Used Truck purchase: Engine light on "running rich"

Contemplating a very low mileage Gen 1 Tundra, and when I say low mileage I'm meaning about 110,000 miles. That's a unicorn.

But there's some issues. The major one is a engine light the owners claim is that it's "running rich." Is that a thing, and if so, anyone want to suggest how that is corrected and the costs?

There's some minor cosmetic damage and the usual bad paint peeling. It's been in a light rollover, might have a salvage title, clear may need some body work.

It's 5 grand but been for sale for months. I'm going to probably look at it for the usual, motor, transmission, cancerous rust, etc. I might be able to get it for a lot less...

The engine light is the most concerning. Thoughts? Thinking of taking it to a shop, having them run codes. Injectors maybe, and if so what's the bill for injectors?

This will be your 5th truck? Save some for the rest of us enthusiasts!

Anyways, @dirtydeeds sells "upgraded" injectors for these trucks for a moderate price.

I don't know the pricing for the V8, but others have used those. @Professional Hand Model @Hooptytrix and I'm sure others that I'm not aware of off-hand.

I suppose it could be a MAF, or O2 sensor. Something easy probably.

Typically running rich is due to faulty air fuel sensors. Or a fault mass air flow sensor

Yeah. My truck runs so much better after putting in 4 Brand New Denso A/F Sensors. Exhaust smells clean and steamy. I think I gained 3 Wurrrld Peas Global Credítz after them.

    $200 for all 4 Densos.

    Hitachi MAF cost about $55.

Injectors cost about $350. Install was free DIY.

I think just about every regular poster here knows how I feel about buying 1st gen tundras. Considering the rust issues and now it's age, buy from the southern states. Texas and Florida have plenty of trucks for sale that have never seen snow and deals can be had.

Saying a truck's been in a light rollover is like a woman saying she's just a little pregnant. It just doesn't work that way. Get it to a competent mechanic and see what damage was done. There could be major problems ranging from a warped frame to physical damage to the engine. There can be pinched and broken wires and hoses, cracked steel lines in the emission system, broken rubber hoses, and a host of other problems. The price of a pre-purchase inspection is a small price to pay to make sure the truck is worth the purchase price.

I agree except imo, just pass and find something worth your time and money. Unless it's $1,000 don't bother.

Anybody with skateboarding in their history would get excited to see that kickflip-smith grind was landed clean. I would give the driver a perfect 10 on that.

    Slight roll over.

The perfect time for fiberglass fenders/besides and back half the rear! Probably save you several grand on stock repairs too!

All excellent points, thank you. Clearly the price is too high. I was hoping to scoop it up for maybe 2 grand, but they seem to want far more than that so I doubt I'll bother.

As to the rollover, first the seller was not forthright with it which is a warning sign. Second, she did downplay it but the photos show some roof and side damage. Unclear how that occurred but I've gotten so much vague or not-forthright information it's a dead end to pursue.

    Thanks for all the feedback!

Oh. It’s long since fixed. It’s the reason I got the truck so cheap

Not to derail but I've always wondered if automotive engineers get excited when they see one of their cars in a high speed pursuit. If I designed that Chevy and saw it roll and keep going I'd be proud. I always thought thats the best advertising for dependability.

I don't know about the rollover and hope I never have first-hand experience. But my money on the CEL and "running rich" is a dead cat.

He had a little Pre-Flip Ollie Hop to feel the English, but the slight hesitation post grind to gather his Mojo yields a 9.5 for sure.
