My aftermarket bumpers have all been powder coated, my DeMello is powder coated. I have always been a fan of that

Cost me 450 plus tax, so almost $500, but that's Jersey prices....

Road Armor called me back today and said they would do whatever makes me happy. I told them I took it to the body shop this morning to get coated and they said to send them the bill and we could work something out.

So far Road Armor build quality is as mentioned above a 10 out of 10 and for me that is huge. The shipping time and packaging was excellent and the customer service seems top notch as well .6B634A60-BDCE-4066-9CA4-90850B1C1550.jpg

I like their shipping box, it's the size of a coffin. My recycling guy wouldn't even take it unless I cut it up.

Is there a gap in the rear of the BSM and do only 2 of the 3 holes match up for the metal backing plate

No they all match up pretty well, not much gap at all.

Finally got mine to line up but the unit itself is much smaller than the hole so you see a lot of daylight.

    Two problems so far :

‘BSM doesn’t work at all when I got in truck
Trailer wiring harness is about 24” short B91D2C6F-0E43-4350-881F-9534909E8F16.jpg

Your BSMs look a little smaller than motors. Might want to look online to see if they’re the same part number, 2016 and 2020

Yes my bsm fit perfectly for the space, the 2020 bsm might be smaller

So I bought some 16 gauge steel cut 2 pieces 6” x 7” , sprayed with Linex and mounted them behind the units to hide the gap somewhat

confusing part is the welded in bracket for the BSM has the cutout for the plug at the 3 o’clock position instead of pointing down like the factory one. So to use their holes and point the BSM modules downward that created more of a gap.

have to address those issues and tap into license plate lights and run wiring for my Rigid flood lights

I think a huge problem with the BSM not working is the welded in brackets unless you guys rotated your BSM’s 45 degrees so the plug in was facing the rear of the truck.F0CA8464-379C-411E-B473-5F753A4DC97B.jpg

@dittothat To address an earlier question the 2016s and 2020s sensors are not the same part number.

New more capable sensors where adopted in late 2017 for the 2018+ models. Toyota TIS has the technical documents listed as two separate groups where 2018-2020 is in its own batch.

Mine are working but they are way out of whack. Trees on the side of the road are setting them off but on the highway they are kind of close .... cars are setting the off when they reach the rear tires. I don’t have a clue how those things radar works.

I am a bit concerned because I raised some cane and all of a sudden there aren’t any BSM bumpers listed on their website.

I have waited two days for “their” engineer but each day he has been busy so frustrated because I was a big proponent of them in that other thread.

I'm guessing they have to resign the brackets to accommodate the new sensors....

Like my post said look at their website they have removed all bumpers with BSM and even removed the word Sensors so I will keep you posted on the remedy they come up with for me but until them I can’t recommend them.

Not a good sign. I genuinely tried to warn you, despite your disagreement with me I sincerely hope the company remedies the situation for you. Companies shouldn't use customers to beta test products for them without full disclosure and without customer consent.

As for your next bumper it should support and consider these three main uses cases at the minimum:
    • Installation(Fitment)/Repair(Replacement)
    • Calibration
    • Operation - A subset of Operation would include the appropriate environmental protections of the sensor and connector to include vibration protection
Even if they fabricated a new mount for you they've already demonstrated they didn't consider any of the above. Not a sign of good design or craftsmanship.

From what you described the sensors are behaving that way because they are 90 degrees off axis from their intended orientation. So instead of being wide and short the radar is tall and skinny. The first picture will clarify this.

The BSM radar operation is performing four types of detection:
    • Detect Object Speed - Uses Doppler effect to determine object's speed
    • Detect Object Range - encodes the radar signal to determine how long it takes for the signal's echo to return from the target object
    • Detect Object Angle - uses a form of phase detection (similar to triangulation in some ways) to measure angle by comparing multiple measuring point.
    • Target Classification - (uses aspect of all three) + Toyota's onboard speed sensors. This is where the sensor rejects smaller object like motorcycles below a certain size or stationary objects like trees and parked cars.
According to the Toyota Technical Information Service the new sensor is covering a Horizontal angle 150 degree arc Vert angle 20 degree arc out to 164ft

    upload_2021-2-26_0-38-28.jpg

It should support detection in roughly these areas, if not the vehicle is out of spec:
    upload_2021-2-26_0-43-32.jpg

    upload_2021-2-26_0-43-59.jpg
    upload_2021-2-26_0-44-18.jpg

    upload_2021-2-26_0-52-11.jpg

    upload_2021-2-26_0-52-43.jpg
I added additional files to support the community's understanding of what these sensors do and how they do it.

The "manual" document is one of several documents Continental filed with the FCC regarding addressing the older sensor. It gives a consumer grade overview of what the radar is doing.
Continental requested protection for their intellectual property and was allowed to omit more detailed technical documents regarding how the sensor actually works (Block diagrams, theory of operation, schematics). The Infineon presentation is a close representation of what this sensor does. There are some great videos on Youtube that do a deep dive into into 24Ghz continuous wave radars or radars in general.

@Rbohno They should be in the OEM position with the plug down, so it looks like you already have them in the correct orientation.

Apologies I misunderstood you and thought you ended up mounting them plug to the rear as the bumper currently only allows.

The sensor definitely needs to be oriented a certain way; the first tech manual picture gives a general idea of the flat cone it projects.

    Hey Guys

I need one of the moderators to pm me or email me rb@Rmkindustries.com. Road Armor just contacted me and are giving a full refund on the bumper and want to make it right.

‘They want to sponsor the forum and have some giveaways. They wanted to do whatever was right for me. They took the BSM bumper off the website till they do some more testing.

‘Their build quality is as mentioned before is a 12 on a scale of 1 to 10 so moderators please contact me so we can share info with the marketing director from them.

That is good news. They are a reputable bumper company. No one should judge them by a one off design. It looks like their Tacoma offering is designed correctly but I haven't done a deep dive into its design.
