Last month I decided to make a big life change. My primary 4wheeling truck was a 2000 Tacoma extra cab. With seating for really only 2 a change was needed for my family of 4. I also used my Tacoma for house projects and hauling, if you have had a 1st gen, you know plywood/drywall doesn't sit flat in the bed.

I set my eyes on the 1st generation Tundra with 4doors. Similar in size to the 2nd gen Tacoma keeps is somewhat wheelable with the benefit of the v8.

I picked up this gem with a little over 100k miles. Recent service history made it look like a great deal. It has some issues, nothing too serious.

This truck, within a month and a half of purchase will be going to Rock Therapy (Tacoma World). Minimum mods will be needs for this trip: lift, tires, sliders, bedrack, communications, fridge and some other small items. A full build will progress after that trip.

The start of the build process, lift and tires. I found a good, almost unused set of 255/85r16 tires, Cooper ST Maxx. A skinny set of 33s that I love running on my Tacoma and 4runner. We will see how they feel on a Tundra. My initial thoughts, wish I got some skinny 35s.

For a lift I went with a Toytec Boss system. I went with the 3 leaf progressive in the rear over the block. I also added some SPC upper arms for better alignment angles (the added benefit of replacing loose upper joints)

I found out running a wheel spacer was needed for clearing the frame at full lock both directions, I happened to have a set and bolted them on while doing the lift.

Knowing the future will bring electrical loads greater then stock, some mods will be needed. I had some down time waiting on money to magically appear so I decided to do some battery terminal upgrades. Stock is, stock, good for the everyday user.

I like to run MIL spec lead battery terminals, they are rated around 600 amps. I have them in all my previous wheelers that had winches (a mod this one will get).

The Tundra ends allow for you to fit them to the new terminals with some light mods.

The terminals allow for a cleaner look when you get a could more wires hanging off there. I hope to not have too many (Vehicle wires, Winch, CB/communications, Switch-Pro).

I saved my Anti-Dark from my Tacoma before I sold it. Tundra would make a good new home for it.

Edit: Sorry for the bad photo cropping, I'm just stealing pics from my Tacoma world album

I have busy, buying the Tundra just before Moab last spring put me in a little time crunch so I didn't get some of the other pictures in. The last items before Moab was a set of rock sliders and a bed rack. I like to fab my own stuff but being a Toyota technician by trade I was offered a trade to build some differentials in trade for the bed rack and sliders.

Corey at Insain Fab is like 6'4" tall

The bed rack and sliders went on the last week before Moab and the Rim Rocker trail.

I had to add communications and constant 12v power for a fridge. I like using open fuse spots in the factory block for a factory look.

I hope to start fabbin' bumpers here really soon. A couple more house projects to finish up, including a lift in my new shop.

10' door so my lifted trucks shouldn't be an issue.

I picked up a new tent, some light assembly required.

I found the bolts too small for the tube size, so I needed longer bolts. I was not lucky enough to find a 60mm bolt with a 13mm head. Flat stock on tube wouldn't really hold that well anyways. I took two pieces of angle iron and my press and bent the flat stock.

Has to hang off the back for antenna clearance.

Picked up some body damage so the bumper will be high clearance style.

Good build so far! I'd love to find a first gen DC for an off-road vehicle.

LOVE it! I'm with him ^
I also love the first gens. Would love to get my hands on one someday for a fun build. Can't wait to see what else you do to it.

Sadly it has taken a back burner to the garage. I hope to pick up on the build here soon. I'm getting a mod pile built up. Switch-Pro, lights, Snorkle, steel, the sad thing is they are in a pile on the floor.

That's too bad but completely understandable. I will be here waiting to see what is next on that sweet truck. Thanks for inspiration.

Sorry, no more. I sold the big beast because it didn't fit my wheeling lifestyle. I went back to a 4th gen 4runner.

It should be illegal for good build threads to come to such an abrupt ending. I want a refund.
