Hey guys, I'm considering doing a power steering flush on my '04 Tundra LTD AC. I'm not sure if the fluid has been changed, so I wanted to possibly flush it along with changing some other fluids. I'm wondering if I should do the flush, even if I have a slight rack seep on the passenger's side. Also have a slight pump whine/hum, which I guess could be due to old/worn out fluid. Would introducing fresh ATF into the system via a flush cause the seep to turn into a more severe leak, or not? When I took some fluid out to put some stop leak in for kicks and giggles, I noticed some black stuff in the fluid which prompted me to consider changing the fluid. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance!

I would definitely put some fresh in if it looks dark/discolored especially since you don’t know old it is. When I bought my 02 I went ahead and did all the fluids good preventative maintenance.
I wouldn’t think it would cause your seep to be worse and even if it does leak I’d rather put fresh fluid in and fix the leak vs possibly ruining the ps pump.

Do the Suck and Fill method. Do a few over a few weeks time. Try to suck that sludge out.

I am planning on doing the PS flush in the near future (thanks for the clear tube and barbed fitting info.) Just curious how much fluid you used to flush the system thoroughly? Trying to put together a cost sheet with materials/fluid before doing it.

Prior to my flush the fluid was like a grayish charcoal color, terrible. Previous owner used regular power steering fluid as evidenced by half a bottle that came with the truck. :homer: Probably other stuff in there too, who knows?
I used far less than I thought I would to achieve the bright red Dex/Merc throughout the flush. I bought a gallon plus one qt. and still have approx 1/2 gal left over... so about 3 or 4 qts was used for my flush.

Thanks for the info! Like others on this forum, my fluid is very dark in color as well and certainly in need of attention soon.

Awesome, thanks for providing additional pictures here! PS and trans fluid change are the last fluids I need to get done, so this helps a lot.

You can do it! You'll just need an assistant to turn the wheels as you add Dex/Merc to the res. It was easy.

Also... after the flush, do a basic power steering bleed to expel any potential air in the system. I don't think there were any trapped queefs in mine but good practice to do this.

Ha ha. What did you do to bleed? Just turn wheels lock to lock with engine running?

Be advised: The lines are very stubborn removing and putting back on to the PS Res. Take your time with these, that Res is fragile (I replaced mine). I also replaced my return line which was inexpensive. The line that goes from the Res to the Rack is next.

I had just replaced my res bracket. Popped the res out and threw in a new bracket (have a build thread going). My clamps are a little rusty, but the rubber lines feel pretty good still. I’ll look harder at them when I do this job at a later date.
