Most of the Toyota ribbing comes from people who erroneously think of our trucks as imports, and are proudly ignorant of how/where they are made. I've brought it up to a few people that my Tundra was made in Texas, while their Silverado was made in Mexico. I've heard the litany of excuses, each one more desperate than the last. Ran into a guy online who furiously told me that my Tundra is "Jap crap", and even though his truck was made in Mexico, Mexico is still North America so that means it's American made. I'm not making this up. He was incredibly angry. Told me that I'm not a patriotic American. It was a good time.
And I think the most recent one from a friend who is a GM lifer was "well with my truck, at least the money stays local." When I asked him to explain how that works, he had nothing. He just fell back on "I've always owned GM, it's what our family does." I will say that my one friend who is a staunch Ford loyalist eyed my truck up long and hard the first time he saw it in person. He even complimented it. He's got an Ecoburst motor and I think the sound of the iForce firing up made him miss a truck with a real engine.

And while we're talking about people ripping on our trucks, any of you guys ever get this one?

Person: "The Japs bombed Pearl Harbor, I'll never give them my money, they are our enemies. My grandpa fought them."
Me: "My truck was made by Americans in Texas. Also, you know none of the people working at Toyota's HQ in Japan were involved in the bombing 77 years ago. Most probably weren't even alive."
    Person: "Doesn't matter."
Me: "Do you drink German beer?"

I have a friend with a pretty nice lifted 02 chevy 2500 and he says he'll never accept my truck as american even though I just pulled a bigger 2500 out of a snowbank the week before. took him for a few rides in it and hes starting to let it grow on him but he still mumbles jap crap to himself every time I show up somewhere

My friend likes to call my track Jap crap. I told him it’s made in America. Texas baby! He says yeah, but the majority of the money goes back to Japan. I see, well yeah, a lot of our money goes over to Mexico, what’s the difference? He says well the executives live here in the US. I said how’s that working out for GM? He admits that the Toyota is a good reliable vehicle. But he’s been a Ford fan boy his whole life.

I like the old stuff but nothing new that they come out with.

I actually don’t hate any of the other brands. I’ve owned them all and for the most part they were pretty decent to me. They all have their issues that I won’t go into. But I did have a good time in those vehicles and none of them left me stranded. Except for the Ford it blew up right in front of my house LMFAO!

BTW my wife is half Japanese, I figure I might as well have a truck that’s half Japanese. My two Hapa girls!

Had mine for a month, but drove a ton of them over the past few months. I was suprised that they all seemed to have a diesel like sound. I chalked it up to Toyota Engineers studying the BIG 3s BIG TRUCKS to find out what Americans wanted in a Big Truck...make it sound like 2500. Lol

Cut the screen out last evening. The whistle is 95% gone, but I'm pretty sensitive to high pitched sounds, so I'll chalk this up for a win. Thanks to everyone that helped with great advice. Much appreciated.

The "Diesel sound" though irritating and disconcerting is normal. I've been on this issue/sound since day 1 on my 17 Tundra PRO. It hasn't gotten better or worse, is more notable when cold and though most report it goes away when warm, I still have it in light/off throttle situations. I can make it make the sound at will. Hold truck in 2-3rd gear, and between 3-4K at light and off throttle situations it clatters away. Let fully off, no noise. Accelerate, no noise. Let off slightly and clatter. Beat the crap out of it, and it makes a lovely flat tappet motor noise on or off throttle. It's a combination of quad OHC's, VVT that alters cam lift and timing, super thin oil weights, and thin valve covers. Several have also found that they had a cracked exhaust header, may be worth looking into. My sound has NOT been this.

I have had it in 4X and Toyota sent a rep, and opened a permanent case so if I have an issue down the road it should (hahahaha) be covered.

After researching this extensively, I've come to the conclusion this noise is the VVT changing cam profile and 'clatter' is the VVT changing the timing and lift of the exhaust valves. I was also intrigued to discover that the 5.7 in the Tundra does not have an EGR system, this is accomplished with the VVTi. Valve timing overlap allows some of the exhaust gas to be pulled in during intake cycle, so eliminates the need for It is NOT pinging or predetonation, it is not lifters collapsing, it is not cam chain slapping. I've even experimented with different oil weights (within recommended specs), additives, fuel grades, with some success, but it is there. I've also test driven 4-5 trucks and all have it in some fashion, though most are quieter. You can find people talking about this going back to the introduction of the motor, and other than 'bad cams' in the first gen motors, there are few to no motors self destructing. Power is great, motor is smooth, idles and starts well, does NOT make the noise when revving freely, only under load/driving.

Unfortunately the sound is in the frequency I hear very well. Has been great over the years to diagnose problems, but can drive you crazy.... 3/4 of the time others can't hear it. It's comical that almost all my vehicles have raucous valve-trains. Moto guzzi motorcycle motors are also loud, and I hate valve train noise...... I'll continue to take to the dealers, am going to go to a new one next month for the 35K checkup/service to see what their techs say.

The Whistle is a known issue, is generally the TB gasket. Several threads on this.

I think the 'haters' may be a regional thing. I've only had a few negative comments about driving a 'jap truck' or imports, most think highly of the Tundra/Tacoma, even if they'd never buy one due to it being an import. Occasionally will come across a good old boy, with the attitude, but I just laugh. Not worth my time to engage. I wanted to buy an American truck, almost pulled the trigger on a GMC Sierra with the AT package, but decided on the Tundra because it had everything I wanted and hit every checkblock (with the exception of heated seats which I added) with a sales price of $43K.... The Sierra was $58K discounted to $47K.... Add in reliability, ride quality (PRO), overall look, and resale, you can't beat the Tundra unless you want gadgets and toys..... I wanted a truck..... THOUGH I would love vented seats ;-)

I also really liked that this is an "American Truck" Sure the mother company is Toyota which is HQ in Japan, but Toyota North America designed the truck in the US (Michigan) for the US and most of its components are US sourced and made, many even onsite in Texas, and motors/trans/differentials in Arkansas and Alabama, by Americans.... NOT exported/imported from Canada or Mexico or Indonesia or India like the big 3 (with the exception of Ford) I care more for American workers than Corporate execs and shills......

Exactly. I hate when people use the "at least the money stays local" argument. It stays local where? Local with some big executives making millions? I'm not really into the whole "executives and the 1% are evil" thing, but I'd rather support American factory workers and make a couple Japanese execs a little more rich than support a bunch of foreign factory workers.

More money stays in america when you buy a tundra anyways because almost 75% of the materials are sourced from U.S. companies unlike the big 3. There's no question that tundras are the most american truck even if they are a Japanese company because the money gets reciprocated back into our economy

Am thinking about adding a CAI. I have the TRD filter element in the stock housing. I've used a Volant in the past and really liked it, but am also considering the TRD PRO or AFE.

I laugh at the "at least its American" regarding the Big 3. Most of them are Made In Mexico now, while the Japanese open plants all over America and the Big 3 Layoff and Ship South as fast as they can. Id rather have 3000 Americans working and getting paid with a couple of Japanese Execs riding around in yachts while making good vehicles vs A couple of GM Execs riding in private planes and producing garbage vehicles with bail out money while laying off the entire rustbelt!

I really hate to see Toyota starting to shift production south though....greed conquers all.

I know exactly the sound you are talking about. I bought a 2017 the in January and it had a k&N cold air intake and make the whistle that everyone takes about. I ordered a gasket without the mesh and a lot of the whistle went away. I decided to put the stock air intake back on (came with the truck) and it still makes the noise. In fact, if I accelerate just right I get an "airy" kind of "sucking" noise as well. This only happens when underway and can not be duplicated by revving the engine in park. I did swing through one Toyota dealer about a month ago and they said it was the intake, but it is definitely not and I will be taking it into a different dealer soon as can. I have 35,200 miles so the warranty is getting close. I have a suspicion it is the secondary air blower/fan (you can hear it discharge when the truck is turned off) and is in the same location as the whistle. I can easily hear it over the radio at a normal volume.

I don’t have the whistle that I can hear, but I’ve had the discharge sound when turning the truck off ever since I’ve had the truck. I’d get it looked at, but you will probably be told it’s normal.

I have a 2017 5.7 with a similar issue. The sound is consistent when I'm in traffic. It starts between 20 - 40 ish MPH with the RPM around 2000. In the mornings I don't hear the noise only in the afternoons in traffic. Took to one dealer and they recommend idler pulley for the squeak an a fuel injector clean service for the "valve clicking" sound. Estimate was about $500, yikes! I took it to the second dealership for second opinion and the experienced tech there lubed the serpentine belt and the noise is gone. They said if it came back just replace the belt.

Just seeing this .. i made a post about my truck recently haha. Same diesel noise. But my fathers truck same year is a little quieter. Dealer said they can vary but nothing to be concerned about change the oil and drive the damn thing. Still don’t like it but I’m dealing because i really love my truck otherwise
