    Hey all,

Spring looks like it's about to come and I think the engine bay is in need of cleaning. Has anybody cleaned their engine bay before? And what steps did you take?

I never had an issue just spraying it down at the car wash, but I’m not a detailer.

I was thinking of just opening it up and spraying it as well. Not sure if anything needs to be covered...

I spray the dirty areas with Engine Gunk Cleaner, let it sit for 5 minutes and then spray it off. I try to avoid heavy water stream and stay away from the wires as much as possible. I never do this process unless its completely cooled off and have never had an issue.

I throw a couple of buckets of soapy water in there when it's completely cool, then rinse it all off, then dry off a lot of it before starting it up.

Looks like the both of you guys let the engine cool before spraying it down... not a good idea to spray it while warm?

I sprayed gunk foamy engine cleaner over my entire engine bay while it was completely cool, just covered my fuse box and SPod. let it sit and sprayed it off with a shower nozzle. went for a drive to evaporate all the water. Never had any issues. the gunk cleaner really works great!

Guys I wouldn't just cut loose with a hose in there. Lots of electronic parts that don't really need water. Now, if you are careful with the hose then it can be used but I don't typically do that. If you have access to compressed air, that's one of the safest ways to blow away dirt. Just agitate it with something like a toothbrush.

I have always used a yard sprayer like you would use to spray plants or whatever, I mix 1 part purple bottle super clean degreaser and 2 part water. water down the engine bay, spray the mixture on it, let sit for a few min and spray off. Also do this on my wheel wells. Real dirty areas may need a little scrub to agitate

I think the cleaner is able to soak in and break loose the dirt a lot better when the surfaces are cool. The heat can evaporate the cleaner and water you spray to quickly to get the job done.

No. In fact I usually do it in the morning before ever starting the truck so it's completely cold when I do it. An as @FirstGenVol mentioned, I don't directly go fire hose on anything electric.
