I put this thread in 2nd generation forum cause I m not sure if 1st or 3rd gen is same mechinism. Reading a thread about dead battery, and inability to enter cab with key got me thinking about a way to open hood from outside, so today I performed minor surgury on the hood latch of my 07. It s fairly straignt forward. 4-10 mm bolts.
    Here are three of them

and the 4th bolt is here

Then the last fastener to remove is an odd looking nut. Only need to remove the one on the right which is fastened to the verticle brace. You first need use flat head screwdriver, and pry the plastic cap away to reveal the hex.

And this is the resulting nut removed

Once these fasteners are removed the plastic shield that surrounds the latch mechinism can be rotated clockwise so as to allow one to release mechinism from it s location. Do this by pushing stud that the nut was fastened to through it s hole, and work latch out of slot. It s then posible to see the cable end, and how this mechinism works.

My idea is to enlarge the length of the slot the cable anchor is attached to, and insert a second, similar type cable, (there s plenty of room for two cables in this location). In essence there would be two cables side by side. The normal one going to inside cab, an second one routed through plastic housing, and hanging down below; around bumper level, or where ever one wants to route it. The 90 degree turn of the new cable is accomodated by a very tiny pully fastened to the front clip somewhere. I can use tin snips to enlarge slot for cable, can go to a bicycle shop, and buy a cheap brake cable , and find a tiny pully in hardware store. This is easy peasy, and will be a nice mod if that time ever comes where you have to get hood open from the outside:thumbsup:
