Man, I feel for you. That's one of the worse feelings is knowing there's something wrong and they can't tell you.

Out of curiosity, are you saying that after the initial vomiting a few days ago he is back to normal with eating and drinking? Or is it still an ongoing problem?

He only vomited once. No change with eating but the water intake increased before vomit and continued after vomit

I would like some thoughts on this. This is Codak my younger yellow lab. He came from a well respected kennel, and at about 6 month began "honking" like a cough only it is his breathing. He does not do it all of the time but it has been around most of his life. He right at 2 years now. He has been checked out by my vet as well as a specialist vet clinic. the specialist put him under and "scoped" him and did not see anything out of the ordinary. There has not been much feedback as to the reason or a resolution. There was a day during the hunting that I thought he was not going to make it. I did use an e-collar on vibrate and I have not specifically seen where this has an impact either way and I his collar is not tight around his neck. There were times during that hunting in the shorter grasses that I would leave it off, since I could maintain visibility and he would have the "honking". I walk him 3 to 5 miles a day and had not seen any issues for two months prior to this hunting trip and he has had few issues since. I have had some folks express they think he will grow out it. He does seem to have some level of control at times, on walks I have heard it start up and he will shake his head and look back down and it will seem to stop. Looking up seems to be common instigator for the issue as well. He is by and large quite a happy dog, seems to have no lingering issues, other than my worries. still picked up birds. Anyway would love some thoughts on this. Thanks in advance.

Did your vet do a complete CBC and Chemistry panel? The thyroid test and Cushings test are both specialized tests. My other thought would be pain from somewhere. Dogs with neck and back injuries become panicked and clingy and you may not notice the injury until you do range of motion tests. Dogs can have neck and back muscle strains, or they can rupture an intervertebral disc. I would get a thorough musculoskeletal and neurological exam. A CBC/Chem panel is also important. These panels will help rule out infection, anemia, liver problems, kidney problems. Keep me posted!

You said a specialist scoped him. Did they rule out laryngeal paralysis? Labs are prone to it, and it causes a distinct honking sound. We don't know why this happens. Laryngeal paralysis causes one side of the larynx (usually the left side) to become paralyzed. Dogs have arytenoid cartilages that close over the larynx and help protect the trachea. One of these cartilages doesn't open properly, which creates turbulence and causes the honking sound. There are surgical procedures that can help address this paralysis. Sometimes it isn't seen with an endoscopic exam because the dogs are under anesthesia, which relaxes the cartilages. Sometimes it can only be seen after the dog has been running around, which is difficult to diagnose because dogs won't sit still or tolerate an endoscopic exam without sedation or anesthesia. Chest xrays are also a good idea since it is a respiratory problem.

That was ruled out. While he was under they also gave him something to increase heart rate and his respiratory system to induce some panting. There was no sign of that. And yes he has been had x-rays as well. I have thought about taking him to Mississippi State to have their clinic look him over and see what they thought. Since the trip to South Dakota, he has not had any issues. I had thought for a minute that it was tied to the heat, since it started when he was about 6 months old and the summer heat took over, and had little to no issues prior to the trip in late October and felt even better when it was cold during the hunts. But I literally thought he was going to die. But it is tough to find the stop button on the labs, so I alternated him with my other dog. Since he had hip dysplasia, no he has an artificial hip, but he can't quite go all day either.
In my mind there are a couple of noticeable pieces to it. One is that he gets excited about something, and second when he lifts his head up. When it is bad, and the video was not the worst i have seen him by any stretch, but if he puts his head straight down like he is getting a drink he can get a good breath.
I am not sure what to think, and it had been an non-issue for several weeks prior to and has not been an issue since the hunting. But I was obviously concerned during the hunt, more than he was for sure.

I do thank you for taking the time, not just to hear about my pup but all of these pets. It is quite a good thing to you all are doing. So thank you.

I know about that stop button on labs. I have a 6 year old FS Yellow lab and an 8 month old M Chocolate pup. Neither came equipped with a stop button.
My only other thought would be to rule out collapsing trachea (though it's not common in larger dogs) but they probably checked that as well. It can sometimes collapse in certain positions and it causes a honking cough. It can be difficult to diagnose because you need to take chest films at the end of inhalation and exhalation, so timing is critical. Most collapses occur when the dog exhales.
Last thought would be sterile bronchitis. We don't really know why this happens in some dogs and you need to rule out infection first with a trans tracheal wash (TTW) or bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). A BAL would give you more information than a TTW because it samples the lower airways in the lungs. Using an endoscope, you flush saline into the lungs and then pull the saline out. This is your sample to test for infectious causes. If that's negative, then it's likely sterile bronchitis.
Keep me posted! MSU has a great veterinary school. That's where I would take him. Best of luck!

Great to hear he's doing well. Still a bit of a head scratcher. But, as long as he's improving, that's what matters. Let me know if you witness it again. See ya!

Hello everyone. We just got a mini-golden doodle puppy that is 8 weeks old. Parents are just shy of 20 lbs so this is a small breed. Looking for a recommendation for kibble. The breeder uses a commercial food that is not sold at stores so I cannot buy that brand. Thanks.

I usually recommend Iams puppy food, Purina One puppy or Purina Pro Plan puppy. Royal Canin also makes good maintenance diets. Pro Plan and Royal Canin can be found at PetSmart and Petco and are going to be more expensive than Purina One or Iams, which can be found at most grocery stores. All are good diets and should be fed based on the age and weight chart on the bag. All of them have the choice between small breed and large breed (I think). You may have to do a little research on that.

Honestly "the one" will pick you. Just spend a good while there playing with all of them, they'll make your mind up for you.

What are your plans with her as an adult? Will she be a retriever or just a pet?

Do your research on bloodlines and get conformation of no serious health problems. Golden Retrievers are great dogs, but they can have genetic problems from over breeding and other problems inherent to the breed. Hip dysplasia and hemangiosarcoma are the 2 serious health issues with the breed. And neither has outward signs as puppies. And, 1 of 3 will choose you. I have a 9 mo old Choc Lab male. Big goofball and he chose us. Also the largest in the litter and most laid back, which is important with Choc Labs, because they've all got a bit of a crazy gene. Hard to beat a really good Golden, though. Happy, happy, happy!

Hi again, I posted a while back looking for advice for my 10 month old pug, he has been doing really well and recovered from his derma mites (forgot the real word).

Recently, he wakes up at night scratching his ears. It has been about every night since around 2/1 and seems to be getting worse. I did a little amateur research and think its infected. His ears smell a bit funky and I can see some brown crud in one of them.

I have a bottle of vetoquinol ear cleaning solution and been putting drops in twice a day. One ear seemed to get better but the other doesn't show a difference. I want to take him to a vet but curious if I'm on the right track. I feel like whatever is in his ear is too much for these ear drops to be effective.

He doesn't like anybody touching his face so its hard to get a look, but I managed to get a picture while he was asleep. There are a few small scabs and bumps more near the outer ear, I belive from him scratching.

    Hey there
You are definitely on the right track. Take him to you vet and get an ear cytology done. They will swab both of his ears to get a sample, then they will determine the type of bacteria using a microscope. Certain types of bacteria can be resistant to the ear drops you are using. I would make an appointment sooner rather than later to minimize the damage to his ears from scratching and head shaking. Excessive shaking and ear scratching can cause an ear hematoma, which often requires surgical correction. Best of luck! Keep us posted!

I took Tuco to a new vet today, one that came highly recommended by my neighbor. They were awesome. They were patient with him and one of the techs spent a little time with him to build enough trust to let her flush out his ears. One of the key differences might be that this vet office is all women and the prior one had male vets. I notice when Tuco encounters women he is gentle and more trusting, with men he wants to play rough. He's a ladies man.

They did a swab for lab testing and gave me a bottle of Virbac Epiotic Advanced cleaner, Mometamax, and a jar of Trazodone to relax him for his next visits. They did a good job cleaning the buildup from his ears, they smell good again.

Thanks again @Kerch71 I think he should be clear in no time, and I'm happy that this lead me to a better vet. Now he's sleeping it off.

Hi, looking for advice on hip joint supplements the Veterinarians on here might suggest. I haven't asked mine yet. I like the unbiased opinion versus something they may sell in house.
My dog is a rottie mix of some sort but is only around 60 lbs. Seems a little more stiff and slow to get up than he did about a year ago just getting up outta bed. Thanks.

    Hey there
Here's the thing about oral joint supplements: They are not regulated by anyone because they are nutraceuticals. Many of them are very similar. Always look for one that has an "NASC" label. This ensures that the supplement actually contains what it says it contains. A good supplement should contain glucosamine and chondroitin. I prefer Cosaquin, but there are many others that are similar. You can get Cosaquin at Costco for a good price, you can order one online, or buy one from Petsmart or Petco. Just make sure it has the NASC label.

Thank you. Anything is helpful. He's got an appointment in a week, they are going to keep him for the day see how he moves etc. Then maybe do X-rays and something about looking for inflammation in joints.

Sounds like a good plan. Keep in mind that there are quite a few options to help with osteoarthritis. For short term treatment, you can use Carprofen, an anti-inflammatory (like Ibuprofen for people). Long term, I prefer Galliprant. It's better for chronic arthritis and doesn't affect the liver as much as Carprofen. Other options include laser therapy, which is very affective at reducing joint inflammation, and Adequan, which is an injectable joint supplement. The big issue with Adequan is the cost. You also have to initially give a loading dose over a 2 week period, which means a visit to the vet every 2 or 3 days for 5 injections. Then I would give a dose at 2 weeks after the 5th injection, then once a month for maintenance. I would often teach my clients how to give the injections so they wouldn't have to visit the vet so often.
I will divulge a little secret about Adequan - the Adequan for horses is 1/5th the price of dog Adequan. The only difference is horse Adequan has a different preservative than dog Adequan. This doesn't matter IMO. You can use horse Adequan in dogs, which I have done for many years without any issue. Horse Adequan comes in a large multi-dose vial (50 ml). If clients are comfortable giving injections, I would prescribe the horse Adequan. Talk to your vet if you're interested in pursuing this. The only issue now is that the FDA requires a reason for prescribing horse Adequan in dogs. I usually just say that the dog can't tolerate the preservative in dog Adequan.

Hello Tundras community and to the Dr.'s who are answering our pet questions. We have 14YO male chocolate lab that has developed a runny nose over the last 3 days. It is only out of his left nostril and has begun sneezing a lot. The discharge is mostly mucus but it does have some blood in it. He is eating, drinking and doing his outside duties. Any ideas what it could be?

Well, went to the vet today. He has hip dysplasia. Which dogs basically have since they are born from.what I understand it's just a genetic defect.
Anyways, Doc put him on meloxicam for a week then as needed and gabapentin. He said I'm very observant because I picked up on the "stiffness" as I put it. Now we are going to manage it. Brought up the adequan and he said it probably wouldn't do much good in this scenario. He also said we are in the moderate stage of hip dysplasia. I hope this is a good approach. This vet gave me 6 more months with zero bullshit with my other dog that passed 3 years ago 3/17. That is the only reason I'm even using him. That meant a ton to me.

    Hey
So, I'm not really sure why the vet said Adequan wouldn't help. It would likely help quite a bit imo. The other treatment to consider is joint injections. Boarded specialists do these on a routine basis, and some general practitioners will do them as well. It requires sedating the patient, then a combination of steroid and hyaluronic acid are injected directly into the hip joints. The goal is to repeat injections on a monthly basis. If the injection lasts < 1 month, then the injections are not repeated because they are not helping manage the pain and inflammation adequately.
Sorry to hear about the hip dysplasia. These cases can sometimes be difficult to manage. Let me know how it goes.

Anyone suggest or have any experience with Dasuquin? A friend's vet recommended not to him for his rottie/doberman mix. Looks like it's an ex/vet prescription type item

We used Glucosamine for years with our last dog, who passed away at 13.

She as born with Hip Dysplasia, was supposed to get arthritis early but never did, was supposed to run into hip/joint issues at 5-6, but never did. We gave her Glucosamine from when we found out, until her passing. We kept her active, weight sensitive and learned to adapt to her comfort level of walks/activity etc.

We were buying the Vet recommended powder form from them for years, until Amazon started carrying it for 1/4 the price.

    https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01N1G6LUI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There are a couple types of Glucosamine and from what we understood, and based on Vet purchased tubs, it should be Hydrochloride.
