I can’t believe Ford is trying to justify this:
    https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a35742506/2021-ford-f-150-pickups-rust-reported/

“New 2021 F-150 owners are taking to the internet to complain that their brand-new trucks were shipped from the factory with heavily rusted parts, including the exhaust, differential, and wheel hubs. Ford has not explained how this could have happened, and it's unclear how many of the popular pickups are affected by the problem. A story by the Detroit Free Press highlighted the stories of some of the customers who had eagerly awaited the first 2021 F-150 pickups, only to discover rust all over their truck's axles, exhaust, wheel hubs, and other underbody parts.”

It was shipped from the factory that way and they took delivery? Did no one look under the truck before accepting it? If I ordered one and went to pick it up like that, I’d refuse it.

But the reality is that those rusty looking parts have no effect their performance. Just looks like crap.

thats awful. The bolts will rust so that doesnt surprise me, but the axle and diff? Thats 5-10 years of hard salt winters worth of rust on a brand new vehicle :monocle:

im thinking they had to have released parts into the chain which were not up to normal standards.

Same thing on the 2019s...a colleague complained to the dealership and they stated it isnt a drivetrain or paint defect...he just said okay and took the truck still...stupid 8s as stupid does...they're not cheap trucks either! Just have different standards in Mexico I guess...ha!

I guess you’re right. The last Ford I bought was a 1985 Mustang GT. It was actually a really good car. The only problem I ever had with it was the hydraulic actuator for the clutch went out. That car was driven hard too, very hard. I bought it when I was in my mid 20’s. Those were my prime hell raising years.

I think Ford is just going super cheap on the source material they're using for their trucks now.
That is ridiculous for a brand new truck to look like that. I left a set of front struts from a 2006 E55 sitting on the side of my house for a year and they didn't look like this... and they had 125k miles on them when I took them off the car.
A coworker just ordered a 2021 F-150. Trying to decide if I should tell him about this before he takes delivery or give him crap about once he tries to tell me how much better his Ford is that my Tundra.

I can’t believe ford isn’t getting crushed by the price and availability of aluminum (granted they are a big part of the increased demand)

Toyota has had this issue many times. My old 4runner was rusted to shit underneath. Didn’t the Tacoma have this issue when they are swapping out frames. Don’t make this sound like it’s never happened to Toyota.

Its pretty obvious those parts didn't receive any paint, but I'm surprised they didn't even bother to blast it with a little metal protectant, to at least make it last past sitting at the dealership lot.

How "old" was your 4runner when you noticed this rust?, we're talking about brand new trucks.

    It’s ok.
They’ll start making the frame and drivetrains out of aluminum to prevent rust.

This is what actually got me into looking at Tundras. Ive had several F150's over the years, and we're going to be trading my wifes GC overland in on a truck this summer. Seems like the main "issues" people complain about on this site are no auto down / up on the window switches and the stereos are kind of crappy. Big difference from the F150 forums... Now if Tundras were as common on dealer lots as F150's are, Id be set.

I won't say they're not cheap myself, but what's interesting is that about 10 years ago or so I could get one HELL of a deal on an F150, and.....not on a Tundra.

Meanwhile, now I can actually get a comparatively equipped Tundra *cheaper* than the same F150.

It takes decades of hard work and dedication to deliver that level of awful. You can't just wake up one day and decide to suck that bad. You have to gain the knowledge and skills to know how to get it all wrong. This level of incompetence doesn't happen by accident. It happens when you have the decades practice that can only come from people who design hot garbage in the city of Detroit.

I'm not a Ford fan boy but surface rust on a differential doesn't hurt anything, it just looks ugly. There are many other issues with Ford trucks and a rusty diff is way down on the list.

I don't think their claim is about pickups. I think it's the whole "F" series which includes F-150,250,350,450 and so on which aren't just pickups. I think if GMC/Chevy trucks would have higher numbers if they sold just one name brand. If I had to chose only between Ford and GM then I would chose hands down a GM. I've had several Ford trucks by choice and not by choice and they all sucked. I've only had one Dodge and that was because it had a Cummins. The rest of the truck was the biggest POS on wheels I'd ever owned.
