Wanting to upgrade my head unit display. What are my options? Most head units deletes the use of the rear DVD entertainment system and others. Is there a way around this?

Strongly considering Dasaita or Pioneed 5500NEX flush mount. I see a lot of Phoenix 13" being used and sold as used, so I am not sure if their product is worth the effort and money.

    TIA

I looked at this for quite some time last year. I really wanted a new headunit with Android Auto and better screen quality for the backup camera and aftermarket front camera. However, none of them supported rear seat entertainment (RSE). It seems like the aftermarket ones don't have the option to turn on/off the rear screen, enable the function to play or pause, etc. I'm sure if you pulled up the wiring diagram, you may be able to get the sound and screen to power on (and possibly stay on all the time), but I just decided to use the stock system so I don't spend any more money.

Now, it's there a replacement compartment that I can use to delete the RES all together?

I don't think so. I'm assuming the hole for the RSE would be bigger than the SR5 and Limited without RSE so there's going to be a big hole in the headliner if you take the RSE out and try to replace with OEM parts. I haven't really looked into any aftermarket solution except for an aftermarket DVD player which you may work in lieu of the OEM RSE.

Do we know if the RSE will work using the remote and not the HUD?

Nothing out there that is aftermarket is going to support your rear entertainment system. We recently updated to a pioneer dmh-w4660nex, the main reason is because it has an HDMI input. Just need to figure out how to run a video output to it. Good luck finding what fits your needs.20FB1428-77B4-461D-80AC-D0779B760695.jpg

Hi fellas just looking for a bit of clarity. Are you guys saying if you update the front head unit you ONLY lose the ability to control the RSE from the front? Or are you saying the RSE stops working altogether and you can’t even control it independently from the rear?

If I am still able to control the RSE from the rear that’s totally fine with me.

I believe the only way to make it work is by replacing the JBL amp along with the head unit. My kids are on their phones and tablets, the res does not serve its purpose for my household.

Jumping on this thread to get some opinions on rear flip down DVD/blue-ray players. Just bought an SR5 without DVD and wanting to add a nice display for road tripping. Would like to be able to get netflix via wireless hotspot. Thanks

I'd just get some Ipads mounted behind the front seats.

From all my research on the Phoenix it's not worth the overall headache. I've got friends who have installed them in their Tundras and they told me to look else where unless I enjoy tinkering with it constantly because of the software issues.

I ended up with Dasaita. Still struggling with making the OEM reverse camera to work. I have a aftermarket camera on order but everything takes forever to come here in PE, Canada.

Once you upgrade to any aftermarket head unit, your rear entertainment system is completely unusable. To be honest with you, with the ability of tablets, phones and digital media, i was ok losing all rse abilities. I did a bunch of research, no after market head unit let's you keep your rse.

My kids use their ipad's and each of them use headphones.

    Good luck with your choice.

Thank you for the precise answer! I was originally considering the dasaita but it seems the audio quality isn’t the greatest and somewhat seems like it’s a product still in beta stages. My mind is leaning more towards a flush 7” kenwood unit

If your end goal is sound quality. Go with kenwood or pioneer. The android hu, although features pack, wont give you that quality sound you want. They put out at most 2-2.5v preamp. Compare to 4-5v preamp from kenwood and other mainstream brand.
Unless you're willing to spend some extra on some quality line driver to boost preamp signal, it just wont have that quality sound.
That being said, i have the joying brand android radio. Works fine for me with the added 5 channels amp and upgrade speakers.
Of course the RES is useless now. But with a 10in screen, my toddler can see it from the middle row back seat just fine. Sound quality wise, is good enough for me. Plenty loud and clear.

Yeah man sound quality is a big one for me so based on what you’re telling me, kenwood is gonna be the answer. Did you manage to get your reverse camera working with the joying unit?

Yup. Everything they send was a true plug n play. Everything works like it supposed to. I didnt have to do anything except pick the correct canbus setting from the radio.

Hey all, attached is a screenshot of this particular unit being powered outside of the vehicle.....maybe someone can test this out? I am currently getting ready to upgrade the headunit and really hate the idea of having features that don't work

Maybe you can try this harness.
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Axxess-AX-...Entertainment-Retention-Harness-/184388053997

I tried it and it does NOT work on our 2017 sequoia limited. I will retain the sound when you put your headunit in the aux mode. The harness have 2 plug. 1 for audio and 1 for video signal. Our 2017 only have 1 plug for the audio. I cant find where to plug the video plug into. So for me it didnt work. It also didnt list it my year model anyway. But it does for your year.

I would plug the radio and see if you have 2 plug like the harness. If you do, you can retain the RES..

I think that is for if your vehicle came with factory Nav. Mine doesn't..... This is really bugging me, the screen shot I posted shows it working, on a bench no less. Somehow I think it just needs to get battery, acc, and grounding for it to function, but I don't have the resources to try it

Since the OP brought up Dasaita, I'm not sure this harness will work. It shows two white, female connectors that dangle free on my Dasaita harness. I have no idea what the plug into and my RES doesn't work in my 08 Seq LTD.

Remaining Dasaita connections: Photo 3_Remaining Dasaita Connections.jpg
Remaining SUV connections: Photo 3_Remaining Truck Connections.jpg (Actually, the green trigger wire on the gray connector is now connected to the orange trigger wire on the Dasaita harness)

This is the backside of my navigation jbl factory radio with RES.
You can see i circled the female connector where the res male end plug into. But for me that only peoduce sound and no video signal.

This is with the adapter harness plugged into the male res plug.

Brandon, wouldn't the plug right below the circled one go into the extra plug?

Possibly, but there isn't one available on the factory harness. That's the problem. It's already connected to the factory radio just like the photo. I believe the lower unit on the radio is for the sirius xm?

Maybe try connecting it? IDK, I'm also thinking why would you be using it if you already have the nav and rse?

Well for 1 the factory radio is terrible. Outdated.
With the android radio you get much more features.
When you go aftermarket, you lose RES. At time people with kids want to be able to play movie frim the RES and have sounds coming through the car speakers and not the bt headphones. The adapter harness supposed to fix that. But i feel as though the factory dvd player does not send video signal back to the headunit. Even on factory radio. If i remember correctly.

The dvd player does send video signal back to the headunit. You can watch the dvd on the front when you're parked with parking brake engaged.

Ok, but there HAS to be a way to power up the player without the communication lines, I posted a pic of this thing being bench tested. If I had the resources I would test this myself
