I installed Sumo Springs, instructions said to completely loosen the axle u-bolts, swap out the stock rubber bumpers and then torque the bolts again. No mention of replacing the bolts.

Yet I've read here that the bolts are designed to stretch and the threads will deform. New bolts are required.

Which is it? Am I going to be ok provided I never touch them again? Or should I get new bolts? If yes, what kind?

my understanding was that u bolts were one time and done because they stretch and bend slightly when torqued. However, this install and others I looked up reuse the original u bolts. So, I am no help!

    Alot of them
Yes I was on the fence about it too when I moved my lift over from truck to truck. I got a new set from Toytec....about $40.00 or so. Well worth the piece of mine especially if you have kids that ride with you.

    Not enough....
I wouldn't stress over it. I would say if you re-use them, as I did with my Timbren install, just recheck the torque after a few hundred miles. They aren't going to break, the biggest concern is just not keeping the proper torque if they stretch. I have reused plenty of yield to torque bolts more than once :notsure:

You will be fine. Just torque to spec and check them again after a week of driving.

Just to add. Make sure the threads are clean before you undo the nuts. Also apply some lube to the threads to protect them when you undo them. Make sure you clean the top of the leaf spring before setting the Sumospring in place. Bottom plate should be free of dirt.

Torque em to 75 - 80 and you will be fine.(use blue loctite on the U-bolts also)
If your a worry wart, Pick up another set of nuts in the Nylock or aircraft type that do not come loose.
Pop those on after the original have been torqued to spec and nothing will come loose no matter what.
Not even if you run over an IUD.... truck will be in shreds but those nuts will be still tight.

I just ordered the black Sumos and this was a concern of mine too. I will take all the good advice here and re-use the original U-bolts, loctite and recheck after a few hundred miles.

I put brand new ones on then loosened them to install my bump stops. Re-torqued. Checked torque again a couple weeks later. No problems.

Oh and never use lock washers or soft metal washers.

If you use loctite don't recheck, unless you check at like 10lbs less than what you torqued them too. You run the risk of breaking the loctite off the threads.
