That’s good looking out from a REAL HR PRO. I love that.

He ended up a great boss. 25 years later we don't work together anymore but are still friends.
He allowed me to do a lot of things (that he was supposed to do but didn't want to) that was above my experience level, but I had to quickly learn how to do it. With that came good pay increases also.

All young people entering the workforce should be taught this. I didn’t know it either a long time ago and also anything is negotiable...wage/salary, paid time off, bonus, benefits, etc. I switched companies a long time ago and while I got a good salary, I lost 3 weeks of vacation since I’d been at my old company for a while I’d accumulated a lot of vacation time. That sucked...

I hate to say this but I always come in low when offering a position to someone, people can interview well but after two months they fall apart. If the person comes back after I make an offer with a counter offer I will meet them in the middle and say after 90 days we will sit down and review your performance. ALWAYS, ALWAYS ask for what you want, salary, 401k vacation ect. the worst they could say is no and offer more than the original offer. Good luck man!!

I feel your pain. I just went through the exact senario this week. I had my job interview on tuesday and got an offer on wed afternoon. They tried to low ball me by offering me a paycit that sums up to almost 30% decrease than my current salary. They tried to persuade me to accept the offer and then went on and on for 1hr. They tried to justify the cut due to the fact that the job was a state job and not a private sector, hence, the low offer. The thing about salary negotiation, you have to know your worth and you have to be ready to walk out of the deal at any time. I wrote them a letter, declined the offer and stood firm on my asking minimum salary. I may not hear anything back from them again but I feel that I really didn’t lose anything anyway. If they don’t see my value now, they’ll never see it. Good luck on your negotiation. Hope you have a better luck than me.
