    Hey team,

what has changed in newer tundras that increased their tow capacity? Axel? Transmission? ....?

I roll a 2012 crewmax 4x4 5.7 and max is 7700#. Newer models of the “same” truck is more, what’s the word?

    thanks

2012 has 4.10 ratio and it changed to 4.30 in 2013 from what I've found.

Where are you getting your tow ratings?
    7700lbs is a crewmax 4.6L
Changes between your 2012 and newer trucks is your tow package was optional, comes with 4.30 gears and aux transmission cooler. Newer trucks with the 5.7 all come with the tow package ( and the 4.6 is no longer available )

2017+ or so ( can't remember exact model year ) toyota dropped the non-tow on the 5.7...aka all 10.5 rear ends have 4.30
2018+ regular cab dropped, along with the 4.0
    2019+ dropped aux transmission cooler
    2020+ dropped 4.6...

Where are you pulling your numbers from? I have a 2010 CM 4x4 5.7L w/Tow Pkg and its rated for 10,100. When Toyota adopted the SAE J2807, think it was 2013, it subsequently reduced the towing capacities, but not by much.

I believe the towing capacity is just the GCWR minus the curb weight. So if there's any significant difference from one year to another, it would be due to an increase in the capacity or a decrease in the weight.

Thanks y’all for pitching into the fight. Specifically I rock the 2012 crewmax 4x4 5.7 V8 TRD, tow pkg. everything I read the double cab long bed towing the big load (so to speak) but the crewmax drops to 7.7k. The “Toyota” website doesn’t have specs bc they only advertise the 20s and 21s so all I see is from other sites. Owens manual is the standard bull sh!t, “if available” “option” ...etc so for numbers it’s pretty worthless. Looks like the 4.1 vs 4.3 is the only difference. Tracking the SAE standards, someone posted Toyota went there in 2011...?
    Thanks again for info.
    Cheers

To me that means "They're actually all the same, go ahead and tow at the max rating of 9000lbs, likely 10k pounds."

Ford plays the same games to an even greater extent with the F150. I'm most interested in what the frame and suspension can handle. In my view the engine selection means little, I'd expect to be a little more sluggish with a 4.6L compared to a 5.7L. In Tundras the transmission is the same.

The frame is the same but all the other things are different, the 5.7 has a 10.5" rearend and much bigger driveshaft vs 9.5 for the 4.6, different transmission with diff gear ratio and end shaft to fit the bigger drive shaft, tow package comes with tranny cooler air to water ( not on 2019+ ) AND a water to water cooler, engine oil cooler, power steering cooler, tow/haul mode with different TCU programming, lower rear end 4.30 for the 5.7

I do not advocate towing above your tow rating, it is illegal and should something happen your insurance will deny your claim.
I dont even think you should tow above 80% of your tow rating, all this is a mute point though since you will run out of payload long before anything else.
If you are towing heavy, get a 3/4 ton or above. All the guys that say towing their 7000lb+ trailer is a breeze in a tundra probably have not towed the same trailer on a 3/4 ton. Plus you wont run out of payload,....
