Apparently our town has low water pressure so they issued a boil water notice. I say "Apparently" because our water pressure hasn't changed one bit. I'm trying to figure out if I need to replace all of our filters after this. The LG fridge filter and an under sink filter I have won't bother me too much but we also have a Enviro Pro-CS-1344 whole home filter. It's just the carbon tank, not the softener or the other tank.

I can't find anything anywhere on whether or not I should replace the carbon media after the notice is lifted. I see where I can order the expensive shit but I don't know what I should do. I'm trying to stay ahead of the curve here.

Anybody have any experience with the Enviro Pro-CS-1344 carbon filter and know if:
    1. I should replace it after the boil water notice
    2. If it's something I can do myself
    Thanks.

If you have the manual you should be able to change the carbon element yourself. Getting the element maybe a challenge. Its probably a good idea to change but I dont think its necessary. Again if you have the manual there is probably a sanitation procedure you can follow using bleach, that would do the same thing. Thats what they say with the system I have.

Thanks - I found a number for the company (the plumbers didn't leave us any literature for the system) and I talked to one of their people. He said just to run the tub for an hour after the boil water notice is lifted to flush the tank out because carbon doesn't harbor any of the nasty bacteria.

I may try to find some water testing kits just to doublecheck.

Boil water alerts are typically generated by a temporary lack of disinfection in the supply system, or a water main break that allows untreated water into the system. The 1344 is a whole house Carbon filter, and the carbon should be replaced ever 24 to 36 months. Before doing anything, I suggest that you contact Enviro to see what they have to say.

Thank you - I was able to contact them and they said the carbon in the 1344 is good for 1.2 million gallons or 5 years. He said some people have had it last for 6 or 7 years and to test the chlorine - that'll be the indicator that it needs to be replaced. I'm reading through your very informative thread right now. (I'm on page 2 of 8 - keep getting interrupted) Do you have any recommendations for an at home chlorine tester?

Thanks again for getting back to me.

    You are welcome.

Chlorine testing: pick up a bottle of OTO, and follow the instructions.

If you want to better protect the water you drink, consider a Multi Pure filter for the sink & fridge. The MP filter is a micron filter that is NSF certified to remove harmful chemicals and organisms that pass through a simple carbon filter. My Multi Pure distributor number is 114579

Doesn't sound like Environ addressed your question about changing due to pathogen contamination. Those recommendations are just covering normal maintenance. Chlorine testing is to determine if any chlorine is breaking through the charcoal. Eventually the chlorine just uses up the charcoal, and soon after, it destroys your softener media.

I'm not familiar with OTO, but it may be cheaper than what I'm using for chlorine testing. I test the effluent out of my septic tank for total chlorine every four months, and I test my charcoal filter outflow occasionally to monitor. I'm using a Hach test kit CN-66T, which is the cheap alternative for quantitative chlorine test kits. The test uses a color disc to define free or total chlorine up to 2.4 ppm. For testing the charcoal filter outflow, the test only needs to detect presence of chlorine.

    https://www.hach.com/total-chlorine...odel-cn-66t/product-accessories?id=7640219521

This is what I used to change my GAC (Granulated Activated Carbon) in my pre-filter. I don't know what you're seeing on pricing, but I found the OEM (Kinetico) valued their charcoal fill highly. This is the same product as OEM, and meets NSF standard. This is a 1 cubic foot bag, which is plenty for most pre-filters.

Thanks - I'll look at that. When I asked him about being in a boil water advisory and if I needed to change the carbon media, he said to just flush it out.

Then I told him we were near the 5 year mark with it and he said since I had the 1.2 million gal rated one, they recommend changing it every 5 years but he knew of customers that made it 6 or 7 before it needed to be changed. He brought up the chlorine as a way to test it to know if I needed to change it out. He also said it was definitely something I could do, I can order the carbon directly from them (but it's very heavy), and they have a video on how to do it. I've only seen the enviro carbon through a 3rd party and it looked like it was $500. I didn't ask him the price - figured I've had enough mini-strokes this week.

Sounds like the plumber was right on the charcoal filter. Water treatment sediment filters can accumulate a slime on them that may support pathogens, IDK. How big is your charcoal filter?

We only have the Carbon filter tank (#2) and it's pretty damn huge.

13 x 44 tank = about 1.5 cu. ft. of carbon, the picture indicates that it is filtering from the bottom up.

It's about 4ft tall and a foot in diameter. (Posted at the same time Rex did)

Your close enough. Just change it out. All carbon media supports bacterial growth. A downstream filter (typically a .2 micron) is the only way to remove bacteria.

A UV system installed after the carbon filter will also negate bacterial growth

I don't know if they left enough room to install one. The output is the short line.

Correct, will help control bacterial growth downstream of the UV by inactivation of bacteria (is not a fail safe though), but does not physically remove bacteria (alive or dead) from the water. Using UV also assumes low total dissolved solids.

@Rex Kramer Sorry to bother you again. I'm watching the video on replacing the carbon and it says you need to soak it and let it sit for 48 hours?! I'm gonna be mad because the installers didn't put any kind of bypass in and that means our house will be without water for 2 days.

    Is that normal?

The red handles open and close, just remember the tank holds pressure once the valves are closed... have some towels on hand as you break the seal.

You will normally get a flood of charcoal dust fines out of the filter when you first run water through. Maybe the 48 hours is to allow the fines to migrate to the surface for quick removal. As I recall, Kinetico recommended you flush the filter before connecting it into your system, but no soak period was required. If you have clean water, boil notice lifted and lines flushed, it doesn't take but a few minutes to get clean flow. Did the video tell you to disinfect the housing with bleach solution? Maybe not, if it's a maintenance video.

That's a big filter. My pre-filter is 7"D X 36"H, takes 0.4 cubic foot. Did the video specify any gravel in the filter? Once Kineticos get that big, they have gravel underbed that also has to be changed.

Carbon soak: It appears from the picture that the filter is up-flow, starting up a dry up-flow carbon filter would almost certainly clog the valve and cause several problems. Follow the manufacturers directions, or have a company service tech service it for you. All of the up-flow filters that I have encountered have been serviced by swapping out the old tank with a new tank that's delivered wet & ready to go, they are called exchange tanks.

I use down-flow filters that have electronic control valves that back wash, so starting up a dry filter is not much of a problem if done correctly.

Whatever you end up doing, this is probably a good time to install a proper bypass and a whole house shut off valve right there with the filter for next time.

Dump that over priced fridge filter and put one of these on your line in to the fridge. They outlast a bunch of fridge filters. I just left the one in my fridge but you could also cap it. I found this one at HD for the price of 1 GE fridge filter.
