Same! Wow that mexico oil spec sheet was very revealing.

Yes I have seen the use of different weights for the same vehicles in quite a few different automotive manuals. And I do realize much of this has to do with CAFE standards. But at the same time I have seen many truck owners pushing them to the max using a 0w20 without failure or any issues for that matter. So I just don’t see going against Toyota’s recommendation of 0w20 in the US. Sure it’s safe you use...but I would want to see proof of max protection. Amsoil make excellent oil but realistically how much more protection is it going to offer over Walmart’s Super tech oil? I have the same feelings with a 0w20 vs 5w30...

Toyota DOES reccomend higher weight viscosity :

What can I say, clearly Toyota suggests a higher weight. Don’t use 0w20...but I have to point out the word “may”. Not very concise.

That is to maintain minimum kinematic viscosity under higher crankcase temperatures.

Uh, no. Words are very important. That says a higher viscosity oil MAY be used in certain situations such as high speeds or extreme loads. You need to read the page right before that one where Toyota says what it actually RECOMMENDS, which is 0W-20.

Ok but if that snippet is from a USA manual then we must factor in the 'green' lobbies and other political motivations behind it. Many decisions these days are not driven by engineering, they are pseudo-science. (How many masks are you wearing right now?... hmmmm)

My wife's XC90 also specs a huge variety of oils. For years it used to be 5W-30 in the USA, now it's 0W-20. Did someone swap out our engine?

In the end if you change the oil every 5k miles it's simply not going to matter what you run. Yet the matter will never be fully resolved, see https://bobistheoilguy.com/

You made good points, but this is a Tundra forum so leave your BS conspiracy theory crap out of the conversation. Masks during the pandemic and not pseudo-science.

    Exactamondo.

On startup, crank and rod bearings are dependent on the oil film trapped by surface tension between bearing and journal until pressurized oil arrives. Lower vis motor oil will drain more completely off bearings/journals and all other internal surfaces. Engineers used SAE 30 oil from the time automobiles were invented until a few decades ago; Are we to believe that SAE 20 is now actually better for the engines?

All this talk of higher viscosity doesn't mean jack without this: Show me an engine ran to over 200,000 or 300,000 miles on 0W-20 that has extensive wear because of the oil. You won't be able to because 0W-20 protects the engine as it is supposed to do. In fact, I would wager that you can take two Tundras from new, run one with 5W-30 and the other with 0W-20 for 300,000 miles and then tear them down and they would both look great.

I agree with Ronin73. It would be practically impossible to measure or prove that 5w30 did any better than 0w20. Simply because the engines would run just as long with either oil.

For 'most people' that's probably true.

But is the same for someone living in Alaska? Or Phoenix AX? We had a freak storm here with multiple days of freezing temperatures, close to 0F. We had a bottle of vegetable oil in our trailer and it turned into a hard mass, couldn't pour it from the bottle. My 2-stroke generator wouldn't even run, the fuel didn't flow properly. Thus I'm a big believer and matching the oil to the local climate.

Here in southwest we'll sometimes have weeks of 100F+ weather. I'm sure I could get away with 0W-20 but since Toyota has specified heavier oils for other countries I'll run a 5W-30 in the summer.

You do you. Your truck. I am not trying to convince anyone to use anything other than what Toyota recommends, and they RECOMMEND 0W-20. They say if you meet special circumstances, you MAY us a higher viscosity. So, my stance is to use what is recommended, however, if you meet the certain circumstances and you CHOOSE to run a higher viscosity, then do so. I have never argued against that. What I argue against is people coming on here telling owners to NOT run what Toyota recommends and that they are WRONG for running what Toyota recommends. That is complete is BS.

For decades now millions of cars, trucks and big SUVs have been running on 20 grade oils without ill effects. These thinner oils result in better fuel economy, more power and improved get up and go especially when we are driving shorter distances with each turn of the key. And thinner oils are on the way. It seems that the bigoted opinions on thinner oils will persist. The myriad of SAE papers, historical data, and independent testing just cannot change the biased thinking of otherwise intelligent people.

Point being? I will run 0W-20 as Toyota recommends. And when my truck hits 300,000 miles and beyond, it will be in just as good a shape as yours having ran 5W-30. So what did it matter in the end? Well, I MAY have inched out a tiny bit better MPG and I'll take that.

There are a couple of million mile Tundras out there, anyone know what oil they ran?

I have never reccomended people not use 0w20. The "may use higher viscosity " snippet was in answer to Oey12's comment that Toyota does not reccomend higher viscosity for heavy duty use.... they DO.

The two tundras with documented million miles have 4.7L 2UZ-FE engines. The engine is spec'd for 5w30 oil

I never mentioned anything about heavy duty use...I mentioned maximum protection. Secondly Toyota doesn’t clarify what higher viscosity entails. Does that mean a 10w40?...do not really know from their statement. And again going back to the word “may”...Toyota isn’t even sure if there are benefits otherwise they would have used the word should or even recommended under those circumstances.

"PUSHING THEM TO THE MAX" sounds like heavy duty use to me, but apologies if you really meant "max protection", Guess my "americanese" could use some work.

For reference, both my 2018 Tundra and 2013 LX570 use 0w20 but that does not change to fact that 5w30 is also reccomended for the rest of the world and a heavier viscosity is ok to use by toyota in the USA

Good on ya Nick. Thats an impressively clean Valve Cover.

Wished I had used the Mobil1 Synthetic from the beginning, but ended up using ‘whatever’ the garage had. My VC had the yellowing and a few dark areas around the cams (oil changed at 5k always).

Since taking over maintenance a few years ago I switched to Mobil1 5w-30 Synthetic High Mileage and it will be interesting to see how the Cams clean up if at all on the next VC Job. Pics at 158k miles.

I actually used Rotella 5W-30 this last weekend's oil change. So far so good. Runs smooth. Sounds good. Gas mileage may have even increased, but definitely not worse.

I've run Rotella in my diesels and Subaru WRX. It was highly recommend for both and worked great for me so I'll be using that.

Having said that, I belive all of the certified oils are good and will take your vehicles to 500k miles if changed in normal intervals.

This reminds me if the treads on the chainsaw forums about 2 stroke and bar oils, they start but never end well, Hahaha.

I literally just called the dealership I frequent and was told that it’s the same exact oil. I was speaking with the parts manager and he told me to come in, ask for him, and he will show me the data sheet on the bulk oil which is EXACTLY the same as the bottled TGMO. I was surprised... I called another dealership just for giggles and sure as heck same thing and I asked if I could see the data sheet (no problem at all..). So maybe Toyota bulk isn’t as bad as assumed.

If I were you, I would claim those opportunities. In fact, have them make copies so you can post here, and we can all believe. Sometimes, talking with dealers is like playing poker. They're betting you're not going to go to the trouble. I say...CALL THEIR BLUFF!

I'm betting when you actually show up, they'll say something like, "Toyota oil? Aw, naw, I thought you wuz asking if our bulk oil was 10W40."
