I'm in the process of replacing all of the stereo components in my 2002 Access Cab. I got an Alpine ILX-W650 receiver and have ordered the Alpine KTA-450 Power Pack Amp.

I planned to get the Alpine S-S65C Component speakers for the front doors and the S-S65 speakers for the rear doors. Both the Best Buy and Crutchfield websites say that these will fit.

A Best Buy tech I spoke with suggested it wasn't worth getting component speakers for the front doors and recommended just putting the S-S65 speakers in the front also and disconnecting the factory tweeters ( which I'm not sure even work anymore). Does anyone think the separate tweeters make a big difference? It nets out to about $160 more to do the composite speakers up front. I'm fine replacing them but if it really won't be noticeable I could save some money.

Even though both the Best Buy and Crutchfield websites say that the S-S65 speakers will fit in the rear doors, a Crutchfield tech told me that they will not fit in the rear doors (will stick out too far to fit the rear doors). They recommended the smaller S-S50 speakers instead. I guess I should follow their recommendations and go with smaller speakers in the rear?

I've not had any issue with coaxial speakers not fitting the rear doors, but on some the tweeter might stick out farther than others. As far as components in the front, don't listen to the Best Buy clowns. Component speakers of good quality will outperform coaxial speakers of same quality. The sound staging difference alone is worth it. You can re-use the factory tweeter location or improve it by placing the tweeters more in line with the listener. High frequencies are very directional so tweeters benefit more from proper placement than any other speaker.

I disagree with the Best Buy advice. I think one of the biggest improvements one can make with a car stereo is to aim separate tweeters towards the ears.

As said above, high frequencies are very directional and they won't be heard well if pointed at your shins. Low frequencies are far less directional and can be put under seats. Mid-range are in between and work well low in the doors.

As for testing your stock tweeters, it's pretty easy: turn on some music and put your ear on the tweeter grill. You'll hear the music but it may be quiet and you'll wonder how it makes a difference but it does.

I assume you're going through this to improve sound quality. If that's not important to you coaxials will be fine. It's all about what you're hoping to achieve.

I have an Alpine head unit and the Alpine power pack with Kenwood Component speakers in the front door. The component speakers are worth the extra money.

Thanks for the replies! It sounds like components in the front are worth it so I will go with separate tweeters up front. When I put my ear to the factory tweeters, I can hear slight noise but I can't tell it is necessarily matching the song playing. I doubt I would know the song if that was all I heard.

I might do some more research on the rear speakers. I may play it safe and get the smaller ones that the crutchfield tech recommended.

Thanks! I just tested and heard both so I guess my factory tweeters still work.

I went with a component setup. Couldn’t he happier, and it makes a huge difference to get those highs up by your ears. It sounds so much more crisp.

I bought these last summer. 100.00 and could not ask for any better. Still surprised I could get this sound quality from a set that was not expensive.
I dont think any door speakers could sound better in my truck. Even spending more money.

Did the tweeters fit in the factory door location?

Yes, and was an easy install.
From what I remember the old tweeters where in a round mounting bracket. I kept these brackets / holders ( like a round cup) to push the new
tweeters into. Fit great. Think I notched out just a little bit of plastic for the wires going out the back. Was easy to look at and figure out.
