What prevents the TRD supercharger from being installed and/or tuned on 2017 Tundra? Reason I ask is that I’ve got a line on a used TRD sc. I believe it came off a 13 Tundra. I have a 17 Tundra TRD Pro non FF. I’ve sourced 550cc injectors and a 340L/hr fuel pump already. Now, I just need to find someone or something to tune my truck.

I spoke to a local dyno shop today. They told me that. Also, everything I’ve read online goes from 07-15 tundras. I dont know what changed in 16.

Could that be related to the "TRD" supercharger being discontinued around that time and not related to the ability of 16+ trucks to be SC?

Pretty sure there's lots of 16+ SC tundras

I really don’t know. Every 16+ Blown tundra I’ve seen had the Magnuson sc on it. I suppose that could be a huge factor. I guess, I’ll find out more tomorrow after I call Magnuson up and see what my options are. I’ll post any updates I find.

Yes it's because magnuson stopped producing the "TRD" supercharger. They still make SC's for the Tundras but they aren't branded as TRD. You can SC a 16+, people do it all the time

I'd recommend using a different shop for install, if the thought you couldn't SC a 16+ then they probably aren't very familiar.

I’m not being told that I can’t supercharge my 17 Tundra. I’m just being told that I can’t do it with the TRD branded supercharger. Does that seem right? It definitely seems like it’s just a matter of a different tune. I’m calling Magnuson today to see if I can get some answers. Seeing how they built the TRD sc and they continue to build sc’s today.

The fit kits might be different. Mounting location of the intercooler reservoir, tab mounts of the intercooler for example. Certainly not insurmountable. I have a setup from a '16 on my '11.

    I'm pumped.
This is the single focus of any future mod I want to do with my 21 Tundra.
Magnuson told me they are currently certifying the blower for the 20 models and 21 is right behind.
Can't wait to put the 5.7 into the relm it was meant to be in.

FYI without posi only one rear drives the truck, when you’re in 4c4 one front and one rear and its the one that spins the easiest, but I’m sure you knew that

The TRD S/C will work on 07s thru 21s, the hold up on the 20s and 21s is the tuning.

To clarify the above, Magnuson used to sell the TRD S/C through Toyota. When Toyota stopped selling it under the TRD label, Magnuson continued the product which still requires a third party tune:
    https://www.magnusonsuperchargers.com/category-s/124.htm

On that note, Eaton is releasing a TVS 3100 soon. Its purported to be sold thru Mangunson and Harrop. Whether or not this version comes to the Tundra remains to be seen; so far the early version released is targeting the sports car market.

Well, I found a shop that can write a tune for the TRD supercharger for my 17 Tundra. They use HP. It’s just under $1,100 for the HP interface, software and the custom tune. They seem to have very good customer support. It’s gonna be a few weeks before I’ll have time to do the install. Work is picking up quite a bit right now. But as soon as I get it all done, I’ll post some pics and maybe some numbers as well. Oooh man! I’m getting excited just thinking about it!!!!

Nows the time to get anything else you want installed out of the way. Headers, exhaust, etc. With a custom HP Tuners tune the sky is the limit.

Lemme ask you or anyone else this: what should I do to my driveline to handle the extra power? I tow a 10,000 pound fifth wheel camper with the truck, so all that extra power is probably gonna smoke my tranny or my driveshaft.

The drivetrain is pretty beefy but I would add a valve body shift kit to reduce slip. Pretty labor intensive so any shop that drops your valve body is going to charge you a pretty penny. That plus a HP Tuners trans tune and you should be good.

10000 lb? What is the tongue weight? What’s your payload sticker say? I hope you’re just exaggerating.

Not exaggerating. It’s a “half ton towable” fifth wheel. Tongue weight is 1,200 lbs. My truck is rated for 9,600 lbs towing and a payload of 1,600 lbs. to compensate for the 400 lbs overweight towing, I upgraded the brake system to high carbon, drilled and slotted rotors with carbon fiber pads. For the near maxed out payload, I added sumo springs, rated for 2,000 lbs. I love my truck and I would never beat on it. I take really good care of it. Oil changes every 5,000 miles. Tranny service at 40,000 miles. Diff/xfer case fluid change and driveshaft lube at 50,000. I spend a lot of time and money on maintenance.

A lot of manufacturers say “half ton towable” and then there is small print that it’s on you to check it yourself. Does your door sticker say 1600 lb payload? Tundras are heavy and that seems high for a 4wd. No upgrade will ever raise your payload or towing capacity. Also those numbers sound like it’s before any people/gear/water.

Check your door sticker. Weigh your truck. Don’t go by numbers in the book. My guess is that you aren’t just a little over capacity, but way over. I just hope you don’t hurt anyone else by exceeding it that much.

I don’t want to be the towing police, but that is way too much trailer for a Tundra.

My 2017 is currently at Prospeed in Texas; I shipped it there from Florida to get tuned after I added a bunch of bolt-ons. That SC will fit but depending on how many miles are on it you may want to send it to Magnuson to get freshened up.

I’ve been down this road.... make sure they have experience with tuning Tundras. There’s 3 of them in the country that have a proven history of success.

Hopefully ID Motorsports in MD is one of them. The guy I spoke with over the phone and via email seemed very knowledgeable and confident. Might I inquire as to who you recommend for Toyota specific tuning?
