Back in the day Home Depot sold some gopher dynamite sticks lol. They looked like a big ol m80. You put it in the hole, light it up. And let it do it’s thing. It worked.

also we would put the hose and wait for them to come out thru a new dig up hole. Have the shovel ready and bammmmm

I tried this, the hose ran for 30 minutes and never backed up. The gopher never came out either. I think this only works if the gopher hasn't had time to really develop his tunnels.

You could try the carbon monoxide method. Get an nice dirty gasoline engine (diesel isn't nearly as effective) without a catalytic converter, old car/truck/jeep or if nobody around has a vehicle you can borrow that was originally built to run on leaded gas, use a generator or motorcycle. Pipe the exhaust into the hole for 30-60 minutes, the smaller and more efficient the engine the longer it will take.
If you were in my area you could borrow my 89 f-250 with the 460 and all the smog junk removed, it's good for many things but it's top notch at burning a lot of gas.

Then use metal rod and poke the ground. If it goes through easy you found the hole. Dig out loose dirt and debris so hole is wide open. Stick the trap down into the hole. The gopher will try to close the hole and trip the trap. Highly unlikely to get the dog as if he trips the trap, the end is in the hole that will snap. I have a dozen of these and they work great in my dad's pasture. And no dog has ever gotten hurt.

Correct me if I'm wrong Sandy, but if I kill all the golfers they'll lock me up and throw away the key.

In CA he just need a classic car a 67 Plymouth Barracuda should do it.
Incidentally my 89 f-250 came from CA from a friend, with no smog he couldn't sell it to anybody in state so I took it for free and just has to get it across the country.

:hattip:all you guys who said get the black hole, I owe you beer.

After 3 months of chasing this bastard. I tried 2 other gopher traps. I tried flooding him with my 130psi garden hose for 30 minutes, all it did was raise my bill. I tried smoke bombs which may not be legal in residential, all it did was maybe contaminate some soil and he packed the tunnel with soil the next day, as if to taunt me. I even dug up his tunnel and sat in the back yard drinking beer for a few hours with my pelet gun, watching and waiting, he never came out.

I ordered the black hole. I was skeptical. It arrived last weekend but I was so skeptical I didn't bother setting it until Friday afternoon. I found an end tunnel where he had been eating my canna one after another, dug it up and set the trap. It was gonna rain all Saturday and I was going out of town, so I figured he would just camp safely in his tunnel.

I just got home and let the dogs out to the yard. Decided to go look at the trap. It was sprung but I noticed soil around it had moved, I figured the rain maybe tripped it. Pulled the trap out and a big fat one is stuck in there.

I'm so happy. Tomorrow in the daylight I'll remove and dispose of him and set the trap again for fun. I'm sure he has some buddies.

When I was kid my family occasionally visited an uncle who lived right on the McKenzie river. He had a huge lawn. I never paid attention to how many gopher holes it had until I accidently set off one of his traps. It was simply a mechinism that consisted of a 3 inch barrel that held a 12 gauge shot gun shell, and a rod that stuck in the ground bout 6 inches which acted as a trigger. Talk about getting startled; I near shit my pants when I touched that thing. It had shielding for any upward force, and was staked into the groung, so it would stay afixed when it fired. I think if a pup set it off once it would never go near it again:D

A little view of the damage he did. The jujube tree turns into a twig every winter, but all the plants from that twig out to the Xanadu are eaten. About $50 there, the rest of my yard has similar. Seems like he really liked canna.

I just pulled him from the trap and buried him in his tunnel, I plan to plant a dwarf banana tree right where he is so it can eat him over time.

I'm legitimately disappointed you didn't post pictures of the black hole or the gopher. :notsure:

So, I was watering the yard yesterday on my lunch break and Tuco and I noticed a small hole with a small dirt pile beside it. This was new, I didn't see it while I was doing the morning poop scoop check. Tuco immediately tried to dig it up so I knew a little bastard was in there. When I got off work I dug a bit and set the trap.
    20210224_160442.jpg

I checked it every few hours but from what I have seen these things tend to be active from morning until sunset. It was windy as hell last night, gusts all night up to 60mph so I slept knowing that wind through the hole would piss him off.

Woke up today and like a kid on Christmas I went outside and saw the trap had been triggered. Note the spring loaded arm is up now.
    20210225_072744.jpg

Picked it up and there's the new chubby bastard.
    20210225_072752.jpg

I'm going to set the trap again in that hole today to see if he has friends.

This is great! How exactly does the trap get them? Same concept as a mouse trap?

Pretty much. The hole on one end attracts them because they feel the need to enclose the tunnel. When the go in they push a trigger and a wire on the spring smashes their ribs, or whatever part of their body lands there.

Ive been told - Dry Ice will kill the gophers.

With good leather gloves on, drop some dry ice into the hole then over it up.
The gas from the dry ice melting will kill it.

    So im told...
