though. If I had the money I would have gone the Xpel PPF for the front hood and fenders. I felt paint contamination protection was more important in my case because my truck sits outside in sometimes salty conditions mixed in with diving “bombing” birds.

Still looking into durability but as a base for a coating it looks like 24-48 hours minimum cure time. This may explain one reason why high turnover detail shops don't use as part of their offerings.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1xp5_tEkVs&t=0s

So per Xtreme solutions: This product is intended to be used pre coating, with a 12-24 hour cure time from detergents or IPAs. It won’t effect the longevity of whatever coating you apply on top, if anything it gives it a better surface to bond to. The acrylics will last as long as the coating above it does. So if it’s an 18+ month coating then it will last as long as the coating survives

Wow beautiful truck! I image if I can notice the subtle change on picture you can see it more in person.

Thank you! The change was very noticeable. It has to be super dirty to not look “clean”. The maintenance is super easy. I do have a few swirl marks because sometimes I just want to get the winter salt off ASAP and don’t use the proper cleaning techniques. But they really are barely visible...I cannot say enough good things.
