Those insurance prices are set by the insurance industry, not the glass shops. Cash price is almost always cheaper, in any buying situation usually.

If your vehicle came with a laminated part, then you should definitely go back with it. It plays a very important roll in side curtain, dash air bag deployment. The glass company is actually putting themselves in a liability position if the customer has an accident and the air bags deploy but don’t function properly because they installed the “incorrect part”.

P.S. ALL windshields are laminated parts, some door glasses come laminated now also, they refer to laminated door glasses as “theft resistant” or “theft proof”. Ever seen someone try and bust a side glass out that was laminated? They gonna work to get into your vehicle that way! LOL

I understand that. However, there’s no excuse for it. It’s just another gouging process much like our broken health care system.

Longer list than the wife needs to know about....
I agree, just because the system is the way it is doesn't' mean it right... same could be applied to your home mortgage. If you think you have a 2.5% rate for 30 years do the math for year one... how much interest did you pay? *hint its more than 2.5%.
Business is the way it is knowing how it works gives you the ability to make educated decisions. Getting upset about it only serves a purpose if you are in a position (or dedicate yourself) to make a change to the system.
Most people are are not or will not.

I've read that some upmarket vehicles come with the laminated side glass for wind/road noise reduction purposes as well...

I had Safelite replace the windshield on my 2018 last week. There is some type of problem with their windshield, as now my camera can't be recalibrated. They stated that their equipment was showing error codes with the camera that only Toyota could clear. So I took it to Toyota, they told me the camera works fine, the windshield is the problem. So now I've got an OEM windshield on the way that Safelite will be installing for me. In the meantime, I'm stuck driving a truck with no LDA, PCS, or radar and a dashboard full of error messages that can't be cleared. Safelite has been sort of a pain about this, not calling me back when they said they would. I've had to stay on them. Needless to say, I'll never go back to Safelite to have a windshield replaced ever again.

I’d cancel and find better glass. They use cheap Chinese glass.

I might do that. It’s where my insurance sent me to. I wonder what options I have? Any suggestions!

Safelite did an outstanding job on my replacement 2 years ago. The Original Windshield was sand blasted to the point of not being able to see well in certain angles of the sun.

They used the Fuyao Glass which was around $300 installed in my driveway. Installer was an award winner and was contentious. The OEM Glass was $900 if I had choose. So far so good 2 years later. No noise or squeaks/leaks.

Next door neighbor had them come out last year. Different installer got caught in a torrential wind/rain storm that blew in. The glass was off and rain flooded the computer/ECM totaling the vehicle. Dude was unprepared even though rain was expected.

Its usually all about the installer doing the proper work.

That Fuayo glass is straight out of China.
I have found very few things that come out of China that I consider to be quality.
I am happy you had a good experience though.

Insurance always pushes that because they contract with them for dirt cheap prices BUT you as the consumer have the legal right to go wherever you want.
If you’re going through insurance then you should absolutely get the best glass you can. I believe you can tell Safelite you want Toyota glass and they can source it and install. Or call around and ask a few companies what your options are. I’ve had good luck with Pilkington auto glass. They are a large Japanese glass manufacturer.

Thanks! I’ll look into it. Of course, I’m not too impressed with Toyota glass either. This will be my second replacement. The first was done at the dealer, and was Toyota glass. It lasted about 6 months. I should note that I have a Tacoma, so not sure if they just have crappy glass to begin with....

It's probably influenced somewhat by what's available in any particular region.

No regrets going with the Pilkington. Great quality, clarity, fitment, & the Siglasol series glass really helps with regulating the interior temperature.

So, my 6 month old 2021 Tundra just got a killer of a smash on the top edge of the windshield and I need some advice.

My current OEM windshield is a Vitro which if my research is correct is a PGW windshield as they recently changed names.

I can claim this replacement on my insurance and get an OEM windshield valued at 1232.53 for my deductible of 500 dollars, would be covered under comprehensive and would not effect my rate.
I can get an OEE Pilkington for 482.89 cents and not use insurance.

I am a bit conflicted because it seems PGW is just meh quality even though its OEM, it seems that Pilkington is good stuff, should I roll the dice on getting the Pilkington and potentially better windshield then OEM or just stick to what I know and go the OEM route.

i bought used 2022 TUNDRA and came with cracked windshield. currently there is a backlog on this for 350+ shields. so even after 2 months, i still have no luck getting my. dealer keeps saying you will get OEM but no ETA as when I will get it. so yes i agree if you can get Pilkington then go for it.. I might do the same and put some pressure on Dealer to replace it sooner
