What are your experiences with ordering tires online from a site like Tire Rack or similar? Looks like there are hundreds of dollars to be saved by going this route. Any negative reactions from the installing shop?

    Thanks!

Ordered my BFGs from tire rack, they showed up a day or two later and had them mounted by a local shop. Zero complaints.

My local garage quoted me $262/tire for Cooper AT3 LT's 275/65/18's.

    This included install and balance.

This was definitely competitive with online prices, since I would have then had to go somewhere to have them mounted and balanced.

local discount type tire shops like Midas and Monro were literally hundreds of dollars more for add ons they claimed I would need (valve stems, "insurance", etc)

    I was happily surprised.

Shop around, and then give your local garage a call.

you have to consider Initial mount & balance plus free balance & rotation every 7500 miles and add the cost to online prices. Last time I checked I got a better deal at local shops.

I’ve ordered from both tire rack and tire buyer and had both direct shipped to a local installer with no issues at all. Local shops vary widely on install costs.

I’ve also bought a set of Falkens from Walmart for a smoking good price and took them to a local shop to install with no issues.

There is a benefit going with a shop who is affiliated with one of the online retailers if for whatever reason the tires are bad (won’t balance, etc) you can exchange them with little hassle.

Bought from discount tires direct twice with not problems. Tire shop had no problem mounting them for me. Last set of tires, I went to a local tire shop and their mounted and balanced price was the same as DTD's price was for the tires alone. So it was cheaper to buy local.

I've used Tirebuyer.com and it was shipped free to my desired installer based on your location. So you can pick and choose based off of install cost and location. Other retailers provide similiar options.

Ordered online and had local tire shop put them on and balance.

Aside from them trying to overcharge me for services they didn't perform and me catching them and having them refund that portion, it went ultra smooth.

If I could have found them locally (I tried), I would have purchased in person from a local shop.

Have all been flawless. I do prefer when the local place is cheaper and always give them a shot to beat the price.
They have only done it once though the are getting closer in price each time.

In 20+ years of modifying vehicles, never once have I actually purchased a set of tires from a local brick & mortar location. That being said, for nearly all of those years I've worked for an independent repair/performance shop, so I'm all about supporting local businesses, but the deals available online make it almost irresponsible to pay local rates. It used to be (10-15 years ago) frowned upon, and some tire shops would not install your own tires; but now it has become quite common place.

Bought current tires from tirerack no issues, and my new wheels just purchased from custom offsets great communication so far, haven't received them yet but I don't anticipate any issues. Tbh I've had more problems with brick and mortar tire stores than I have online over the years.

Granted this was for my cars not the Tundra but I used to swear by tire rack but can now do better with a local tire chain's site or even asking my mechanic. The only time I use Tire Rack now is to buy a tire that I can't get through one of the above.

I’ve bought from Amazon, tirerack, eBay. Then my local tire shop and install and balance for $20 each.

Give the local shop a chance to price match the best deal you can find online. I’ve done just that on my last couple sets. They’d rather make a few bucks on the rubber than none at all.

10 years ago I bought tires online and took them to my buddies shop to have them mounted. My fiancé who ran a sandwich shop broke my stones by saying, "you don't take food to a restaurant for them to cook" and I actually felt bad for about a minute. The thing was I wanted specific tires ( for my corvette) and he couldn't get them or a similar set was way too expensive. They may not be getting the mark up on the tires but the fact is you are still giving them business. But yes check to see if a local shop has a competitive price if not don't feel bad, you are still giving them $$$$.

My local shop truly surprised me with their price compared to online purchase then pay to install, or the dreaded "discount" type tire places.

Their price wasn't just competitive...it was down right lower (by $100's with some estimates I got).

Thanks for all the comments and replies. So after visiting a few of the tires shops in my neighborhood (America's, Les Shwab & Goodguys) it turned out that America's tire was actually competitively priced when compared to an online retailer (+ installation). I'll be utilizing America's tire.

Now... it looks like I get to wait for the exact Michelin LTX AT2 to be available.
