I'm trying to troubleshoot some new issues that have popped up with my 2008 CrewMax. I apologize ahead of time if this post gets a little long. I've got a 190k miles on the factory 5.7 engine. It's always had the normal "ticking" on start up and had a bit of a diesel sound when running. In the last month and a half or so, I have noticed that there's an additional clattering that happens at certain RPM (between 1500 and 2000 rpm or so). I would also get intermittent P0012 and P0022 codes during this time. Up to a couple of weeks ago, the issue was intermittent. I have also noticed that my gas mileage has dropped quite a bit, power is down, and it surges under acceleration also. A couple of weeks ago, I noticed my oil pressure has been about half of what it normally is during driving and will intermittently drop to near zero. I have parked the truck until I can figure this out. Based on the trouble codes and some forum searching, my current assumption is that the issue is tied to a possible blockage in the oiling system causing problems correctly running the VVT system.

What I have done so far:
    • Checked oil level (was good)
    • Checked oil filter for collapse (no collapse, replaced with factory Toyota)
    • Oil was changed in Jan 2021 (Amsoil 0w20 for this change and has been used for as long as I've owned the truck, should still be good)
    • Pulled all four VVT oil control valves, cleaned them, tested for electrical function, and swapped sides of the engine (OCVs appeared to move with no issue, noise seems to have gotten worse and now present on both banks)
When the weather improves a bit, I'm planning on doing the following maintenance/troubleshooting steps:
    • Pull the valve covers and replace gaskets and spark plug tube seals (I've never done it and I have a small leak on the driver side)
    • Replace the filters for the oil control valves as they may be blocked (as far as I know they are located in the valve covers)
    • Replace PCV (Another maintenance item while I'm in the area)
    • Replace spark plugs (I'm about due for this also)
    • Replace oil control valves (they may have tested okay but still not be working correctly)
While I have the valve cover off, is there anything else that I can inspect in the valvetrain to troubleshoot this issue? Any other obvious parts that I can look at replacing that could fix the problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suspect the timing chain / tensioner. With the valve covers off you can see some of the timing chain. If you turn the crank you should be able to tell how much slack you have. I have never worked on a 5.7 timing chain but hopefully someone else will have some experience and can give you a better idea what to look for.

I may have missed it, but how long have you owned it? VVTI blockage issues usually show up on rigs that havent had reliable oil change intervals. If your VVTI passages are blocked then your timing chain tensioners are too.

Good call. I will at least take a look at them while I have access.

I've owned the truck for between 6 and 7 years. I know that I tried to change the oil every 7500 miles or so but there is a possibility that I may have stretched it too far a time or two. I'm hoping that if I find plugged up filters and replace them that the noise will go away and function will return to normal.

See if you can get a mechanical gauge and test actual oil pressure.
