First post here! I just bought a 2004 Tundra Limited 4WD with 133,000 miles and am giving it a bit of a refresh. I want to remove the fuel injectors and send them out for cleaning and have not found an answer to my question - must I remove the entire intake manifold to get the injectors out, or can I remove the fuel rails and pull the injectors out, leaving the manifold attached.

From looking at it the fuel lines would have to be disconnected of course, then there are four 12mm bolts holding down the fuel rails. In other cars I have removed similar bolts and then wiggled and pulled up and the injectors come out. There are some wires and vacuum hoses in the way, those would have to be moved aside or removed, and there is a metal fuel line that crosses the front of the engine that may have to be removed.

    What do you think?

There should be a Toyota technical service manual copy you can search for on the internet that can tell you. I was able to download mine from the Toyota TIS website for a $10 day subscription. The only downside is that I had to download several hundred sections individually so it took me a few hours.

I’ve drawn up a diagram of what I did without removing the Manifold.

Just be careful to not lose the Banjo Bolt washers. Also, I considered having my Injectors cleaned but ended up buying the 12 Hole Denso Injectors (Reman’d) from Dirty Deeds. They were cost effective in that they only cost a little more than a cleaning of the old ones at a professional shop (2 day turn around). Not only are they a performance enhancement, they are shipped and ready and the upgrade done in about 4-5 hours by a rookie never having done them before.

I have done this both ways with removing the intake and just lifting the rail.

I recommend removing the intake. Because it is easier to install everything out of the truck and just drop the intake in. The driver side is a pain in the ass because all the vacuum lines that don’t fold back or easily tuck away. I tried to get them seated and I ended up seating one incorrectly and that could have caused a fire.

there is a video on YouTube with a Lexus 4.7 and he is changing a starter but explains the tear down easily. Will find and post.

You will need to buy 4 fuel crush washers and a intake gasket from the dealer. Cleaning service should provide new o rings and Isolator grommets. Make sure you remove the old grommets

Thanks to everyone, I appreciate the help. Not sure which way I will go, still gathering information and trying to finish the other 20 jobs I have started on the truck!

I just replaced the injectors recently on my 05. Did not remove intake. Don't see any reason to, removing the rails only was easy enough. Few connectors and hoses to remove is all.

OK I am still going back and forth, so far I have found some videos on Manifold Removal, most of them are to get to the secondary air injection pump or starter. I have not seen anyone pull out the injectors. My only experience is with BMW 6 and 8 cylinder engines, sometimes the injectors can be really stuck! Also lifting out the rail with the injectors attached would require leaning way over, not much leverage as @jerryallday found, thus leaning toward pulling the manifold. Also putting them back in, 4 at once, does seem problematic without wiggle room and a good view of each seat.

eBay has complete rail/injectors for Tundra for sale, the picture attached lets me believe it is possible to remove both sides together. I would feel like a real Ninja if I could do that!

@professional-hand-model I read your build thread, wow!! A real treasure trove of Tundra repairs and upgrades. Kind of dangerous for me to read, sometimes I do get carried away. I copied your pictures with instructions/notations.

I will also linked the manifold removal videos I found. It remains curious to me there are no videos of anyone removing the fuel injectors or replacing them.

You don't need to remove the manifold. It's about 45 minutes from start to finish and IMO do what @Professional Hand Model said and upgrade the injectors to the dirty deeds 12 hole injectors, it's worth the extra few bucks

Yeah Bob. The Injector Upgrade was one of my first projects. Its pretty easy if you take your time. The fuel rail slips right out towards the front. Is it tight? Yeah, but with the proper Hand Jujitsu Technique and the right set of Gloves you can do it.

Start in the Pass Side first as its the easiest side. I started on the hard side and didn’t realize until finishing the job. Like Hoopty says you should do it. He put his on last year and his feedback is similar to mine. Better shifting and smoother engine. Unsure about HP, but it does feel torquier. MPG stays the same. Thanks for the kind words.

Thanks everyone for all of the insights, I got all of the injectors out without removing the intake manifold. It was way easier than I had thought. I have experience with injectors being really stuck in the manifold, these came out with very little effort.

    Steps were as follows:

    Remove air intake plenum
Remove AC line bracket from manifold/throttle body
Compressed air and vacuum to get all dirt out of area, off of tubes and harness, especially down where the injectors attach to the manifold
Remove 17mm banjo bolts holding the front fuel rail crossover tube
Remove 10mm bracket bolt under throttle body to allow crossover tube to flop down out of the way
    Plastic bag on ends

    Passenger side:
Remove blue injector wiring connector, long needle nose pliers to pinch tab, then wiggle off
Remove 10mm bolts holding the wiring harness
Zip-tie harness toward fender so it doesn't flop in your field and dump dirt into the open fuel rail connectors
Remove 10mm bolts (3 I think) on the brackets behind the manifold holding the rear fuel rail crossover
Remove 10mm bolts holding the passenger side fuel line/pulsator diaphragm down, thus removing the fuel line from the fuel rail
Flip up fuel crossover tube up out of the way, plastic bag
Remove 12mm bolts holding the fuel rail down
Gently wiggle fuel rail straight up

    Driver side:
Remove blue injector wiring connector, long needle nose pliers to pinch tab, then wiggle off
10mm remove evap purge valve from manifold
    Remove PCV hose
Remove 10mm bolts and release zip-tie type hold downs from their brackets to release the wiring harness
Zip-tie harness toward fender so it doesn't flop in your field and dump dirt into the open fuel rail connectors
22mm open end remove fuel line/fuel pulsator from fuel rail, cover end with plastic bag
Climb up into engine compartment and gently wiggle/pull up. There was a little manipulating once the rail/injector complex was free to get it out past the obstacles, but not bad at all

Well since you asked, I would call it inverted half-happy baby! I was a happy baby when the injectors all came out so easily:)

On another note, how do I tag another user in my posts? Something like instagram I assume, @BobTTundra?

I got the fuel injectors out and sent them to RC Fuel Injection in Torrance, CA for cleaning. I have sent them injectors in the past, the cars then ran incredibly well and smooth afterwards. They usually have a 1 day turnaround and charge $25 per injector.

After 133k miles mine were in bad shape, with pattern between fair and dripping, with flow between 117 to 243 cc/min. Not balanced at all! Now they are all at 249-251 cc/min with excellent pattern. I can't wait to feel the power!

I got the cleaned injectors in, the re-install was nearly effortless. The system is definitely designed to facilitate injector servicing without removing the manifold.

The truck runs so much better! Very happy with the results, thanks again everyone for the help.
