I talk with Toyota Dealer about my switching valve code. Found out the entire AIP system is covered up to 10years 150,000 miles. They replace the air pumps, switching valves and some other misc. parts to prevent water intrusion under warranty. I have a 08 Tundra with 107,000miles.

I had a set replaced 2 years ago on my '07 DC. My understanding is that there are 2 sets. The Toyota dealer only replaced the bad one. I ask myself why they didn't replace both of them while the work was being done? Isn't that a better way of resolving the problem with the AIP?

What happened to me when the valve went out was the engine service light went on. The engine still ran with no noticeable problem.

I have a friend that also owns an '07 DC and he had both sides replaced before the Toyota notice came out. He was charged over $3000 by a local mechanic for the fix. Fortunately he was reimbursed by Toyota.

That is interesting they only replaced on of the switching valves. I looked on line and on the invoice...the dealer did replace both valves on my truck which makes more sense.

Before I found out it was covered, I removed the valves and only one showed signs of being a issue. I cleaned the valves up but still had problems.

The first time it was stuck open the truck went into limp mode, I cleared the codes a few times and it finally stuck closed. When stuck closed it will not be in limp mode.

Maybe a stupid question but what is an AIP system and what does it do?

No good question. From everything I read, when the engine is first started cold. The switching valves open sending warm exhaust gas and air from the air pumps to the first catalytic converters to help meet emissions faster.

A guy on the internet makes a buy pass kit, there is a You Tube video of the bypass. But if you can get it replace under warranty I would and did.

After doing some "bored" research, now I know why my brother's (FiddleString) '06 sounds like a hoover on cold startup. Apparently it's a common issue with the 4.7's... Guess I'll go ahead and sound the alarm.

I've also understood that it also occurs on the 5.7 engine.

Our 2008 just got this problem. 125k miles. Our regular mechanic estimated $500.00 for one valve as a starter. He tuned me in on the TSB and warranty extention. Taking the truck in to Toyota dealer tomorrow. The service manager _never said anything about 2 valves. Awfully glad I looked in here.

Toyota of Melbourne (Florida) says that the truck will be done tonight at 6. All recalls as well as air injector warranty. Not holding my breath tho.

I realize this is an old post, however, I am trying to learn more about the problem I have with computer fault codes P1445 & P1442, Secondary Air Injection. When I took my truck in they needed to keep it over night so that they could do a cold start up. After diagnosing they wanted to take intake manifold off to test components ($400) to look at valves, hope and air pump, couldn't afford to move forward. Wouldn't by-passing this ultimately damage your catalytic converter? I noticed after picking my truck up that the check engine was not on, but came on the next day after warming up. My son is willing to take off intake, my concern would on how to test related components. Any suggestions??

If it was me i would do a bypass on the air injection system... You can test the parts with a volt meter on ohms but you will have to apply power to it 12 volts or with a scan tool..you can test the motor see if it works( spins up) via 12 volts and the valve should be 12 volts also ( you should hear a click).. if either doesnt spins or clicks or likely you have your problem..

If you plan on digging in save yourself some time if your wanting to keep the truck now would be a good time to replace starter they both are in the valley together.. Remember you must replace in intake gaskets when it comes off dont reuse old ones..

    other side..

Only thing it really does it warm up the cats so you can get the ecm from open to closed state on fuel side ( running on 02 sensors) not the programmed curve in the ecm.... Even If the pumps where still running with the engine hot it wouldnt matter do to the exhaust of the engine hotter that anything else...

Hi everyone. Im a new member. Just researching this problem w the AIP on my 2012 2wd 5.7 DC, 55k miles.

I started the truck the other day and the 'service engine' and 'trac off' lights were illuminated. i backed up and immediately felt a hesitation or skip in the engine. I was in an emergency so i had to leave. I live on a long bumpy dirt road and when i finally got to pavement i realized she was in limp mode. I pulled over and check the gas cap. It was on tight. I restarted the truck multiple times and let it sit for a few minutes. Finally it Exited limp mode. I was on the way to the hospital, my baby was in an accident. What timing! While i was in the waiting room i discovered the AIP problem and eventually confirmed that the lsc includes my 2012. However, i am confused a bit. It appears the lsc is an ecm update. Everything im reading about the aip states its a $4k repair. So i guess if i just took it in for the lsc before i had the issue, that may have prevented an aip failure? But now that it has failed (possibly?), is this software update going to fix the already failed system? What do i need to do to ensure they replace it? I want the best repair. Not a patch. And i also understand that there are 2 of these systems. It seems to me the dealer wouldnt try to rip me, as they would be getting paid by Toyota, so whats it matter to them? Please advise how i should go about handling this to ensure i get the best solution. I worked really hard for this truck. Its the only/nicest new vehicle i have ever owned.

    Thx everyone....

    Welcome!

U can / should be able to still have the recall corrected. They'll give you an invoice showing its $0 charge (presuming you qualify for the recall) and that's how you know it was done.
My last tundra went limp mode on me, and I used the ultra gauge to clear it to get it to the dealer.

Yeah, but the way im reading it is the recall is just for the software update, which is a preventative measure, but not replacement of the pump. It looks like they will replace the pump if its Already failed. If i had the above symptoms is it likely that my system has "failed"? If so, do i need to push the dealer for replacement? The warning lights have since gone off and it has exited limp mode.

First thing is first make sure you have the updated firmware first for the ECM before pointing fingers at part failures.

IF the pump has failed they do make a bypass for it (aftermarket) never have to worry about the pumps failure again...

Toyota is aware of the pumps failure all the way back to 2005 or 2004 ( cant remember off the top of my head here) dealer knows this... ( i would claim the reason for failure in the pumps was do to bad firmware proving it would be tough too tough) but try it ;)..

With 55k you could still have some warranty on the truck so (hint hint) that should be covered under emissions i believe..

Ahh... thx! My dumba$$ thought my warranty was expired. What was i thinking?! 60m/60k For powertrain, and some emmisions items 96k. But they extended the aip to 10yr/150k anyway, the way i understand it.

This is exactly what im trying to figure out. I cant get a straight answer. Lets say im out of warranty and i get a check engine and trac off light. Is that a $3k repair out of warranty? If so, the how is a software update going to be sufficient in warranty? Thats all the lsc is, an update.

Have u called the dealer to confirm? They won't perform the work without your authorization to do so.

    x2...

if the dealer gives you the run around call the 800 number for toyota and see what they say first.

EDIT: if your out of warranty do the bypass.

Wow. That was super easy. I walked in and told the service writer about the lights and the limp mode and I wanted the pump replaced. He said "absolutely. You really know what u r talking about! And the software update is not all u need". He didnt even need to see the lights which have since gone out. Then he said I will order u a rental car sir. All of 10 minutes and no haggling....and they are replacing both pumps. He said it was a $4300 job. I found my new dealer. The other one I have been using would have taken 6 months and lost the parts twice!
