Thoughts on this system configuration?

This is my first post to the forum (outside of the introductory post), and am seeking everyone's thoughts / input. I just purchased a 2021 Limited Crewmax, and like everyone else, am not at all impressed with the JBL sound system. That brings me to where I am at now - I visited a local shop recommended by several locals, and have scheduled an install next week to pretty much replace everything except the head unit. The proposed components are below, but can change it up before my install next week. Thoughts on this configuration? I listen to literally everything, except rap / hip hop.

My only question is with the 6ch.....if you are only running two sets of components (using the passive crossovers), you really only need 4 channels. If you are running the fronts actively (and the rears passively) then you are good. If you only need 4 channels, just get a 5-ch amp to keep it simpler.

You might want to ask the shop about how much it would cost to throw some sound deadening in the doors and rear plate.

 

Looks solid. That sub should blend well but I wouldn't imagine it will be beating the block down. If you have time and are somewhat handy, you can tackle this yourself and save a BUNCH of cash. I just did my install last week and posted the thread. Not sure how much the processor is (I assume it functions as a LOC) but if it were anywhere close to the cost of a new headunit, I'd go that route.

I chose the XD400/4 to power my front components and rear coax speakers and it works great. If you want to save some cash, you could just go with coax speakers in the back. Typically rear speakers are just for fill and people either omit them completely or run coax speakers, speakers with the tweeters built in, back there. Based on my experience, I wouldn't omit the speakers in the back but the cost/reward ratio just isn't there IMO for sticking a nice component set back there.

Maybe get coax speakers and use the savings to put towards some sound deadening.

 

I like it. You have the 8ch coming out of the dsr1. Might as well use them all

 

Thanks everyone, the sound deadening is already planned and scheduled. I guess my main concern, is whether the single JL 10 sub driven by 500-600 watts would be enough, or if a 2nd one would be needed.

 

Given the genres of music you excluded, I think running one TW3 will be good. What part of AZ are you located? I’m running 2 W0 10” subs and would be happy to let you hear what that sounds like but I’m down in Pima County NW of Tucson.

Yes, I am going through Kartunes - scheduled to drop off the Tundra Wednesday morning

 

I would get a slightly bigger amp for 2 tw3 s. I would go 800w to 1000w, (but that s just me).

 

I had the tw3's in a sealed box (jl stealth box) and now tw3's in a ported.
I would go with two in a ported box.

 

Just FYI, I think there may be a known issue with the dsr1 and 2020+ tundras

 

how much does a system like OPs set up run? Factory system really stinks. But want to smart about a audio upgrade. Clueless on this matter. Will pay for somebody to install.

 

No clue to what OP is paying or how much they charge for install. I'm about $1,200 in for a new head unit, speakers, amp, sound deadening, and all of the extras. You could do it a lot cheaper but I didn't. I imagine I'll be in about $2,000 ro $2,200 by the time I add two subs, a box, and another amp. Again, it can be done for much cheaper.

 

Trust what James recommends to you. He normally asks what you want out of the upgrade and will suggest based on your answer. He is awesome at what he does

 

Thanks guys, I am looking at just north of $3k with this upgrade, excluding the sound deadening. Pricing will vary greatly based upon hardware selection and who you have do it. I have heard great things about the shop I am using, so far me, any extra costs are worth it to know it is done right.

 

Scratch the DSR 1 and get a quality aftermarket headunit. You have top quality Ferrari equipment and you’re feeding it with a civic motor from 1999.

 

The only thing I can think of are some focal speakers. You can't go wrong with these. I'm only saying it cause that's what I got.

 

Why the 6ch amp?

 

The 6 Channel amp is for both sets of doors, as well as power options for the dash speakers. I changed out the Hertz components for the Focal component kit. Thanks for everyone's input!

 

I think everyone agrees running front components AND amplified dash speakers will generally make your highs too bright. People tend to either a) pull the dash speakers completely b) keep/upgrade the dash speakers but run them off HU power or c) install front door component tweeters in dash speaker location rather than in the door.

Imo, it would be better use of the 6 channel to run active in the front channels as suggested above and either ditch the dash speakers or run them off HU power so they are very subtle.

 

Why not run a separate amp for the dash speakers so that way you can adjust the gains accordingly so the dash isn’t too bright. That’s the ideal setup. Costs a little more but would be worlds better

I don t know about anyone else, but if I had a shop do something like this I would know exactly what the plan is before I dropped off the truck, and i d get it in writing. There are some horror stories out there.

 

Nope. Do not amp-power the dash speakers as it will OVERPOWER the audio in your system. They will be WAY TOO BRIGHT. Even the engineers at Toyota saw this and chose not to amp-power the dash (Tundra OEM dash speakers are powered by the H/U only and the crap, under-seat amp powers the doors and crap sub in the back). Most of us simply delete the dash speakers and run components in the doors and subs in the back, powered by either a 5 channel amp OR, two amp setup (4chan for doors and mono for subs). The latter is how I did mine and it sounds absolutely amazing. The dash speakers are overkill anyway.

 

For what it's worth, the audio shop that OP is at is very well regarded in the local Tundra group. I'd say they know what they are doing, but we don't have all the information either.

 

You could always adjust the gain on the channel for the dash tweeters to get them to fit into the sound stage. I think it's a great idea. You just want to make sure you have enough sub there to help balance it out because that will be a lot of highs.

 

I picked up my Tundra from the local shop (KarTunes) yesterday afternoon and it sounds amazing. They used all 6 channels on the JL 600/6 to power the 2 dash speakers (turned down quite a bit), and the Focal components in all 4 doors. The JL 10TW3 sub does great for a single 10". Overall I am very happy with their recommendation and install. No problems whatsoever with the DSR1 (yet) regarding the carplay / siri / etc.... The imaging that was created through all 8 channels of the DSR1 is amazing. Thanks to those of you who chimed in. Have a great weekend!

 

After having this initial upgrade, I decided to go back in and add a 2nd JL 10" TW3. It sounds fantastic, and has plenty of high's, mid, and now bass. The imaging created by the use of all available speakers through separate channels on the amps was a good choice by the local shop.

 

First Thank you for writing this although im no longer at kartunes. a lot of you guys are not understanding I have to use the dsr1 for his factory headunit so I can ditch the factory amp as this vehicle has jbl. And I can't run the dash off the headunit . about the dash speakers. Part of the reason I wanted a 6 channel amp to run the dash separately from the doors. the dsr1 can control them independently being a dsp.
