I run the Yeti 1000 in mine. I will do a panel when I can get off the grid for longer periods of time. Right now I pretty much camp and move daily so I don’t need more than the days worth of charging.

Do you thing just getting a Jackery or Yeti 1000 with solar panels will work for you to a week camping trip?
Would prefer not to have a permanent solution because it is my daily driver and don't want theft.

It really depends on a lot of things. Ambient temps, cover/no cover, size of fridge, items your charging etc.

I get about 2-3 days on my fridge which is a 75DZ in fridge only mode and not charging other items. So you would most likely have to charge it.

I’ll never go back to a ice chest now. Love having a fridge. Been in 3 trips since that are 4 days to Mojave and Death Valley that really shows the benefit. My first 2 trips my ice was melted on the 2nd day but still cold. I no longer have to worry about food getting soaked with zip lock bags leaking. Temp is always constant and so much more free space without ice!

I’m leaving each day and at a new camp site each night. No solar but have a DIY dual battery setup using Blue Sea ACR and PC1200 battery. 2nd battery is always good to go. Spent no where near 3k. I did however wait for sales. Got my Dometic CFX65 with REI’s 20% off sale and shopped around for sales for my dual battery parts.

Another unexpected benefit is having a fridge when you go shopping when you are not even camping. No more rushing back home after getting groceries.

My truck is a daily driver so I pull all my stuff off of it until we go out. As for the rain I live in San Diego so I don't worry about too much rain. I asked on other forums and quite a few leave it exposed with no problems. If there was a torrential down pour and I was out I would probably put it inside. If it was a small shower I wouldn't worry about it. *** I'm not making any claims that it's water proof, just that with the amount of ran we see that I'm comfortable with the risk.****

Due to COVID, my wife and I were discussing getting a deep freezer to keep more frozen food on-hand incase of shortages. I started looking into prices then I had a thought that why don't we just use the Dometic. Anyway it's plugged into the garage and we are using it for ancillary frozen storage.

Sticking to the cigarette adapter it came with for now.

Thinking of direct wiring to my trigger controller and/or just getting a goal zero yeti 500x.

Yes. As long as you top up charge with a solar panel or running your truck with it plugged in to charge, that’ll work.

I bought a Dometic CFX3 55L. About the size of a normal ice chest but never needs ice. Twice as much room for food and beverages for at least a week and no soggy food.

Bought a Dometic CFX3 45 here a while back and have been loving not having to deal with ice ever since! Powered off a Goal Zero Yeti 500X which is charged by cigarette port or solar. Installed and secured on a platform I built and had bedlined.

It’s DIY that I came up with by copying some ideas from SDHQ. Bought SDHQ washer relocation bottle also.

@Levidale08 , @smslavin , @Grendel are any of you running your fridge simply off solar 24/7? I recently got my freebie waeco going and now looking to put it in my bed permanently.. at least from April-October (we go to the beach almost every day and would be a nice-to-have). Like grendel I’m from SD do get a good amount of sun. Truck lives outside and plan is to have it under the tonneau hooked up to a stand alone diy 48ah with charge controller. Planning on running a 160w panel on my tracrack above the tonneau (can add another 100w I could place in the windshield if needed). Only issue I can think of is the tonneau is black and it might get toasty in there and make the fridge/freezer kick on more than I’d like. Anyone see any issues with this that I’m missing?

Like a few others on here we got one of these Costco 12v fridges. $250 and it works great. I currently have it in the boat but we'll use it in the truck too.

    IMG_20201221_142054830.jpg

In the boat it's hooked to the house battery (88ah lead acid) and has been running, and keeping beers cold, 24/7 for the past month, just off a 160 watt solar panel. Overnight it will consume maybe 10/15% of the battery's capacity and is usually fully charged again (float mode) by about 11am.

Here's the amp draw with the fridge running, phone and bluetooth speaker charging, and a couple of LED lights on.
    IMG_20210206_165226930.jpg

I have the panel mounted to the boat's Yakima roof rack using 4 of these quick release clamps bolted to the bottom of the panel. The panel is easily moved to the Yakima on the trucks camper shell.
    IMG_20210212_145707022.jpg

The truck already has an 30ah AGM in the bed that charges while the truck is running (isolation relay) but I do need to get a solar charge controller for it.

I went with a CFX 75DZ and built a platform to replace the 40% rear seat. At the time, I wasn’t planning to do a bed cap so I wanted the fridge inside and out of the elements. It’s usually just two humans and two dogs in the truck so I wasn’t worried about losing a single rear seat.

To make use of all the space available, I raised the platform as high as I could while still allowing the fridge to open. Then I put a drawer under it with locking slides. I also used some marine hardware for lash down points and strapped the fridge handles to them. It’s using a Blue Sea panel with power run from the Genesis dual battery system.

If I had to do it again, I would have gotten the SDHQ dual battery system instead. I didn’t want to relocate stuff under the hood, but the Genesis ended up being a bit of a headache anyway.

Refrigerator and house battery mount. House battery runs refrigerator, water pump, and 2 USB ports. Uses the same battery as starting does, isolated to charge after starting battery is at full charge and disconnects when not running.

Dometic CFX65W. 1 1/2 years of hard use, no complaints.

You all with backseat fridge platforms need to start installing these things on lockable lazy Susan’s. Flip and lock to the interior so then you’re on the back roads going to camp sites your guests have easy access to the dr. peppers. Rotate 180 and lock facing the door when you get to the campsite so you have just as easy access to the dr. peppers. Just a thought..

I picked up a snowmaster and trying to get it wired straight to the battery. I ran the wire and got the anderson plug. I cut the aux port that came with my fridge and added an anderson plug to that as well. I just want to make sure that it will work like that? I have a 15amp fuse between the fridge and battery, I feel like that should work. The fridge should not run more than 5 or so amps max I would think. Should I do something different?

You’re certainly right you can spend that much but you don’t necessarily have to.
My 45qt iceco was $380 shipped and uses the danfoss/secop compressor that many name brands use. Also has wheels which is nice so I can wheel it wherever I want. 300w/hr lifepo solar generator was $215.48 shipped and, by my calculations should have enough juice to power the fridge 24/7. Today I just picked up a flat 100w panel for $140.84. Thats $736.32 for a setup that should will last me 10+ years (I hope). I sold a waeco I picked up for free and fixed with bad electronics but still good danfoss compressor to help cover the cost. It doesn’t have to be crazy expensive
