Since age 5 or 6 my lifes been metal. :headbang: Usually wrenchin on cars or what ever needs to be done. Ive been a "handy" guy since I started learning from my grandpa as a child. Auto paint out of high school and later welding/ fabrication as short lived professional. But like I said, metal. Last year the wife and I made a bed from scratch and in the past I've made a hutch out of wood from window frames. And I'm at it again but rather than just nailing or screwing some boards together, we're looking to make a kitchen table. I have recently take an interested in joinery. I have no training in woodworking. It seems as like the woodworking shops have alot of high dollar equipment and I dont know that I have space in my garage for all the dust collectors and tables and all. I like having the feeling of not knowing what I'm doing yet.

I've been working on upping my woodworking skills also, most of my woodworking knowledge comes from youtube.

Seems like a table saw, thickness planer, and a palm sander are the must haves.

I have a post ww2 miller falls 14 inch jack plane that my grandpa left for me and its not been more than a decoration up until this point. I wanted to use it and so i cleaned and sharpened it and now it planes beautiful now. I was very suprised how good of a job it does.

A good table saw is a must. Without one long cuts (rips) are not easy to do accurately. I recommend craigslist for starting out. There are always people upgrading and selling the existing tools. I use my garage as my shop and for cars so all of my tools are on rollers. 90% of the time I work in the driveway.

Yeah, ill be working in the drive way too. I have a old cast iron craftsman table saw that a friend gave me when he upgraded to a cabinet style table saw. It wobbles a little on startup but it quickly straightens out and i use a crosscut slead with it. The fence doesnt stay put on its own so i clamp the ends most times.

Nothing wrong with that. Check out rockler.com for maybe upgrading your fence to make your life easier. Kreg jig also make a bunch of products that are really handy. If you find something you like on rockler shop around before buying from them. They are sometimes overpriced.

As many wood clamps as you’re budget (or wife) will allow.
    A Kreg Jig

Have gotten me by for just about everything. That said, if you want to add some spice to your edges nothing beats a router.

Check out knckoffwood for some easy designs.

I use a high tooth Diablo finishing blade for everything.

Also, I absolutely love the dewalt jobsite table saw with the rack and pinion fence. LOVE it. Cheapish, reliable, mobile. Wonderful saw if you’re making an investment. I wouldn’t use a table saw with “wobble” if that blade catches and you have a kickback you’re going to have bad day, a really really bad day.

Ive got a Bosch 1617evs coming in the mail. It seems like the bits on a router are a little inflated. Does anyone resharpen their bits or is it just a consumable? Do you pay 30 bucks for a bit and its only good for a number of cuts.

You sir need to spend some time in woodcraft. It’s the car equivalent of walking into the tool truck.

Marples are good starter chisels, I always get my blades re-sharpened, I use Forest or Leitz blades. A good quality biscuit jointer is a must, also invest on a planer if you don't already have one. As far as working stations you can build one and use heavy duty casters to roll into your driveway, try to incorporate your table saw into it, to save space. Woodworking is fun and rewarding at the same time. Enjoy it and be creative and be safe. :sawzall:

Grab a set, multiple sets if possible, you'll end up using them till you get a good set.

before you begin your kitchen table project, google "river table"; wicked awesome stuff.

i've been working with power tools and wood projects since i was old enough to pronounce the tool and explain to my old man what is was used for / demonstrate proper safety. i got caught playing with my old mans oxy acetylene torch in the garage when i was about 13-14; was gas welding using old metal coat hangers as "rod". after my mother scolded me and screamed "you're gonna burn down the damn garage", my old man gave me a high-five as she turned her back and left.

i just discovered the world of epoxy resin / hardeners / color pigments.

i want to build a river table w/ metal fab legs.

My brothers been boasting the coolness of the river table. I do like them they're beautiful. Im not sure the wife would say that goes with her country farmhouse thing shes going for. They are pretty cool.
Fun story you made me remember was about a decade ago I was in the workshop in a community college for welding, it was curriculum to take a cutting processes class (I probably learned the best habits in that class). I had this teacher that reminded me of ricky bobbys daddy( volunteer fireman). Anyway, we were oxy fuel welding and I was taking a break from the heat and I look over and the bank of welding booths down the way and I see flames. This is acetylene spewing from a regulator and before I could say anything the teacher slowly looks up and walks over to the tank and turns off the regulator. No one but me and him saw the flame and he just gave me a shitty grin. I miss welding somtimes...

Dad was into woodworking all his life; he's one of those guys who could magically wave his hands around a pile of wood and *poof* it's a hutch or dresser. LOL I didn't truly get it until (sadly) after he passed in 2019. That summer I was frustrated about something or other; and for some reason I started to work on some trim and a pantry. As I worked, I started to calm down; it was super therapeutic. I suddenly 'got it.' I'll never be at the level my father was, but now I actually enjoy and look forward to it; and feel a connection with my father more so than I have in the past.

Anyways....these are the last two things I 'built.' Dad and I collaborated on the bookshelves; I wanted two of them built to a specific size. (I believe they're about 3.5' wide and about 7' or so tall.) I did about half of the actual woodworking and all of the finish work. The pantry was actually my wife's idea. We had two small closets side by side in our hallway; why anyone built them like that was beyond me. Anyways, wife said "Is there any reason we can't knock down the wall and combine them into one large closet and turn it into a pantry?"

A buddy of mine did the knockdown and the finish/trim work; I did the flooring work and the shelving. Nothing special; wife wanted wire and I told her "Hell no; I want this to last forever AND look halfway decent." The vertical support and the shelves fit together and supported by L-brackets screwed into the vertical support and the undersides of the shelves in the middle.
