    Alot of them
Good looking pup. Look at it this way. When people get pets and properly take care of them, you reduce the chances of that pet going to a home where they are not taken care of or possibly suffer unnecessary abuse. I was looking at getting a dog when I was younger and talking about pet stores. A coworker overheard the conversation. He looked at me and said "Go to a shelter and save a dogs life." I did just that and came home with an 8 month old chocolate lab and pointer mix. He was the best dog ever and my best friend for the following 13 years. His advise has stuck with me ever since.

I would say two dogs. I feel bad for leaving one dog by himself all day when we are at work.
I love animals in general, but not enough to keep cats, birds, rats, gerbils etc. as pets. Dogs are different though, everyone should have dogs!

Yup, we just have little Lucy, but sometimes wish we had gotten her sister as well so she would have a friend.

We love our one dog, and she's definitely a solo girl, but we'd probably get two if we could do it all over again.

My daughter has a hedgehog also, and I allowed it because Daddy can't say no, but I honestly can't see the reason to keep animals like this in cages.
Friends of ours have every possible version of rat, gerbil, ferret etc. in their house - all they do is feed them and clean the cages, and it always stinks. I don't get that.

My wife and I have four kids. Every since the older two boys (now adults) were little we have had two dogs. No cats due to allergies. Always females because my wife says they listen to instructions from more people better. I personally have never had a female listen to my instructions, but that's beside the point. Like others here have posted, our luck has been good with adding a dog when one already in our home is around 7 years old. Usually 6 months to a year after another has passed. Its like they teach them the ropes and the new additions seem to learn to be comfortable faster. We have always adopted rescue dogs somewhere between puppy and 1 year old and it really adds to the energy in the older dogs life. In 29 years of marriage:
1- Pepsi was a spaniel mix and lived to 16
2- Patches was a English Springer Spaniel and lived to 14 (she was my buddy)
3- Macy is a Pit Bull mix and just turned 13
4- Marla Pooch is a Collie mix and is now 5
Macy is aging fast and I don't know that we will replace her. She has just been such a good family dog it would be really hard to do. However I do have four Grand Dogs all under two year old. Three Huskies and an Irish Cream Retriever. Our older two sons live together so all four are in one house. That place is beyond CRAZY! But the howling contests are amazing. I am looking forward to helping out more with them at some point and hoping for some snow here in NC so we can hook those Huskies to a sled.20200725_Izzy.jpg 20200725_Kuzi.jpg 20200725_Ovi.jpg 20200725_Tyson.jpg 20201122_Macy.jpg 20201122_Marla.jpg

Thanks for a great thread! several good reads on here already.

Sorry for the long post, no work so far this week, and I'm bored.
We like dogs, don't hate cats but have no desire to have one.

Wife had a dog when I met her, I had none at the time.
My kids were in their teens at that time.
Our first date I showed up with a large box of Milkbones, no flowers for her, just dog treats.
I came to be known as the dogwalker to her neighbors while we dated.

    malloyaudabon1_8c7ec77af672770b8e0576f304b9461888512aa4.jpg

Anyway, we got married, a couple years later found Moxie at a Petsmart rescue event.
Seems having a dog for your dog works out well.
As others stated it keeps them both occupied and the older dog active.

No intention of getting another one, but this Schnauzer puppy followed us home on a dog walk.
He was too small to just tell him to go on..
He followed us home and laid on the front porch like he lived there.
Couldn't find anyone to claim him, so we kept him.

Despite never having her own puppies, Momma Moxie took over..

When Malloy passed wife said no more dogs, 2 is enough..

Then a couple years ago we saw a methhead selling pups in the Walmart parking lot.
She had 1 pup left and said he was the runt.

Wife and I immediately bonded with Maverick.
Best $75 we ever spent, getting him away from her..
This was actually the day that happened.
That is Ms Tweaker smoking her 5th cigarette in 10 minutes while my wife went to get cash.
It's weird that I held him for 20 minutes waiting for her to get back.
Maverick has favored me ever since, always wants to be around me..

Again Moxie took to her maternal ways and helped housebreak and kennel train Maverick.

    So again 3 happy dogs..

They have their own sandbox, Malloy is buried (cremated) behind it.
    It was his favorite place.
    IMG_1474_b4e486010532c29f4cc327855e7aa29ae174bbad.jpg

As well Malloy lives on forever, or at least as long as I'm able to drive..

I suppose the point of my rant is, we never really had a plan for pets other than dogs only.
Only rescue dogs at that, only paid cash to get Maverick to rescue him.
Although we have always felt if we have 3 dogs, only one would be female.

Wife says when Moxie passes, and she is getting up there, no more dogs.
But I think it just seems to be fate that decides what dog and how many..

My wife and I had a yellow male lab when we first got married. He lasted about three years until he ate a large plant, part of the wall and a vacuum cleaner part. Luckily he survived but found a new home shortly thereafter. This ruined us for 30 years about owning any pets until my son moved back in after college with a cat. Six months later after he moved out we would go visit him and the cat of course. Since then he married and now has two dogs. He tells me he now knows why I refused to get him a dog when he was growing up. His husky/boxer mix and Great Dane are driving him nuts! The week after he moved out we rescued Izabella (Calico) and Bleu. Bleu is a girl as well and considered the family princess. She is a rescue as well and came from a friends farm. Izzy is a fat load who gorges out during feeding time. She had to go on a diet because she could no longer bend down to lick her ass so that would be why I nicknamed her Sticky. She has since lost weight and is able keep up on her personal hygiene. Both are mellow cats except for Bleu. They are both trained to stay on the patio....except for Bleu, particularly when the neighbor lets their dogs out. She will make it a point to go over, jump their fence and beat up on their pups. Izzy is like “oh hell no” and immediately makes a run for the door. Don’t see any dogs in our near future, don’t care for the yard bombs and the cats are self sufficient, besides Bleu will beat the shit out of it!F1D78374-EDB8-4EA3-8589-2026655F88DC.jpg

I don t think logic plays a part for many. There s lots to consider. There s many in my apartment complex who own larger dogs; mostly pit bulls. Folks are gone most of the time, and leave the dog home cooked up inside all day. Seems there s always one dog barking, or whining. It s pathetic if you ask me.

So people who work and prefer to live in an apartment aren't allowed to like dogs?

Not what I meant, though I would say there is a difference between liking, and being responsible. I mentioned appartments because I live in one, and I see what some do here. Some folks have dogs, but pay practically no attention to them because they are gone all the time. They leave the dog at home. They whine and bark incesantly. I m no pita member, but it s not fair to the dog let alone other residents.

Whelp. I know I said no cats, but due to some extremely unfortunate circumstances a nice little lady cat found herself without an owner so we took her in. No regrets, she is so sweet. One of the nicest cats I've ever met.

The best thing we ever did, had a chocolate lab that we had for 14 years and now Khaleesi, Queen of All Dogs!
It’s amazing , they just want to be with you ALL the time , store , let me come, hike, let me come , reading a book, mind if I just lay here at your feet ?
I really feel that people who don’t have pets, our opinion is people who don’t have dogs, are plain ole just missing out....

Thank you to everyone who has posted. It's been fun to read through the though processes and how pets have won over those who initially resisted.
