In New Zealand they farm deer antlers.

As well as deer! Fun and terrifying to be stuck in a pen with this many deer. It was my job to scare them down a corridor for pregnancy testing. Didn’t get any pictures of the bucks but they were massive since they were used for breeding, they had very large racks 565BC57E-8B9C-4339-BC6F-A3A51DE0EAFC.jpg

Cool! What did they farm them for? Meat, hunting ranches, both? Could anyone purchase them and keep as livestock or pets?

I only worked on a few farms so I Don’t know how they do everything. But they did farm for meat and antlers. They could sell their best breeding stock, I didn’t hear anything about hunting ranches though. They go out and shoot one and butcher it for themselves but wouldn’t call it hunting. I think they only consider it hunting if it was a wild animal. Not a farmed one. I’m not sure what their rules were for farming, but he did say it was expensive when they escaped. Had to bring in helicopters with tranq guns to get a herd back once. Their fences were 8 feet tall and always had electric hooked up to 13,000 volts. It would hurt like hell if you accidentally bumped it. Though, I never hit those, I ran in to several cattle ones though which were only 7000 volts. Not sure what the amps were.

edit:what a spacey drawn out post.. I shouldn’t have been posting after that much red wine..

Good choice on letting doe with fawns walk, I'll never take a doe with fawns. Need momma all season , for good growth ,and security, also at least 1 is a buck fawn.

My dad has a small ranch property in the Texas hill country. There's a high-fence whitetail breeding operation close by that has some absolute monster bucks. They sell the offspring to hunting ranches. The hunting ranches buy them to improve the antler growth genetics in their native herds.

They don't allow hunting on the breeding ranch. It's surrounded by a 16' fence topped with razor-wire. There's also a tall dirt berm just inside the fence to so people can't see or shoot in from the fence. There's only a gap in the berm for the driveway.

I'm no trophy hunter but I usually let does walk till after the rut. Keep the does around and the bucks will show. Ultimately it comes down to getting some meat for freezer though. :hungry:Good to luck to all the hunters. 20161029_072701-1.jpg 20200425_192039.jpg

My friend thought the hotwire on his cattle fence was off when he went to patch a broke section. He grabbed both ends of the broken wire to pull them together. Guess what...it wasn't off.

That would be really cool to see how they do things. But I could understand the no hunting rule. Less pressure, better breeding?
haha I have done that too. Standing in a puddle with work boots on. I provided an excellent ground.
A trick for testing to see if a wire is on is to take a piece of green grass and touch it to the top. Slowly slide the grass up the wire and if you never feel a shock, it’s off. However, you couldn’t do that if you needed to grab both ends lol

Totally agree , no does till after rut , no better buck lure than the real thing. Nothing yet either , been seeing but only smaller basket 8 , and does. Taking a few days off to let it rest just before pre-rut kicks in. Hung out 2-dripper bottles ,and smaller bucks were going nuts all around them.

Connected with a doe Monday evening. 23 yard chip shot (though been having a run of bad luck lately) 3 blade swhacker dropped her in less than 75 yards. I think the arrow went further than the deer after it passed through. It kicked off the rib and went high left never to be seen again. Brings me to 3 doe, and 1 8 point on the season.

Picked up this Matthews MQ-32 yesterday from my buddy that quit hunting for $50. I’m going to bring it to the archery shop and have them set it up for my son as his starter bow. 999033CA-0289-4D21-A32C-C55B7473FE4E.jpg

Any advice on a starter bow for my turning 6 year old? Have been looking at the Bear apprentice, spark, etc but don’t know enough to make a decision lol

Diamond archery makes great bow's for beginners that allows the bow to "grow" with you. Like huge spreads in draw length and draw weight. Good price points too. Check out the Diamond atomic for kids that age. Or if you know they will continue to shoot step up to the infinite that will support them up into their teens. My two cents

Sorry i just went straight to that bow because it was in the "hunting" section of the forum. If your kid is just gonna play around in the backyard and at a campsite then the Bear bows you were looking at would suffice. Anyone of them would work for fun...

My daughter has Diamond Infinite Edge Pro. I think they call it Prism now. 5 to 55lbs?

Yes, expensive, but damn.... she could legally hunt with it in NH after some growing....

Slick bow. Not a lot of obvious differences to my Bowtech that I paid a ton more money for.

I started with one of the Bear youth bows. Your kid will grow out of it quickly. I would second the Diamond, maybe an SB1 or Edge. Easily can use as a kid and even as an adult. I have an SB1 as my spare hunting bow.

If you're not entirely sure, go to a range and rent for a while. Make sure your kid is actually into it before investing. You should also consider getting a used bow. Just have it checked out by a shop.

I shoot my old trusty PSE Vendetta XS from 2011. 28” draw at 60 pounds. It’s been a great bow and taken a few whitetails, bears, and a pile of ruffed grouse.
