Tundra limited Merged with Darrell Walter edition. plastic Removal of bedcaps and Fender Wells. Custom made tailgate and sidebed metal Made. Installed With green panel bond. Raptor liner installed in the bed. Everything but the truck cab came off down to the frame. Took off all the loose rust with wire wheels. Por 15 All accessible metal parts. I did all the work on the body and the frame machine at school where I was attendingLincol Tech for auto body. I did all the body work tainted and cleared this Tundra. It also has and fab 3 Step running boards. It also has a rebuilt transmission about 70000 miles ago. Soon to come as a Turbo kit with more than likely a standalone E you with it. And then when Everything else is done mechanically and cosmetically interiors last .
Looking at purchasing a totaled 2004 4x4 tundra I'm wondering if the transmission and transfer case are going to be the same, as my 06 Limited? The bed and rear doors appear to be the same.

Nope. 04 uses the A340 trans and 05-06 use the A750

Thanks. I wasn't sure what year they changed transmissions.

Would the engine fit my transmission?

If I buy it it will mostly be for the bed and tailgate.

You wouldn’t want it. 04 are pre-VVTI and have a significant decrease in power. Plus you’d likely need to change the full engine harness as well as the ECU.

Nothing against the 04 and down guys but all in all, for you, it would be a major step backwards.

A750 is a really nice tyranny and I would hate go back to the 4speed.

Not too important since you have an '06, but food for thought for anyone else in a transmission rabbit hole.

Do we have very many examples of the 00-02 having that problem?

I had a 2005 that ate it's transmission at 98K miles and I'm aware of other A750s of the same time frame that did the same.. I think in general the A340s are some of the most reliable ATs ever built by anyone. I think they are both reliable, but if I had to bet my life on one or the other, I'd go with the A340. It's been in soooooo many vehicles with a stellar reputation (Check out all the applications it's been in here on pages 3 and 4 https://natpronet.com/trans/A340.pdf). I wouldn't avoid a 2000-2002 Tundra based on this, but if I was looking for a used A340 as a replacement, there are SO many out there, I'd probably avoid ones put in 2000-2002 Tundras just because you can.

Both A340s and A750s show up here...

My 2000 is on it's original tranny. While I've done a reasonable job of maintaining it, pan drop and new filter at 100k miles (when I purchased it 16 years ago) and a few drain and fills since, I've abused it at times and not had any issues. Towed beyond the rating, towed often, run slightly larger tires, buried it up in the mud numerous times etc. So I'm not sure how universal the issue was. Often these failures affect a percentage but not all, or they would have to recall the item in question.

I’ve got a gently used A750E sitting on the ground in my garage right now if anyone in TX is in the market.

Yeah. I’m still on my Original A340F with 175k. Its towed and hauled alot. Never overheated or broken down. You make a good point on it being in other vehicles with success.

Maybe my 2002 got the ‘early upgrade’? Manufactured in USA in March 26. Tranny probably months earlier in Japan.

At this point in miles, if she was going to have a problem then it would have happened.

I think the planetary gear thing is overblown personally. It's like 2000-2002 A340s are "only" 99.5% as reliable as non-2000-2002 A340s..
