Sounds to me like hydrogen fuel cells or diesel-hydrogen dual fuel is the way to go, at least for medium and heavy duty transport. Electric may work for passenger vehicles but I'm not sure it will be viable in 15 years.

They can pry my 5.7L from my dead cold hands.

(They won't do that... the commies will just force the price of gas to be sky high and make electricity 'free')

If this is the way the industry wants to go, they need to start moving on the electrical infrastructure immediately. Everyone will be charging their vehicles at the same time, which is not coincidentally during peak grid hours.

I’d love to see it. Seems to be an ambitious timeline. GM lives and dies by massive gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs. It’s hard for me to imagine an EV Suburban or an EV Sierra 3500HD. Think of the battery packs required for that. Think of the massive amount of fossil fuels it will take to produce and then power those vehicles. What Mr. Toyoda said makes more sense to me. GM’s statement seems fishy. Or political. Like they’re trying to angle for a market position or perception in the eye of the public they feel will be beneficial to their sales.

So much of GM being able to actually do this depends on external factors beyond their control like the power grid. Do they really think it’ll be ready for their entire lineup to be electric in less than 14 years? And do they think that the oil industry won’t put up a fight with its massive amount of resources?

DEFINITELY going to be wild to see how this plays out.

Market loves GM for making those all E plans. It might make me enough to afford to buy one, haha.

But seriously, it is a No Brainer, E is the way to go. Someday, we'll look back and laugh at ourselves for relying on those low torque, noisy, greasy, smelly, smogster mobiles we used to drive!

    The future is beautiful.

And I’ll be at the last gas station in town, pumping $20/gal into my barely broken-in Tundra, while people in EV Camaros throw their smoothies at me. Ahhh, the future!!

I'm in the oil & gas industry. I sell underground tanks and fueling systems for gas stations.
Our company has had record gains every year in the past 5 years.
Everytime a get a call from a customer asking for pricing on new underground tanks, I can't help but think of all these electric car and suv vehicles coming.
Strange thing is, we sell fueling systems with typically 6 dispensers (two sided) and at the most 2 electric fast chargers. 2 cars at a time.
I think oil and gas will be here for a long time. who wants to wait 20- 30 minutes for 100 mile range? You can fill up in 5 minutes with gas and get 400 mile range. (350 for a Tundra)
Thankfully I will be out of this business in 7-10 years. I've been in it for 30.

Battery technology will have some next gen solution that we haven’t seen yet. Today there isn’t the resources to get everyone on E vehicles. But thats with our current understanding. Just like when tesla started, batteries had to evolve. Power generation is going to need to make massive improvements too. We do not have the power grid for it today, hopefully in the future we will.

Maybe the way this will play out is that GM’s lineup will be All Electric™, but that will be marketing speak for some kind of hybrid that isn’t actually fully EV.

Kinda like Taco Bell’s taco meat that’s only 33% meat or our kids’ “hoverboards” that don’t actually hover at all.

Back To The Future 2 sure got that last one wrong!

Don’t forget about the boat industry as well. The largest boat and engine manufacturer, Brunswick’s Mercruiser lime of inboard and inboard/outboard line uses GM engines.

Pretty sure the bulk of the charging will be in off peak hours generally overnight. In many places rates are actually lowered at that time. I’m sure that will change with the opportunity to gouge the customer.

this is not to take away from your comment which I agree with in spirit as the electrical grid is not ready for electric car mass adoption and they don’t seem to have a plan to make it ready.

Loooooong way to go and it ain’t happening in 15 years.

    https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a35152087/tesla-model-3-charging-costs-per-mile/

Plus batteries take a shit ton of oil to make and are essentially hazardous waste at EOL. Wind turbines and solar panels are often more harmful to the environment when compared to the electricity they generate, so unless we’re going all in on nuclear I don’t see EV being sustainable. Most of the industry is propped up by government subsidies... pull those and see how long the market lasts...

The first law of thermodynamics prevails in this case. You gotta get the electricity from somewhere...and hopefully from a source with less of a carbon footprint than gasoline/diesel.

It just earns them some love on their side from the folks that think the world can run on sunshine, rainbows, and bunny farts. It's also far enough out that it can be pushed off of re-figured over the span of 4, 8, and/or 12 years.

Why? Aren't all of us supposed to be dead due to climate change before then, and where will the electricity used to charge these fantasy vehicles come from?
Hydrogen power is the future, not the electric vehicles China is pushing on the world.

All I think of is that movie IRobot with Will Smith where he says I told you so and breaks out his gas powered motorcycle.

I’m sure all of China and India and Europe will be electric too. Oh wait.

I was in grade school in the '90s and they were saying by 2010 we'd have autonomous and flying cars. Prior to that my parents were told that by the '90s we would be in an ice age. It's all BS to push whatever agenda is in vogue at the time.

Electrification is going to happen, and maybe something else like hydrogen etc. There is nothing we can do about that.
But, people stare them blind against that and think " Oh no!, in 10 years everything will be electric". Fact is that there will still be gas or diesel vehicles being produced for some time alongside the electric, and then after that those gas vehicles will have a 20 or 30 year life span (Toyotas even longer of course), so I don't think any of us will experience an all-electric automobile world in our life time. Maybe our kids or grand kids.

Yeah I did a middle school report back in the mid 70s. In the report I cited several news and industry articles about flying cars and in as little as 15 years we'd be in flying cars. These grand predictions are always 20 years out like folks forget what happened 20 years ago.
