2020 Tundra broke down with 4300 miles

I've had 10 Toyota batteries in 18 months, and 3 Optimas so far....

 

Why?

 

Not even Toyota knows... nor the engineers from the factory...

 

I think the dealerships description of what happened may add up to what you experienced. If the butterfly valve in the throttle body fails it should go to the closed position that does allow some leakage that is sufficient for low idle. I would think it would fail in the closed condition and go into a "limp home" mode. Basically just enough to let you get off the road. If the engine completely died (0 RPM) and you had no power steering that would be considered a safety issue by NHTSA. Did it drop to low idle or completely shut the engine down? Cars are so reliable today most don't know just how much assist you are getting with power steering. If you have never experienced the engine completely dying on a modern car it takes a ton of force to turn the steering wheel. Many would not be capable of steering in a surprise situation. Some of what you describe sounds like the engine went to 0 rpm, other pieces of your explanation sound like the engine could still idle. I would think if the butterfly valve/throttle failed you could start and idle but that would be it. If you were driving, it should just drop to idle and you should have some level of power steering. If it did shut the engine down, you should file a NHTSA report. Sounds like a rare failure.

On AAA versus others...I have to say, AAA has been no benchmark of service from my experience. I'm in a somewhat rural area but there are plenty of local towing companies. Every time I've had to use them it has taken a long time to get a tow truck. I think they only make the contracts with the "big" towing companies which are often in the larger cities. Those of course are further away. But, I think you do get some priority if you are headed for a repair somewhere.

When you rent a car they do a walk around so you can confirm the condition in which you're now receiving the vehicle. Just sayin'......

 

Lexus does that too, even on my 2013 GX as a 3rd owner. Honda and Toyota don't.

I promised id have it checked for overcharging, as there is no draw... just haven't had the time to take it in

 

Sorry but the throttle body is still part of the intake. Just not the air filter box or inlet hose.

Never experienced on a newer modern vehicle. Never owned anything newer than like 2007 this is my first new truck. Engine went to 0RPM. She’d fire off but wouldn’t “start” or turn over. Anyone hear can replicate the exact same issue by doing what was in the YouTube video that was posted. I’m just surprised the more I thought about this how it won’t run unless everything is connected. I’ve always been able to run older vehicles we the intake disconnected from the throttle body but I guess that’s just newer technology. I’m assuming because if it’s disconnected right there the MAF doesn’t get a reading. But the weird part which I don’t understand is I figured even if it failed at the throttle body no check engine lights no stored codes, nothin. Also, for the sake of being technically correct I guess all in all yes it was a “intake” issue but dealer claimed throttle body butterfly valve. It’s weird I’ve ran this intake for about 4,000 miles. Maybe just due to change in weather conditions the cold made the rubber shrink on the coupling gave it enough play that the truck was thinking it as disconnected and displayed symptoms like in that guys video. For what it’s worth I ran the truck all weekend hauled stuff in the bed remote started etc 0 issues. All in all it’s been resolved.

 

I finally watched the video. OMFG. Unbelievable. Then I read the comments in the YooBoob video: everything that is wrong with society (comments mostly about Duuudes feelings).

 

Totally agree. This guy should have his Tundra take away. Might be better off in a Civic or a Prius.

 

If a slightly different set of circumstances we would say "somebody weld his toolbox shut right now."

 

He is a member here and is probably reading the comments. You guys are a bit harsh. you would be surprised how many capable people do not lift the hood when their vehicles crap out. Since COVID has reduced my work travel, I have been moonlighting at my nephew’s towing/roadside assistance company. It’s kinda fun but The majority of calls I go on are people who never attempted any type of self help, just get on the phone and call for help. I don’t mind as it’s $$
