I found this video very informative. It has a lot of information that will answer many questions that people have regarding towing with our trucks. Video is about 23 minutes long.

The good weather will be coming soon and camping season will be in full swing before we know it. For anyone with questions about their towing weight's for their trailers and trucks I highly suggest watching the video in this thread. It's good information and will answer many questions.

There has been quite a few people who create an account and post that they are getting a bed camper or pulling a 10k lb TT. When asked what their payload sticker says, they say they can haul 1600 lb or tow 10k lb because that’s what the book said. No one ever checks or actually weighs their truck to verify. Seems then try to justify it by saying they’ll get E tires or airbags or a weight distribution hitch and everyone else is wrong and the #s are just suggestions.

With my family out on the road with these people, I wish more would do the research or listen to common sense.

I plan on getting another another TT and am looking at around 5k max cause I know I want to carry propane/water/food/gear.

When I look around the campsites, I honestly think most folks are over their payload capacity so I'm glad I'm not on the road with most of them.

Before purchasing my Tundra I have a 13 Tacoma. i towed a 27' TT dry is 4750# and loaded on a trip was 5750# tongue is 500#. I did have to install Air bags and HD leaf packs (OME) and a very expensive Hensley weight distribution hitch. The truck did site level, due to the air bags and HD leafs, and did ride and drive well pulling the TT on most trips. However after doing so much research on towing capacities / capabilities / weights, cargo weight tongue capacity...ect...ect...ect. I realized i was an absolute IDIOT and I'm not ashamed to admit it for towing this size of a trailer with my Tacoma. We took a trip from Rhode Island to Nova Scotia Canada and the truck struggled and my hands were numb from holding onto the steering wheel so tight. The following year before camping season I traded in the Tacoma for my 2020 Tundra and It was the BEST thing I ever did. So now that I have educated myself a lot more I feel like I need to share what I have learned with others in hopes that some members will listen and realize that towing a trailer with your family inside and others on the road is VERY SERIOUS. I still have the same travel trailer and I don't think I will go any larger of a trailer. Maybe a different floor plan in the future, but I will be keeping the weight within the limits for sure. Not only is weight important but physical size (length) is just as important. It does amaze me what people tow with there trucks and say it is OK to do so. I know I did when I had my Tacoma, but boy was I so wrong.

Honestly, it feels good to say I was wrong and I was very lucky that I had no issues, nobody got hurt. Because now I can say I am smarter and more educated and I am doing the right thing.

I sure hope people really do their research and not just listen to the RV Dealership salesman or not fully understand their weight limits of their trucks

Stay safe - and Travel smart - Cheers

Unfortunately with a 27' TT your still going to be over your payload capacity. I'm over as well pulling around 5.5K.

Actually no, i'm not over my payload at all. Payload on my Tundra is 1320# on the door sticker, minus 84# for options on the door sticker, equals 1236#. With myself and my wife in the truck is minus 300#, equalling 936# remaining remaining for payload. The tongue weight of my TT is 500# with no distribution, equals 436# of payload capacity remaining. Towing capacity of my Truck is 9700# as per the manual and my code on the door tag. My trailer dry is 4750# and Gross on the trailer is 6000#, however I have been weighed in at 5750# on my heaviest trip. So 9700# - 5750# = 3950# still available to tow. However the issue is the small amount of payload capacity that is still remaining at 436#, That will be the problem IF i was to increase the weight of a future trailer. I carry nothing in the bed of the truck and carry no liquids when on a trip and it is only my wife and I in the truck. I think I'm doing pretty good at my weight limitations, and I am within my towing and payload limits. If you want I can take a picture of the door stickers on the truck and the towing capacity in the manual. I can't get the info for the trailer right now, the cover is still on the trailer. Hopefully taking the cover off soon.

I thought I was OK too until I had the truck weighted. My door stick says 1250lbs for payload on a 2020 Tundra SR5 4X4. With a full tank of fuel, spray in bed liner, hard tonneau cover and my side steps my payload was just over 800lbs. Take you truck in a weight it if you want to get shocked.

I did and it works great. There's a thread on it somewhere with before and after temperature readings.

You can subtract yourself out of that too. The Tundra payload already includes a 150lb driver.

I believe that’s the same for all the oems who follow j2807. I know Chevy and Ford have it in the notes section in their brochures.
