So as description says, I've got a problem. My 2008 4x4 will only shift up to 4th gear. CEL and all other lights going crazy. I hooked my scanner to it and retrieved 1 code P0983 Trans solenoid S4 high resistance.
Before I used my brain, I replaced shift solenoid S4 ($300 wasted) and it ran good for about 5minutes then CEL back on and no shift into 5th or 6th gear. So I used scanner to manually apply solenoid while I'm under truck listening for click of solenoid (like I should have done before giving Toyota $300). They all click like they should which tells me ECM and wiring are good. (No open circuits at least) after searching internet I found a schematic with S4 wire running to ECM. Performed ohm test and results were .3ohms resistance. All connections are good and clean. No work has been done on truck prior but I think I either have an possible pin connector not making good contact or possible wire chafting but would like to know what others might suggest.

    Thanks

Sometimes, going to a transmission shop for diagnostics is the best idea after you have ran out of your own sources (before spending a grip of money).

They told me they don't work on internals of these transmissions. If its a problem then just like the Ship...they remove and replace trans.
I'd much rather find the problem and fix the problem because if its electrical then replacing the transmission won't fix a thing unless it was an internal electrical problem and I've already ruled that out.

Yes. I told them what was going on, they told me they would replace the transmission before replacing any part in it. After some nights of thought, I removed the plastic cover over the ECM drivetrain harness and routed wires to where it would not be dangling by its weight. Relearn Transmission and shes been running good every since.

    **quick note for future reference.**

When you relearn transmission cycle key twice. I only did once then drove 15min as prompted but that was the worst my truck has ever ran. Had me seriously thinking my transmission really have issues. So cut truck off and back on then it ran like the scaled ape I purchased 7years ago and has been going all day strong even in rough terrain.

Ended up swapping transmission out for a $1000 out of a wrecked one. I still have my old transmission just haven't torn it apart to check valve body and clutches.
Transmission replacement took me 9hrs the 1st time by myself.

What is your maintenance schedule on your transmission? Miles?

Trans harness runs straight from ECM to trans. So no wires close.
I didn't perform any maintenance to my transmission except drive it like I stole it. Considering my problem started in 4th and when I'm flying on the interstate the passing gear is 4th. So at 216k miles and my driving...if your anything like me just put another trans in it and keep tje fluid changed at least every 80k miles.

Keep me posted. I did the same and mine ran good for 2 weeks then back to huckin and buckin... I just got done putting the transmission back in for the 2nd time. 1st time I swapped my bad 1 for a known good one and just to be cautious I replaced the pump shaft seal. Got it all back together only to notice transmission fluid leaking from bell housing. So...yelp...I had to pull transmission back out only to find out that Autozone sold me two rear seals and the OD of the input seal and output seal are the same...but the ID of the output seal is larger. After finally purchasing the correct seal off RockAuto...I'll fire her up in the morning, Get fluid up to temp and top off level then Im FINALLY BACK ON THE ROAD. :bananadance::bananadance::bananadance::dancingbacon::mudding:

Jb, my '10 is throwing the same code. I check the solenoid per Toyota specs and with my meter on 200ohms it's either zero resistance or more then 200. Didn't check with other scales as either way the solenoid/internal connector/harness has a problem. So I ordered the S4 solenoid today and wonder if you had to drop the valve body to replace the solenoid? Hoping not so I dont have to deal with losing springs and such.

    Thanks

Mopar, What did you find? I saw a YouTube video (not certain if the same transmission) that looked like you don’t meet to drop the Valve Body. I’m considering whether this is something I’m willing to tackle. Just dropped the code today (Christmas Day) and failed to go above 4th gear.

I just replaced my 07 transmission. Like you said, they don't typically rebuild these because it's not much more money to just get a new one. And they also told me that the Gen 2 trannys have serious rust issues (not sure if this is true or just BS to sell me a new tranny). Mine was so jacked (so they said) that I had to get a new one. Hope you can repair yours. Mine was $7900.

I think I'm beyond livid. Bastards definitely screwed me over. I am in the process of taking this absolute bullshit to the owner. We'll see what, if anything, happens.

I had the Torque Convertor on my 2008 5.7L 4WD transmission replaced at about 300K miles (2.5 years ago). Original price was $1400, but I had them do the Main Rear Seal for another $300 since it had been leaking (for a few months already) and that alone was estimated at $1300. So, I'm a fan of small (recommended) transmission shops in lieu of a replacement (if possible) by the dealer. I'll be holding my breath when they look at this (still reluctant to play with the transmission on my own). One down side for me, the local recommended shop is closed for the holidays & a family medical situation until Jan 6th. The truck is our spare vehicle, so the inconvenience/risk isn't too bad.

Sorry for the late reply. It's quite simple to replace the solenoid. You don't have to drop the valvebody. I also replaced the harness which requires removing the filter/screen which does make a mess. Just make sure you have torque wrench that goes to correct value. I have a 1/4" ratchet that did, but the problem is it was difficult to detect the "break" so I bought a screwdriver style torque wrench to get a better feel for the break. I replaced the gasket and knowing what I know now I wouldn't have as it's a pain to keep it in place where as the original stayed where it was because of indentations.

I have a cousin that is a Toyota tech so he pulled them off Techstream for me. Replacing any of the solenoids is easy as I did my repair on my dirt driveway. Not ideal but I didn't have any problem.

I replaced the #4 shift solenoid on mine and problem went away for about a year. A few months ago the problem would come back for a few days then clear itself. Sometimes I would lose 1st and 2nd gear but have 5th and 6th. When I refilled tranny last year I didnt have enough fluid at time to completely fill it and I planned to get more fluid from my cousin and forgot about it. Havent had the problem in a couple months now, but I'm pretty sure it's due to not having enough oil in tranny.

Replacing the s4 solenoid fixed my problem.

I had a problem a couple months ago where I would either lose 5rh &6th gear or 1st and 2nd. After a couple days they would clear themselves and I'm 99% positive it's because I dont have enough fluid in it. I didnt have enough to fill it last year and never remembered to get more from my cousin, but truck went about a year before it started acting up. Still havent put more fluid in it, but it hasnt acted up in well over a month.

If I had to do it again I would just buy an aftermarket solenoid, but if you buy factory part make sure it's the S4 solenoid and is BLUE. There is a lot of confusion on which solenoid is which, but I found another post that laid it out correctly. My cousins parts dept ordered wrong one at 1st and tried to stick me with a $400 solenoid. I told them it was there fault for not ordering the right one and they can call Toyota and bitch at them because the parts fiche sucks.

I am having the same issues and got diagnosed as the P0983 Shift Solenoid "D" Control Circuit High Valve S4. Sometimes it work fine and other days it will not shift into 5th and 6th gear. Do you have the part number and where did you buy it from? You mentioned it was a used part. Did you buy it from a junkyard? How much did you pay for it?
