Thanks for all the gas tank info. When I asked my Toyota dealership about the size of my gas tank they referred me to page 111 in the owners manual about the tank average and range. I told them I wasn't buying into their explanation. The math doesn't work, either there is unusable fuel in tank or it's not a 38 gallon tank as they claim. You would think that they would share the fact that they need to have the reserve in the tank. It would explain things better rather than point out to you that you must be some kind of idiot!!! Read the owners manual.... Really!! Thanks Lancaster!

I should have a 38 gallon tank. There is apparently about 6 gallins of unusable fuel.

Jim is correct. You have a 38 gallon tank with an overly cautious gauge. You can drive past the empty/0 miles. The fuel is not unusable.

You have a 38 gallon tank and Toyota does that on purpose. When range hits "0" you will still have about 6 gallons left.

    1. The fuel is what cools the fuel pump. Having that safety net of 6 gallons will help keep the pump submerged and cool for those that never even think about getting gas until warning lights go off.

    2. In case somebody is 50 miles away from civilization when the low fuel lights go off, this provides enough range to get you to safety.

Not a bad thing that Toyota does this, but overly cautious compared to other manufacturers.

Not just 50 miles away from civilization. Apparently during the snowpocalypse, you can be on I-10 200 miles west of San Antonio with no fuel on the interstate for the next 200 miles as I was. Dropped my travel trailer at an RV Park right off the interstate, drove 50 miles to the closest gas station and filled 34.7 gallons of gas, the most in my 3 years of ownership.

Thanks Toyota for that guage that reads empty with 6 gallons left.

Why do people keep saying it's unusable? Damage arguments aside, you can definitely "use" a lot of that fuel.

Not sure where the pickup is as I haven’t dropped my tank and looked, but it’s such a large tank that if the vehicle was off camber and or on a hill in the correct direction to move the remaining fuel away from the pickup it could be unusable. With only 6 gallons in the tank.
At the end of the day It is a 38 gallon tank. You get plenty of range. It’s much greater than the standard tank option. The light comes on early enough to make it to a gas station and not leave you stranded. Seems like something people complain about when their trucks run without issue for 700,00 miles

Most people don't read the owners manual. That's why they have the built in reserve. Most people are idiots too.

If you don't believe the above responses, your manual, links and your dealers explanation, pay a garage to replace your tank with a 38gallon tank and enjoy your extra tank capacity.

I've said it before and, unfortunately, I'll probably say it again: if you want to put more fuel in the tank, drive farther before you stop to gas up. It's not rocket surgery.
