This topic really hits home with me. I grew up in the 90s, smack dab in the middle of the low fat craze (that, as a society, we STILL haven’t fully woken from). My parents divorced when I was 7, and my dad turned into a health nut while my mom went the opposite direction. Oddly enough, though, my diet wasn’t really much better when I was with my dad. He did feed me more veggies and *somewhat* less sugar, but he pumped me full of empty, completely useless carbs (pasta, bread, grains, etc). I grew up thinking corn was a vegetable. My dad fed me corn ALL the time. He also gave me a tall glass of orange juice every morning, and let me drink as much as I wanted. TERRIBLE. Juice has just as much sugar as soft drinks and koolaid, but it’s “good for you” bc it has vitamin C...:der:

But at least he tried. My mom fed me garbage. Cereal, pecan twirls, candy, soda, pizza, popcorn, chips, you name the junk food, she gave it to me (and herself). I loved it at the time, and of course it’s what I wanted, but GEEZ...:goingcrazy:

I turned out OK. But who knows how much better if I hadn’t been loaded up with sugar and empty carbs all the time. I was diagnosed with ADD at one point. But I probably just couldn’t focus due to being perpetually zonked out of my mind on sugar.

Every Friday was Hamburger Helper Rice Oriental. My Dad loved it and he thought everyone else did too. I always tried staying at a friends house to avoid this nasty tasting food. Also I remember going to visit his parents in Chicago when I was around 5 or 6. His parents owned a bar and when I saw the games they had in there, my eyes lit up. I wanted to play that shuffle board bowling game, you older members know what I'm talking about. So I asked to play and was told not until I eat my cup of MUSHROOM SOUP!!!:eek2:WTF, who makes a 5 year old eat mushroom soup. So I pinched my nose and downed it. Scored a 150, pretty happy with that:D

Grew up in TX, and I remember chili contests. You’d see all kinds of variations, mostly meat, onion, chili’s, and tomato- stewed, chopped, paste, etc… some had corn, chunks of peppers.

    Never beans.

At swim meets, we’d have chili over Fritos- “Frito Pie”.

My parents always did dinner, good stuff, but we’d have baby sitter or movie nights with TV dinners. I liked the novelty, but the processed food was crap. Also, macaroni with cut up hotdogs- crack for children.

Later, frozen burritos. But I don’t think those were too bad.

    Wish sandwiches.

A piece of bread with Mayo on it folded in half. You wished you had meat to put in it.

For the most part I enjoyed what my parents made and I wasn’t a picky eater. But two things they made occasionally made no sense and now that I’m not a kid (41) they stopped making it. Artichokes steamed or something and dip the leaves in butter like lobster. Wtf. And some white fish in the over with a slice of pepper and American cheese melted over it. Barf.

I used to make those because I enjoyed them. Mom used to complain I didn’t put anything in it.

Was that Brunswagger? We'd have that with Mayo on white bread.

No complaints here with whatever mom put in front of us but I remember the liver and onions with potatoes.... couldn't leave the table until you finished your shoe leather!!!

Sounds like it was overcooked. The liver my mom cooked was like clay, still bad. I hated liver until I after I got married. My wife knows how to cook it just right.

    Lots o’ mods
That is Euell Gibbons. He was famous for eating pine cones. He also did ads for Grape Nuts, which were not a far cry from pine cones. I was 15 before I knew that “breakfast cereal” was not synonymous with “Grape Nuts.” Fuck Grape Nuts and Euell Gibbons for 100,000 forevers.
