First of all newbie in towing. Ive tried looking for info on this but came up still not finding what I need. Looking for the correct size hitch mount for my truck and a ball. Heres my deal:

I have a +2 c/b shackle and riding on 295/70/18 (not sure what drop to buy)
Will mostly be borrowing a trailer that is 10x6. I will use it from time to time with various weights.
In the future, I may actually buy a trailer; probably bigger so I can put my old mustang on it.
I really just want to buy a hitch mount and ball. What weight and size should I be looking at?
    Thanks

It’s really going to depend on the trailer you are pulling. They all sit at different heights and usually require either a 2” or 2 5/16” ball.

I use one of these. Costs a little more but then i have one hitch that can do it all. There are cheaper ones out there that are similar but I’d highly recommend an anti-rattle hitch if you are going adjustable.

Thanks. I thought about trailer size difference
Maybe I’ll stick with something for now just for the small trailer. Maybe a 4” drop?

You will have to manually measure your drop, you can't arbitrarily pick a number like 4" and expect it to work.

Once you have the measurement, it doesn't need adjusting if you are towing the same trailer. I have a Heavy Duty adjustable hitch, so it can be adjusted if I swap vehicles (which I have) or tow a trailer with a different height.

Depends on height and tongue weight of what you’re towing.

Great info. Thanks for the video. Since I have the trailer I can do some simple measuring.

I have the weigh safe it's rated at 10,000# and I can adjust it for every trailer I pull. I got bored and polished it a little one day but here's a picture. :anonymous:PXL_20210125_140927260.jpg

I use my drop hitch to pull 3 different trailers all the time a 22' car trailer that weights 3,400 lbs empty a 20' ski boat around 5,000lbs and a 6'x12' landscape trailer. Every trailer is a little different and being able to adjust to make each one level is a great benefit to an adjustable hitch. I don't want to haul around 3 different hitches.

Just curious, have you weighed a trailer on the scales to get your tongue weight? How does it compare to the tongue weight gauge in the hitch?

I haven't. The one I have doesn't have the gage in it.

I went with the Med 5" drop, 5.5" rise. Worked out perfect for my setup.
