Is it worth paying for under 100k miles in a 2nd gen?

    I was looking for a 2nd Gen Tundra to replace my 2000 FGT. The FGT has 222K on it and in the last year and a half needed complete rear brakes (including wheel cylinders due to rust), rear diff seal and then the alternator replaced. So I started looking for a 2nd Gen.

    Here in New England, the market is so hot that the things FLY off dealer lots and out of the online ads. Trying to get the seller to let you take it to a mechanic is iffy - the sellers would rather just sell it to someone else who doesn't want to do that. Checked one out at a dealer that was AS IS - $35 at a local mechanic showed that the rear frame member was rotted through. And in Vermont, you CANNOT pass state inspection with a repaired frame. The salt we put on the roads up here KILLS vehicles.

    And my mechanic (who's also a close friend) was concerned that with the 2000 aging as it was, and knowing I use it for keeping my driveway clear in winter and towing a trailer to gun shows, that it was going to start costing me even more. Especially as the front fenders both have rusted through and will need to be replaced before he can inspect it. So I bit the bullet and looked at recent lease returns AND new.

    Even with an $18K downpayment, I'd be paying off a new one for the lease and probably another 6 years afterwards to buy it. I found a 2018 with 41K miles and bought that - most expensive thing I've ever bought that I didn't live in. BUT it should last me for a good long time.

    If you're in the rust belt and want a 2nd Gen, you might want to plan a road trip down south to get something that hasn't had to drive through salty roads. Good luck.

    Paid 18k for my 14 platinum with 173k miles. Has 212k now and runs great. I took my 8k camper all over with it. If maintenance has been done I wouldn't worry a bit about the high mileage.

    I'm sold on the higher milage. Just shopping for the right vehicle. We're in a position to shop for as long as it takes. A platinum sounds gooood

    All cosmetic so far see my posts in 2nd gen Black out chrome in progress….
    No major issues with mine. A recommended differential fluid drain and fill....input?
    And throttle body and MAF clean. At 90k

    bought this 08 tundra 4 years ago for 15K had 120K it now has 210K and runs like new. Had what i consider normal wear and tear repairs including bearings, brake calipers and when the air pumps went out i did the Hewitt bypass kit a year ago(saved thousands) was truly plug and play so knowing that those go out for high mileage tundras i would have no qualms buying another with relatively high mileage. Only repair i did not do myself since i got lazy was the timing belt change as it is the 4.7l version which requires it 5.7 doesn't in 2nd gen. Budget accordingly if you go high mileage but personally if the engine tranny check out i would not hesitate to buy another high mileage tundra.
