I would have no issues purchasing it @ that price; from what I'm seeing, they're going for more than that.

This! I bought an Exmark Lazer HP with a 23 hp Kawasaki about 15 years ago and it was a lawn-mowing beast (3 acres).

I also second buying a used commercial mower. I’d suggest calling some local landscapers and ask what they do with their equipment? It’s spring time and they may be looking to upgrade and sell their old stuff.

    LOL I love these threads.

OK for those who say that HD and Lowes only sell crap mowers, not "real john deers" or cub cadets or whatever.

You can go to any john deere, cub cadet or toro dealer and see the same exact mowers there, that you see at HD or Lowes.

Now do those dealers who are brand specific and servicing dealers have models that HD and Lowes do not have access to, why yes they do. Does that make the mowers that HD and Lowes sell junk? Nope not one damn bit.

Now for the most part box stores as some folks like to call them, do sell light duty, residential mowers, these are geared more for the weekend warrior home owner and with decent care can last 10 years or so, I know last year I replaced my aging 10 year old cub cadet ltx1050 with a cub rzt42 in zero turn, wish I had went a little bigger, but hey it works.

Can you go and spend thousands more on a scagg, hustler, bad boy, or any other brand that has a commercial type mower thats geared for the guy mowing lawns 7 days a week 10 months a year, yup you sure can and that mower will have lots more options, sturdier frame, larger engine, more powerful transmission, mow faster, have a faster blade tip speed and all that.

Its your choice, but please do not lump all the mowers that HD, Lowes, ACE, Orchslens etc as garbage and junk.

There are mowers for all budgets, like there are tundras for all budgets.

Thats all for now folks. Have a great day.

I bought a Bobcat 48" hydro drive with 14 hp Kawasaki engine and it works great.

Purchased used for around $2,000 from a shop in Ossining when I still lived in Westechester.

    This was in 2015.

I figure with cutting my lawn around once a week, with proper maintenance it should last forever, keeping in mind it was designed to be used commercially.

How many hours are on it? It’s a nicer residential unit, not a commercial one.

3k puts you well in the range of a used 5 series Deere or a good Kubota

    Prefer new - I paid around 3500 for a x370 Deere

Zero turns are fine for large/flat yards with no landscaping. Otherwise get a garden tractor.

Hills are a big concern where I lived - check the transmission as that and not the engine is most likely to fail.

Toro is a good name on ZT - BadBoy I've dealt with a little and some other names just above your budget new.

    Ah, My type of thread.

It depends on what you can afford. I have run (do not own) a 6 million dollar landscape company, buy once, cry once is my motto.

Look in to Exmark or Ferris, legit commercial grade and will literally run for years I own a 48" emark, I never had an issue with it. I have not changed the oil in 2 years, sharpen the blades 2x a year, and it starts every time.... more money yes of course, better mower - no doubt.

You get what you pay for in mowers. A lot of good advice here. I would stay away from toro commercial mowers though. Their replacement parts are expensive.

Of all our mowers at work two are zero turn. One John Deere and one Kubota. The problem with the John Deere is the the deck pivots under your feet and sucks in hills always bending your knees for you, two front wheels and one tail wheel. The kubota has a floating deck but tears up the grass easily. My favorite mower out of all sorts of mowers (riding-tractor-batwing) is a John Deere W36M - out of OPs price range unfortunately.

The main difference between box store mowers and others is the deck. That doesn’t mean you won’t see a “cheap” one at your local dealers.

I have a Husqvarna MZ54S and it has been a very well built and reliable mower (2.5 acres). But if I was buying today and did not want to spend a lot of money I would get the Ariens Icon XD. With zero turns it is all about the frame, motor, and drives. The Ikon has a 23hp Kawasaki commercial engine, heavy duty frame and fabricated deck, and Hydro-Gear drives. Heck of a package at a fair price.

There are also differences in hydro drives

ZT2200 is basically the bottom tier of the hydro gear trans

    ZT2800 is mid grade

I prefer 3200 series or higher due to speeds and also beefier internals

YouTube has helpful videos on that info

Very true, but 1.5 acres will not be hard on the lower end Hydro Gear. I have ZT3100's but would like the ZT3200 or ZT3400. But with the nicer drives comes higher prices and more commercial duty. If you are willing to spend north of $5K, more rugged options are out there. I use a three bagger on my MZ54s so the stamped deck (10yr warranty) was my best option. At the time you had to buy a $1000 blower assy to be able to bag properly. If I had the money, a nice Kubota would be sitting in my workshop, not my Husky.

I have owned several brands of “commercial”mowers. I have never paid more than $2k for a unit. I’ve been doing this since 2013.

Commercial doesn’t mean what you think it means. Deception is afoot when it comes to those marketing terms.

Most all my mowers all drove and ran when purchased unless i was after parts. The most common/ expensive issue (outside of motor or trans) I’ve encountered was carb or belt issues. Those can be remedied easily if you know how to shop for parts. Chinese carburetor parts and kits are to be avoided at all costs.

I have seen more failures on the lower end Hydro Units than anything else. They have stamped or plastic gears, and do not have pressure relief/over travel valves On them. Most of the time the units are sealed, non serviceable, but not always the case.

Kawasaki is King in my book, and always the most desirable when trading/selling the mower

Just because something has a Kawasaki motor doesn’t mean it’s a good machine either. You can have a good engine but a junk trans or deck and that’s a waste of money IMO

I have seen a higher failure on Kohler and Briggs than anything else. I detest electronic/auto choke systems (they cause issues) and prefer an actual choke cable.

I would also walk away from a single cylinder engine no matter how good the deal is. They have plastic guts

Yes,I have walked away from some purchases or made lowball offers due to issues I have found.

Also if somebody claims low hours but the meters broke, always throw up a red flag and assume it has higher hours or it’s been unplugged. I cannot tell you the amount of
Mowers I have looked at that were simply unplugged meters and were evidence of a fabricated story.

There are also things to look at when driving and idling for the hydro system. If you or anybody else wants a detailed list feel free to PM me.

In General, If you know what you’re doing, and look November Through January....you can score BIG

I will reiterate....just look at motors. You can get a 5 series John Deere with the Kawasaki engine. Or you can get an Exmark Laser with essentially the same engine. Prices very greatly but its all about the inner workings and the best engine is the Kawasaki

Considering I haven’t even driven a ZT yet, buying a used one is a little scary. Thanks for the wealth of knowledge gents. I think I have narrowed down to three new ones. I will have to check the dealers out to see what the price out the door of each is with attachments. Both have Kawasaki engines and medium duty fabricated decks.

    https://www.bettseq.com/inventory/2021-ariens-ikon-xd-52-kawasaki-915267-new-hope-pa-18938-10914570i

    https://www.tannerslawnandsnow.com/inventory/toro-50-timecutter-75750-newtown-pa-18940-10405919i

This last one is the sleeper pick. Same price as the ones above but has a smaller cutting deck, smaller engine (Kohler), but seems more heavy duty overall (commercial grade 7 ga. deck).

I dont have anytime with the Toro but I really like their push mowers.

Badboy makes my tractor implements and if you go that route just inspect everything carefully. I had to send back a box blade because of some quality issues. They weren't major and I could have lived with it but I bought it new so I sent it back and the new one had zero issues

Bad Boys aren’t all that bad of a choice considering the “cheap” options out there.

I am having difficulty finding info on what transmission the Bad Boy uses. I absolutely run away from sealed units.

I have a co worker who uses BB’s over the last several years for his grass cutting side business. He has a good report about them and has convinced several other cheap co workers to buy them for personal use.

The TimeCutter has a Kawasaki engine, but has lowest end 2100 series trans

If the Ariens has a Kawasaki Engine and ZT2800 Transmissions it would be on my radar.

Also if you haven’t checked out BobCat brand zero turns they are absolutely phenomenal beasts. I have had several and they are HD in every way,and also have a longer factory warranty than most

I’ve had high end residential and a low end commercial Cub Cadet zero turns that I bought to fix and flip. Main weaknesses were crap hydro transaxles that never had fluid changes.

I would recommend to always buy mowers with serviceable hydro transmissions with external spin on filters. I found a fixer upper commercial Bobcat 61” for around $2000 that I use for my half acre(record cut time is 14 minutes!). It has a giant spin on hydro filter on an external reservoir with a heat exchanger the size of most car transmission coolers.

The sealed for life transmissions are a myth and are the main issue with the residential lines of zero turns. Having a great Kawasaki engine and a strong fabricated deck is fine until you have a hydro problem and a $1500 repair bill. If you must buy a sealed transaxle mower, blow all grass clippings off the entire engine, deck, transaxles, etc. Packed grass clippings don’t allow airflow and lead to overheated engine, trans, spindles, etc. Also check for any oil leaks at end of every mow. A small oil leak can attract dirt and lead to airflow issues also.

Also keeping the correct tire pressure is important as the rear tires are the suspension of the machine. I keep my rears at 8–10 PSI max. Running them at 20 psi transmits lots of bumps and vibration into the transaxle bearings.

I have always been told the box store ones are not built the same.
Everyone has an opinion and do a quick search and you can find all kinds of info like this https://www.homeconstructionimprovement.com/should-you-buy-john-deere-mowers-at-box/ or this https://www.mylawnmowerforum.com/threads/big-box-stores-vs-dealers.264/.

Also, there are some pretty good videos on youtube. This one just got uploaded the past few days: https://youtu.be/SyKV3uibxR8

When we moved we went to the local JD dealer and bought the largest liquid cooled gas lawn tractor from them as wanted something built stronger. We went the tractor and not zero turn route as thought it would be better as it would allow more attachments and be able to use it for snow removal.

Had it for over ten years and it did what we needed it for but it is now getting tired as it is pretty much used year round.
Probably should have gone with a liquid cooled diesel and not liquid cooled gas with the 10 acres but live and learn.
Oh, also was part of that class action suit years back as the advertised 26 HP Kawasaki on the tractor was lower than actual so got a check back for like $5.

This year decided to pull the trigger on a new mower and went the zero turn front deck Grasshopper.

With you having 1 ¼ acre I would say either a tractor or zero turn would be fine. I guess it all depends on if you are going to plan to do more than just cut and use it to do other stuff around your place.

What the others have posted is good info and like normal everyone has an opinion so take what you read and sit back and review and make the choice that is best for you. :)

The guy that cuts my 3 acres every week has a zero turn...I enjoy watching him use it while I am floating in my pool...lol :)

So in case anyone cares for an update I met a local dealer which I decided to purchase a zero turn from. Great reviews and a no pressure experience. They carry Ariens, Gravely and Hustler and I will probably spend some extra coin (partial finance) and go with the Gravely ZT XL 48” for $4199. The Ariens XD 52” is still in the running as well for $3099 but I think I prefer the upgraded ZT-2800 transmission that should last 10 years plus with proper maintenance.

Whatever you end up with make sure it has a Kawi motor.

I paid like $4300 for my scag liberty 52in with Kawasaki. Totally worth it. This is their “residential” mower and one step up is like $5000 and really nice. Very few complaints about Scag out there.

I'd have to disagree  A Kohler Command is a great engine, have it on my Toro Z going on 10 years. Now Kohler's Courage engine was notorious for the block cracking
