    My very first Toyota truck was this most excellent 1996 Extra-Cab T100, it was a V6 4x4 SR5.

    96T100.jpg

    The great ownership experience that I had with that T100 led to the purchase of this 4262 pound 2002 SR5 4WD in June of 2003. I sold the T100 about 2 years after buying the Tundra... I wish that I could have kept it. The new-to-me Tundra was a CPO truck that suddenly became available at my local dealer... it had 17,700 miles on it when I bought it.

    user1_pic14681_1445692833.jpg

    17 years and 153,000 miles later the Tundra is still going strong, follow along as I look back and document our journey together and look toward the future. The bed and rails were sprayed with Line-X 06/2003.

    Purchasing a CPO truck has it's benefits, a great warranty is just one of these benefits.

    The truck was originally sold by my local dealer so I inherited the service writer who worked with
    the original owner, he knew the truck and helped me get the following TSB/Warranty work completed.

    @17,392
    Front caliper upgrade - TSB prior to trade-in

    @18,568
    TRD LSD installed - Out of pocket

    @29,644
    Oxygen sensors replaced - TSB
    Loose antenna replaced - TSB
    Squeaky V-belts replaced - Warranty
    Seat rattle fixed - Warranty

    @31,535
    Grease drive shaft splines - Warranty
    Squeaky leaf pack replaced (L) - Warranty

    @32,653
    Squeaky leaf pack replaced (R) - Warranty
    Loose center console lid replaced - Warranty

    @34,787
    Squeaky/rattling windows fixed - TSB
    Rear brake drums replaced - TSB

    @38,500
    Lower Ball Joint replacement - Warranty

    JBA shorties were installed August of 2005, they replaced the factory manifolds that had cracked after the warranty had expired, the JBA's remain in service today.

    2010sbig.jpg

    As you can see, I have every intention of keeping this 2002 for a very long time.

    Thats awesome your service under writer went to bat for you on all those TSB’s. My stealership, where I did mucho maintenance and service work, ‘over looked’ every single one of those TSB’s except the o2 Sensors.

    He's retired now, cool guy and I still see him driving his white '98 T100 around town... he purchased it new. I remember that he took some heat from the old service manager, but both of us agreed that the TSB's should have been performed prior to my purchase... we won the argument.

    This Long Bed became my dedicated work truck late in 2005 when I sold the T100, it wore this LEER high top cap until 2019.

    Iphos00069-1.jpg

    Early on I installed an ARB bumper and Wheelers front coils springs, I removed both because I hated the way it rode & handled. I re-installed the factory front bumper, and replaced the Wheelers coils with OEM coils from a TRD 4x4 Tundra.

    IMG_1210.jpg

    I installed HD Bilstein 4600 shocks all the way around, plus a Hellwig rear anti-roll bar.

    IMG_7020 (2).jpg

    The truck rides & handles great on 16" Michelin radials. LTX M/S on the original Enkei alloys most of the time, XPS Traction tires on steel wheels during winter.

    I replaced the factory single disc AM/FM Cassette head unit with a factory 6-disc AM/FM Cassette head unit plus OEM amp late in 2005, it's still working 100% today. I installed a set of Wet Okole seat covers that I purchased used on ebay early in 2004, the seat bottom was replaced under warranty last year and they are still protecting the original cloth seats today.

    IMG_7237.jpg

    I also performed the 'always-on' fog light mod around the same time, the truck did not come with fog lights but it was wired for them... all I had to do was install the lights, plug them in and add the OEM switch & relay to the dash. I had the dealer remove the DRL and badges before taking delivery of the truck.

    IMG_7697.jpg
    Toyota (81211-0C010).jpg

    I also replaced the original tail light housings with a set of OEM 2005 tail light housings, the new tail light housing are brighter and easier for drivers following me to see.

    I thought the same thing. I'm shocked they would replace leaf packs for squeaking. Nice write up @Rex Kramer

    Unexpected major repairs since I purchased the truck.

    #1. In 2013 I started hearing a bearing noise from the rear, but it didn't sound like a wheel bearing.
    A local independent Import repair shop that I had worked with before convinced me that the noise was coming from the front right wheel bearing, they replaced it @131,297 and nothing changed. I continued to drive the truck, and then returned to my dealer where I convinced their Master Tech to inspect the truck. @133,641 the dealer replaced damaged bearings in the differential as well as the wheel bearings & seals because the axles had to be removed to work on the differential. The noise has not returned.

    #2. I had smelled coolant from time to time, and I had the cooling system pressure tested twice but we never found a leak. In Sept of 2018 the original radiator cracked, it was replaced with OEM @159,755.

    That's all so far.

    My SR5 4WD has worn 3 different bed caps, the 1st was a high top LEER that was replaced under warranty after over a decade of use.

    IMG_3960.jpg

    Because LEER no longer makes a high top for the Long Bed Tundra / T100 they replaced the original with a brand new cab height cap. This new cap was really nice, but it was too low for me to work out of so I sold it.

    IMG_7605.jpg

    It was fun driving around in this truck without a cap for a few weeks, light & quick.

    IMG_2093.jpg

    This commercial A.R.E. high wedge cap is what I am working out of today... it's huge, but it's also much lighter than either of the fiberglass LEER caps.

    IMG_7751.jpg

    My work includes delivering 50 pound salt blocks for water softeners, this salt ate the bottom seam on the original tail gate. The new A.R.E. cap eliminated the tail gate... one less problem to worry about.

    IMG_7753.jpg

    A few years ago the original Enkei alloys were replaced with a set of Toyota alloys taken off a 2005 Platinum, the tires are 265/70R16 LTX M/S²

    I replaced the severely oxidized original head light housings with new OEM housings a couple of years ago. I installed S-V.4 LED H4/9003 bulbs in my new OEM housings, they are plug-n-play and work great. No scattering effect or blinding of other drivers, they even have the proper cut-off.

    IMG_6227.jpg

    I recently had the hood and roof sprayed with Line-X.

    I like not having to wash & wax the hood & roof, but the added weight on the hood will probably shorten the life of the original hood lift cylinders.

    Been exploring options for my hood and roof. Do you mind me asking how much it was for your hood and roof job? Thinking the roof more so for my situation and repaint on the hood. It has rust spots.

    The truck sustained minor damage when a drunk driver plowed into my neighbors parked vehicles forcing one of them to impact my truck. The estimate for repair was $999.00... I paid my local PDR guy $200 to work out the dents, and then I installed the old OEM moldings that I've had in storage for many years.

    Sounds like you had the JBA's a long time. I had planned on adding to my 2003 based on online reviews. But there is a large local muffler shop near me. That otherwise has a great reputation. The owner talked me out of them. He said they have installed a lot. And most keep coming back with exhaust leaks to be fixed. So does not recommend them at all.
    The main thing I like about my Tundra is the dependability and no problems. So I did not want to add one.
    Have you had any problems?
    If you have gone 15 years with no problems and others that review them as good. Sounds like I need a new muffler shop. Or he was talking about other trucks in general. And not just the Tundra with the JBA's

    Any opinions? Thanks

    New headers would be nice. Most of the ones I’ve seen installed here were mangled by DIY upon the install. Maybe a professional shop with the PROPER GASKETS would do a great job. Seems its the gaskets that are the key plus having a professional do the job. Or, if you have Golden Hands you’d be good.

    They have been problem free all these years.
    I had my local dealer install them using OEM gaskets, and I think there was something special about the nuts they used.

    My 2002 Limited is at 272,000 miles. I bough it new in October, 2001. I have replaced the transmission @ about 250,000 with a Toyota rebuilt unit and the rack and pinion unit @ about 250,000. Very dependable truck. I am on my 4th radiator (The original Toyota radiator went 150,000 miles but aftermarket units do not do as well.) and also have replaced the timing belt 4 times. It tows my 2500 # bass boat well.

    She cleaned up pretty well, but she still needs a chrome rear bumper.

    The rubber bushing in the mounting eyes of the 4600 series Bilstein shocks I installed 07/2003 are beginning to fail, so my old SR5 will have a new pair of front shocks installed pretty soon.

    Old part # : BE5-6024 @ $80.00 ea.
    New part # : 24-185387 @ $93.00 ea.

    The rubber parts are NOT covered by the warranty.

    Much better now.

    Edit: The upper control arm & ball joint on the passenger side were damaged years ago during an unnecessary repair by a local shop I coincidentally stopped using years ago... both will be replaced soon.

    Edit #2: Both the UCA & UBJ were replaced on the passenger side yesterday (03/23), the front end was aligned and all is well again.

    I heard from the guy that bought my '96... he still has it and tells me it now has 334,000 problem free miles on it.
