The single biggest disappointment for my 21 platinum was the quality of the "JBL" upgraded system. The second biggest annoyance was backup camera quality and lack of other cameras, especially considering their other cars have multi camera setups.

Ordered from James at tech12volt. He was very helpful and responsive.
    20210122_112808.jpg

Sub install was probably the easiest of everything. Maybe took an hour total.

Rear view of factory camera - Its an absolute shame that I can't remove factory guideline as the kenwood are adjustable and track with steering. I will be looking into replacing this camera with a better quality one. Though the image did get better with a better HU.20210125_121246.jpg

Sub level control location. I like this area since its so handy to adjust bass on the fly. Disregard the rear window button, I just placed an order with CNDesigns for his three button holder there. 20210125_120856.jpg
Amp install was decently easy. Ran power down passenger side, and all the RCAs under center console
    20210125_120813.jpg

Front camera mounting location. Was SUPER simple. I just ran the wiring with my amp install and grabbed power from back of radio while installing that. I just bent the mounting tab to match the honeycomb and put some super strong double sided tape on. 20210125_121207.jpg

All in all, the biggest PITA for everything was getting the MASS of wires behind the radio positioned well to put the radio back in. The sound is MUCH better, and the Kenwood's screen is really nice. Having a front facing camera is really helpful, and I love that it comes on automatically when driving very slowly. I will definitely take the time to run two more camera to each mirror. The wireless Androi Auto is really nice, but can't seem to get it to connect automatically. It's not a big deal to hit the button each time, but it be much better if it would just connect (though I may have something set up incorrectly here, looking into it.)

How long did moving the rear window switch take? I've been thinking of moving mine and I'm starting to run out of other mods to keep me busy...

I bet that sounds soooo much better. You must have swapped out your shifter surround to the non-leather version correct?

I ran the extension while I had everything open and running the other wires, so it was a no brainer to do it at the same time. If i were only doing that, I'd say it would have taken me about an hour to do. Was very simple overall and I like the location a whole lot more. CNdesigns just opened back up for orders so my switch plate is still being made. I'll have to open center console again and modify that once I get the plate. With the extension, I ordered the 42" cord. And I ended up having to cut the factory harness out of the tape so I could get a few more inches. 42" would have been possible, but it would have been tight, 48" would be perfect.

It really does! The factory system was just really lackluster. I did change the shifter surround to the non-platinum one with the card holder. I think it could have been done in the leather version, but wanted the ability to return truck back to factory conditions if ever needed.

Are you still able to adjust all the factory menu items that you control though the factory head unit?

I think there was one small item that I can't adjust, but can't remember. Whatever it was, I remember it being really insignificant and something that didn't bother me at all. Otherwise, I still have all factory settings

I just had the JVC version installed and I'm thinking of adding front and side cameras. Definitely keep us posted if add anymore.

The front camera is worth every single penny! I'll get to the side cameras eventually, but that's a chunk of work and I'm pretty happy with things as they are now.

I too have the 1037 with front rear and side cameras. Right now it is giving me a lot of problems with the side cameras. When at slower speeds the front camera comes on and it is great to see what is in front of me as it is on an 8” lift. Somehow that messes with the side cameras and they won’t activate with the turn signals, but if I hit the camera button they display. I called KENWOOD they said to turn off the rear camera. It still doesn’t work and now I am frustrated as they have worked before with the other system I had before. Not sure what to do now. I have disabled the camera (front and rear) but the front one still comes on, and when I put it in reverse the camera doesn’t come on, and I have to manually select camera then rear for it to display. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions, maybe someone else ran into the same problems.

Hey guys, new owner of 2010 Tundra and first post.

I just had a shop install a Kenwood 1037S with front, rear, side cameras and Maestro RR2.

The side cameras activate when using the turn signal but once the turn signal is switched off, it then shows the rear camera for a second with a black image. The rear camera works fine when in reverse. Also, when selecting the rear camera button on the Kenwood unit it shows a black image, and there are no buttons to select the side cameras. The shop told me this is the only way to get the cameras to work while using the turn signal.

Based on the previous post from Bsouth808, I'm thinking this might be true and not sure if it helps your issue but I'm still not 100% satisfied with my setup as the black image is a little annoying after completing a turn.

I'm curious if others have any experience with side camera setup and the Kenwood unit?

    Thanks.

Just to provide another update. I asked my shop to deactivate the turn signal side cameras. Like I mentioned previously, with that activated there is a slight pause with a black screen after the turn is completed which I found really annoying.

Now I just have the rear camera activated when going in reverse and the other cameras activated manually.

I had a slight problem with mine as well. Screen is dark for just a millisecond on mine. When mine weren’t working, they found out it was in the OEM setup under Maestro settings, and they worked perfectly for me

that is a nice looking screen! How does it hold up under sunlight? I can never really see the back up camera on the OEM screen when the sun hits it

The screen is beautiful and I've had no issues with glare or seeing the backup camera.

They describe the following features on their website which explains why there is no glare:
    https://www.kenwood.com/usa/car/navigation_multimedia/dmx1037s/

"Optical Clear Adhesive (OCA) is added between the touch screen and the LCD to eliminate the air layer and suppress light reflection and glare. This feature enhances the contrast and brightness and maintains the visibility of the display in various environments.

The AAS display technology of the LCD panel assures you a wider viewing angle of 170° for both horizontal and vertical directions. Together with the protective film which minimizes reflection and glare from sunlight, you can enjoy clear images even from the passenger or back seats."

I just bought the Kenwood DNR1007, and I'm waiting on delivery of my TRD PRO to install. Did you take the back camera assembly apart yet? If so, will it fit the average HD cam? I was hoping to replace that potato like camera in the tailgate with the Kenwood camera, but I'm worried about the fit.

Also, don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but you can get rid of the Toyota lines by cutting a specific wire. Can't remember what wire it was though.

    Looks great, nice install!

That was my concern when I was setting my system up. I have the 360 cam on my 2020 AT4, and the side cameras never came in that useful. If you're someone that goes trail riding every day, I'd say it might be worth it, but the environmental stresses on 'retrofitted' side cams seems like a pretty huge gamble.

    20210816_220353.jpg

If you look close, you see how they recessed and made sure to guard the camera. Any retrofit will be an electrical gremlin just waiting to happen, especially if you use cheap Amazon/Ebay cams.

    Just my 2 cents.

How has the head unit performed over time? Any serious glitches? I’m trying to narrow down my choice of replacement HU, and have come down to Kenwood, Pioneer, and Alpine.

Would you buy the same HU again?

    Thx!

VERY WELL. Only thing that seems weird is every few weeks the head unit will just up and reset. I believe this is a problem with the software as I saw a few other posts mentioning the same problem. But could totally be my amateur installation. Otherwise I LOVE the head unit and I would absolutely buy it again. I was really back and forth between this one and the pioneer myself, and I think the camera abilities were what pushed me to the kenwood.

I have not gotten into the rear cam yet, but I'm pretty happy with it still. Would love to know which wire to cut if you ever find that out though! Im not sure that an HD cam will do any good unfortunately since the signal comes in on a composite RCA wire which can only handle a max of 480p. Would be nice if it could take an HDMI or something.

Just an updated review for 10 months and 25k miles. I still love the sound system and stereo. I pretty much don't use the wireless android auto at all. The screen sits just a little too low and to the right and when I turn my head to look at the screen, my eyes come off the road just a bit too much. I have my phone mounted in the perfect spot and frankly I just use that only. The bluetooth connects perfectly for the music so I'm happy. It would be nicer I think if the screen could be angled some, and I've though about making a custom mount for it so I can do that myself, but my commitment to that hasn't surpassed my laziness. For the same reason, I haven't added the side cameras yet either.

Mine turned out great, had them rewire it. The rear pic looks a but washed out because of light and humidity, but most that's with any cam.

Yes, but they need to have the Maestro interface with it. The ONLY factory feature I lost was the turn-by-turn navigation instructions on the little screen by the speedometer. Which I didn't care about at all. I actually gained a few features as well. The stereo connects into the OBD2 connection and I can get all the engine readouts now in realtime, can see tire pressures on screen, etc.
